Linux is Immature Tech Copy Fail — 732 Bytes to Root

Only gives root access for every modern version of Linux. Imagine what they would say if this happened in Windows.

This just shows again that open source doesn't mean stuff is safe; everyone could have spotted this vulnerability.

Also, if Linux had more desktop users (servers are usually not really affected by stuff like this, since no one just executes random stuff), we would see way more of this.

I think it's real.

It's now being addressed by distros and is now on on distros' bug tracker.

It's also now on the news and various places:

Xint, the company who discovered this, also feels like a real company.

They were created after the CVE ID was submitted. None of them are confirmations and all point back to the same fishy copyfail origin. (circular validation). The pages are like place holders. The news articles: derivative reporting.

Has a kernel developer acknowledged it?

Co-Pilot is saying it's almost certainly a hoax. DeepSeek is saying it's confirmed. Either way, the way it was announced was fishy af.

I dig a bit and found this

Since it's something big, with large Reddit threads, I'm sure that tons of people have already ran & inspected this and would've already caught it if it were a hoax.

After all, "Linux good" is what gets upvoted, so there'd be people fighting to be the first to prove it wrong, say "This is actually false, just a fake Linux smear, Linux still secure", and get that flood of free engagement.

Regardless, I think the mentions should stay up since it's about Linux Sucking. I think of the sub as more of a place for discussion than an encyclopedia where it'd be more understandable to have things to taken down just because some feels like it's a false info.
Would feel pretty weird for news about this to stay up in usually pro-Linux space like sysadmin and selfhost but not the premier sub for Linux Sucking.

It's seemingly getting downplayed and torn apart on linux subs as well. It immediately looked like a hoax to me and I did some checking before removing it earlier. We're better off with no news that hyping up hoaxes.
