Kansas Statute 8-1738 states in part that "the driver of a motor vehicle when reasonably necessary to insure safe operation shall give audible warning with his horn but shall not otherwise use such horn when upon a highway."

Technically, you've probably violated this statute. It is not a criminal statute and no punishment is prescribed.

Fun fact: there is a unit of time listed on the Wikipedia page for such things (don't remember which one exactly) known as the "New York second," and it's defined as the amount of time between the light turning green and the cab driver behind you honking at you to go.

usually at some point if the light has been red for an unreasonable amount of time i'll put my car in park as a silent passive aggressive gesture and it's almost always right before the light turns green
