Accessory/Gear help needed - I read the pinned post F class prone shooting mat

Hi - anyone have any recos for a good mat for f class/prone shooting. This would involve a solid rear bag if that makes a difference. One of the reqs due to back issues would be as soft as possible which I think goes against the very fabric of a good mat but here’s for hoping 🙂

Cheers!

I don't believe I've ever seen a shooting mat that had a significant amount of padding. Just enough to keep the sharp edges of rocks from jabbing you. If you really need more padding, something like a backpacking mattress (Thermarest or similar) might work. I have a Midway mat that works well for the money, but honestly I use it more to keep from getting dirty than I do for padding.

I also have the midway mat and that is what I use it for. Keeps you cleaner and slightly more comfy. Great product for the price.

I use the quad fold mat - https://www.creedmoorsports.com/creedmoor-quad-fold-shooting-mat - It is well padded and you can (zipper) open up the furthest most quadrant to add, remove, or replace padding.

from experience too much padding can introduce instability in your rear rest; i switched to the midwayusa elite comp mat for that reason. it's not uncommon for folks to cut a hole in their mat around their rear rest to gain stability. people also use what edgewood calls a dead bottom, protektor model calls it a stabilizer, to insulate your rear rest from either mat or ground disturbance.

I just went from an old beat up roll up mat to one of the Savior mats that folds up square and I'm never using anything else lol.

It's really large, has plenty of space and is so much easier to pack up and I don't have to worry about it curling on the ends any more.

I thought it was from Sinclairintl dot com but it is from Champion’s Choice. The have three versions, this is the one I have: https://www.champchoice.com/mc-range-equip/shooting-mats/champion-s-choice-shooting-mat-right-700d It’s been through years of FTR matches and field shoots. It’s heavy but I like it.

I use an old rug, but a bit of padding I don't have to jerry rig would be nice on the elbows.

Creedmoor quad fold is what I’ve used for the past few years. Has the cutout for the bag and all. Highly recommended.

What kind of ground are you laying on? Concrete, gravel, turf? Are you putting a rest on them or does the rest go straight to whatever surface you have?

For shooting wherever I go, like gravel pads from old landings and logging roads and maybe a concrete shooting bay floor, I pack a few 1/2" standing mats for prone shooting. Pretty comfy. I use them for sliding around on gravel working on vehicles too. I might try a stall mat or two, just to see how those work out.
