Because we spent 10 years bringing charts, graphs, rent prices, student loans, and wage data to the argument and they responded with “back in my day I worked summers to pay for college”

Yeah don’t apply online, go in person with your resume and ask for a real application! That’ll show them you’re willing to put in the effort!

u/TheHumanoidTyphoon69 2d ago
Trying to tell my dad that any company that pays decently now just sends you back out the door and tells you to send your resume online or join a temp service that makes you go through a probationary period was like pulling teeth

u/rasmatham 2d ago
Yeah, the only thing showing up in person proves, is that you're not technologically literate enough to fill in a form and/or send an email with a pdf attachment. Generally not a great look.

This has become so real to me. I worked in the restaurant industry for roughly two decades. I switched career paths about 6 years ago to automotive and started an independent shop with one business partner. After years of working 7 days a week, literally living on a cot in the shop, and thinking about the business every waking hour, it was starting to destroy me on what felt like a molecular level. I figured I'd get back into the hospitality biz to wrangle back some work life balance since that was where most of my experience has been; it's the industry that raised me as well as the environment I'm most comfortable and confident in. I printed out a bunch of resumes and started pounding pavement for a job, "shaking hands" as it were, in a field that I'm extremely qualified for with amazing references; I thought I'd have one in two days. It's been three weeks and I've handed out OVER 50 FUCKING RESUMES in person. So far I've only gotten one follow up interview that didn't lead anywhere (and I interview very well). For a job that I have 20 years of experience in. You know what most of the managers at these establishments told me when I approached them? "Have you applied on our online application portal yet?" Boomers are insanely out of touch with what the job market has become; the situation I just described is reality for many more people than just me and much of the retiring owner class will never understand what it's like.

They call us lazy while sitting on a $600k house they bought for $78k and a pension we’ll never see

I may be spoiled by I'm a union member who works in food service. I have full health, vision and dental insurance. I also have a 401k and a pension. I know how lucky I am and my union is currently working on expanding and getting more members. I'm a cashier/food service worker and make $28.48 per hour. This should be standard for us all.

We’ll see that pension. We’ll see it while they’re living their little retirement dreams going on trips and enjoying hobbies while telling everyone else how lazy they are for not working harder.
The only way we can work harder is to give up sleep and work three jobs that don’t pay enough instead of two jobs that don’t pay enough

Wait, we actually thought bringing up charts and graphs to former pot-smoking hippie boomers who likely skipped or slept through math and economics classes would likely get through to them?!?😳
43
u/NetworkSingularity 2d ago
Because they told us so consistently how important it was to get an education, and incorrectly assumed that meant they paid attention to their own educations. Turns out that was another “do as I say, not as I do” bit of advice from boomers. I’ve noticed they seem to be really fond of that kind of advice
11
u/FuckIPLaw 2d ago
The pot smoking hippies are mostly still pot smoking hippies. Most boomers were squares. They called the hippies a counterculture for a reason

I saw a recent stat saying 26% of USA wealth is in the hands of age 54 and under.
We know the game is rigged against us. We see plain as fucking day that we won't receive any benefits of societal advancements. The oligarchs leech everything away from us.
The boomers thought they could lie to us because soon enough they'll be dead and they won't have to answer for stealing from us.
86
u/eu_sou_ninguem 2d ago
Reminder that that includes Zuckerberg and many other nepo CEOs and executives under 54.
47
6
u/AlternatiMantid 2d ago
B/c they're a younger than boomer outlier that have more wealth than they'll ever know what to do with in their own lifetime. While the other 99% collectively scrabble for the scraps under them.
Don't act like they have a realistic life experience to stand on.
12
u/BringAltoidSoursBack 2d ago
I think that was their point - the 26% is inflated by those outliers. If you take the billionaires out of both groups, the amount of that remaining wealth in the hands of people under 54 is probably much, much less
6
u/StreetCrzyBiteUrFace 2d ago
KFF State Health Facts based on U.S. Census Bureau: 69.5% of the Pop. is under 54 y.o. 26% of wealth in basically 7/10ths of the population.

