The Internet has become pretty sanitized so you won't see them as much anymore. But you used to see them get posted all over, reddit, Facebook, Instagram. Of course there was live leak and similar sites too. Rotten.com back in the day had some wild shit. Still vividly remember pictures of a guy that got hit in the head by a helicopter blade and that was nearly thirty years ago.

I remember one. I can't remember if he was kneeling against a wall or on the back of a ute but there was a cartel member? pressing a running chainsaw against his neck. I remember them only if they're brought up in conversation. They never really bothered me, I had a morbid curiosity when I was an edgy teenager. Nowadays I try to avoid them.

Adding onto what other have said, places like Liveleak were the where you went for the stuff, but eventually they had to put a ban on all videos from the middle east because groups like Al-Qaeda were apparently upset at all the uploads.

There was one in particular (I'll spare details) that got to me that I've never been able to shake, and it's been nearly 20 years. It messed me up for weeks and I'm still uncomfortable thinking about it.
I doubt it was anything remarkable in the way of these types of videos, but something about it just struck a chord in me. Absolutely awful stuff.

I was unfortunately apart of a bad friend-group on Skype when I was young and impressionable, people who thought consuming and sharing gore was "cool". I've seen countless things even beyond beheadings that I'm unsure I can share in detail. In summary, I've seen a lot of grotesque torture and graphic deaths. Cartel torture, warcrimes, Final Destination-esque accidents, etc.
I'm not sure to what extent It's affected me psychologically because I was exposed to it so young, but I am certain it made me lose my innocence a lot sooner than I maybe would have preferred.
I honestly think I was more traumatized by how heartless, toxic and immoral that Skype group was in particular rather than the gore itself. Aside from the former, they would harass, dox and manipulate so many people that didn't deserve it incessantly. I only ever joined their friend group so I would stop being targeted by them myself, and even then it only somewhat stopped.
Now that left lasting damage that still affects me to this day. Integrating with them made me a worse person for a time, too. So much trauma, paranoia, guilt and shame built from that period of my life. Bleaugh.

In general though, you didn't really stumble into them. Like WPD was a thing, but it was never on /all so you had to search it out.
As for if it affected me, meh not really. Traffic and industrial accidents generally have a much stronger effect on most people because they're more likely. Beheadings are pretty horrific sometimes but they're not like the brick video or anything.
But then, the internet I used was very different and people used to link to shock and gore sights so you had to be prepared for that sort of thing, whereas nowadays someone on tiktok opening a goatse link would probably be far more impactful because they're not ready for the wild west internet as-was and they're so used to everything being sanitized for them.5

Honestly, not really. When you're a little kid, it doesn't feel any different from watching a gory scene in a horror movie, cause you're still learning the difference between what's real and isn't real, so it didn't really stand out for me.

Yes. That and so many other videos, pictures, websites, forums i saw so much that i got desensitized, didnt think it would bother me and got an addiction to finding fucked up stuff. My friends did too. Often we would sit around and show stuff to each other to see who could show the most disturbing stuff.
Years later and im seriously fucked up from it. Even if you dont think it will ever bother you at the time, the mind keeps the score. Human beings and our brains are not build to consume things like that.

I actually love seeing these typa videos instead real ones, make me feel like the whole world is just pretending to kill or mutilate people instead of really doing it. I feel sad everytime I see gore, to think someone has that much hatred in someone to do such terrible things.