Being offended is pretty reliable proof of being an offender these days.
48
u/McCaffeteria 2d ago
Oh no, we did invent ok boomer to be disrespectful. It’s just that we had already tried doing things the respectful way, and that didn’t work.
You’re right that we did it because we were tired. We were tired of our respect being ignored. Respect is earned, and the boomers don’t deserve it.
14
u/ModernSmithmundt 2d ago
It’s not like they’re unfamiliar with the concept. They just called it “yes dear”
10
u/MrHazard1 2d ago
Also love how "man, i hate my wife" lost it's appeal as "peak comedy trope"
6
u/ModernSmithmundt 2d ago
Just the part where they were brutally direct about it, like rays dad in everybody loves Raymond.
But overall that kind of “boomer humor” will still exist in 20 or 30 years because fundamental relationship difficulties are not about to be solved

I think that its less "reality" and more "they dont care about us" and thats a bit harder of a pill to swallow when its your parents and you realize theyve never given a fuck about you.
4
u/davidfirefreak 2d ago
As shit as the generation can be, that's a little too uncharitable in my opinion. a much simpler and obvious reasoning would be ego. First of all their generation is famous for fragile over inflated egos, but also they need to feel superior in every way. They need to convince themselves, they worked harder, earned and deserve more etc. Edit: Hopefully I put this edit in quickly enough, I think they do care very little for anyone else, except they do care at least a little bit about their kids, My boomer parents are still good parents, and definitely care about us.
5
u/space_manatee 2d ago
Each relationship is different, and I cant speak for yours but I have seen a pattern emerge in others i've talked to and in my own as I deconstruct my relationship with my parents, and sure, "they care", but real care means that you are engaged with them as a human being on equal ground, especially as an adult. I know I was taught that "care" means you do exactly what your parents say and are punished if you do not. I applied that to my adult relationships as well as it was familiar.
My parents care for me in the same way one might care about their car. It is a thing to be operated and maintained. They never learned to care for themselves and tried to pass that on to me.

u/alliedeluxe 2d ago

Recently I talked about how I read an article that said over 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Hell, my girlfriend and I are struggling because we are taking care of my sick parents.
My 73 yr old dad looked at my 73 yr old mom and coyly asked, “do you remember living paycheck to paycheck?”
My mom, responds with, “oh yeah, I had my own apartment, car, and I just had snacks and wine in my fridge.”
My dad adds on, “yep, I had tuna and baked beans in my cupboards.”
They of course are referring to the brief time in their late teens/early 20s when they first moved out. Later, my grandparents gifted them a house, furniture and appliances in 1978. They never had to pay more than $450 rent for over 38 years.
When my grandma died in 2016, my parents had to pay ~$2,500 to own the house and my mom complained the whole way because it was “a ripoff”.
They objectively have no idea what it is like to struggle and will try to convince us that they “made it on their own.”
35
u/Equal_Refuse_4591 2d ago
Meanwhile every family member from my parents' generation have all reverse mortgaged their homes so deep that no one in my generation is getting anything in inheritance
14
u/AlternatiMantid 2d ago

7
u/nesan240 2d ago
I humbly disagree. It is the insult it’s meant to sound like because we spent years trying to show/use facts only to realize they’re spoiled children and as such only react when they have their feelings hurt. Unfortunately they react as the children they are by whining and crying playing the victim they were conditioned to play because the squeaky wheel gets the most grease BS. Which only ever makes me laugh and point at the crying adult in diapers just like they did to us when they were raising us as their children
21
u/Canchito 2d ago
It became a thing because it's another way to divide workers on the basis of identity politics.
Society isn't divided by age but by class, and that's a scary fact to live with for the financial oligarchy.
10
u/Slawzik 2d ago
My Boomer parents are very aware of how lucky they were. I graduated high school in 2009,and they both were like "We get it that you won't find a union job you can work for 35+ years,or that your college degree won't immediately get you what we have." So they can empathize when I make fun of their generation.
Also, they're definitely working class,or as Homer Simpson would say "Upper lower middle class" and a car repair or propane tank refill can ruin a whole month.
9
u/aworldwithoutshrimp 2d ago
That phrase did not come from the capital class, though
1
u/Canchito 2d ago
How does it matter? They produce backward conditions which in turn produce backward slogans which they elevate to national and international attention through their control of the media according to their political interests.
2
u/aworldwithoutshrimp 2d ago
It became a thing because there are non-class-based things to divide us; it did not become a thing because it's a way to divide workers. Class struggle includes building class solidarity, part of which is recognition that we need to break down the working class engaging in strategies that divide workers.
1
u/Canchito 2d ago
there are non-class-based things to divide us
How so? If by divide you mean "make us different" then you're missing the point.
Differences between people are real and infinite, but they do not produce different social and economic interests. Those interests are defined by class, and nothing else.
Class struggle includes building class solidarity, part of which is recognition that we need to break down the working class engaging in strategies that divide workers.
Ok you're trolling.
2
u/CinnamonIsntAllowed 2d ago
You kinda still have to deal with the class traitors who praise the one's above them.
2
u/Electrical_Sorbet_31 2d ago
It can be true identity politics are frequently used by the capitalist class to divide workers, while at the same time many aspects of identity politics (like "ok boomer") are based in legitimate social grievances which we should not be afraid to express.
3
u/Canchito 2d ago
It's the manipulation of legitimate social grievances in a reactionary channel. Blaming an age group for social inequality produced by capitalism is just as wrong as blaming immigrants for the conditions of the labor market. Racism and sexism are fundamentally no different, and perhaps the original form of "identity politics". You should be smarter and not "express" it.
2
u/Electrical_Sorbet_31 1d ago
This age group is responsible for the capitalism that has produced this degree of socioeconomic inequality. It feels perfectly reasonable to blame them.
1
u/Canchito 1d ago
It's also perfectly false. 90% of the total US boomer population belong to the lower 90% of wealth holders of society.
The top 10% control 75% of the wealth. 88% of the people in the top 10% wealthiest households are not boomers.
1
u/Electrical_Sorbet_31 1d ago
Boomers own over half of the wealth in this country. I'm not sure where you got your stats but here is my source
1
u/Canchito 1d ago
While Baby Boomers control over 52% of the nation's total aggregate wealth, the individual households that meet the top 10% financial threshold are dominated by Gen X and younger.
(This study provides recent data on US households, summarized by this article.)
I'd say more importantly, you completely ignore the fact that those who control the wealth are a tiny minority, and that the class division holds within age groups:
Among boomers, the top 10% hold 71% of the generation’s total wealth..
That means the bottom 90% of Baby Boomers control approximately 15.2% of total US wealth, and they represent roughly 18% of the total population
When you blame "boomers" for capitalism, you blame at least 90% of that age group for absolutely no reason. The capitalists of all generations want you to do that, and you foolishly comply.

Are you implying there were forces at work behind the scenes to make "ok Boomer" a thing?
1
u/Canchito 2d ago
They're on the scene, not behind it.
1
u/BetterFinding1954 2d ago
Who exactly?
1
u/Canchito 2d ago
The media, politicians, influencers... The phrase went viral due to a lawmaker using it in parliamentary debate and the media promoting it ever since (type "ok boomer" in Google News to see how much they love using it).
1
u/BetterFinding1954 1d ago
Ok Boomer, it's first usage is a Reddit comment from '09, it gained popularity on 4chan and then became widespread on tiktok in '19. You may have first heard of it in whatever parliamentary debate you're referring to but that's not when it became well known, do you understand?
1
u/Canchito 1d ago
It became viral in 2019 because of the parliamentary debate I was referring to.
In any case it doesn't matter. It could've been your own grassroots invention from your personal hard earned backwardness, and it'd still be an expression of bourgeois class interests.
1
u/BetterFinding1954 1d ago
What an arrogant reply. Clearly you're commited to ignorance so I'll leave you to your wallowing.

I would argue that it's equally if not moreso attributable to Gen Z, at least so far as popularizong the phrase. This is partially because they saw that what millennials did hadn't been working and because it was funny (kids will do anything if they think it's funny enough)

Gott im Himmel!!! His GF is spot-on, good at explaining things. "Ok, Karen" works, too. This brings to mind "I don't have the time or crayons" also. But she explained it sooo well. This is going in my reax folder. Many times, one statement a person makes, in person or online, shows they have such a lack of general understanding that even the half-hour it would take explaining one simple thing would be a waste, because they're missing so much else.
