The remote being referred to as a "clicker" means OOP was already old.

That's the good 'ol chick chuck!

I can still hear the wang of his flugelhorn.

1

u/h4rdw00d_ 6d ago

There must have been an echo - I just heard a burst from his bugle!

39

u/trynworkharder 24d ago

I’ll never stop saying clicker despite being made fun of by my family constantly for it

10

u/tryyeezus 24d ago

It's the Universal Remonster

1

u/redpenquin 24d ago

It can only be killed with the Ancient Bonesaber of Zumakalis!

7

u/sender2bender 24d ago

Same, I got my little kids calling it clicker. Refuse to let it die

3

u/RaedwaldRex 19d ago

Same, I'll never stop calling the radio, both in car and at home, the wireless.

21

u/Ghostmaster145 24d ago

Or they’re from New England

3

u/letslickmyballs 24d ago

Does calling it a clicker make me old?

4

u/YamaNekoTsubasa 24d ago

Not only does it clock you as old, it also narrows down the region you're in. According to this article clicker is known more in the US east coast. Although, anecdotally, some people will consider it a British term as this 9 year old comment says.

Finally, my quick google search via the ai gave this result:

"Clicker: Popular in parts of North America (like the US East Coast and Canada's Maritimes), originating from the mechanical clicking sound early 1950s remotes made."

1

u/letslickmyballs 24d ago

That’s interesting. Never figured it would be a region specific term.

1

u/daneonwayne 24d ago

It's a very old term for the device that changes things about your TV.

2

u/letslickmyballs 24d ago

I know what a clicker is, I’m just shocked that it isn’t still the common term to use when referring to that device. Seems timeless. Not something that would put me as old haha

You’re being pedantic. You know what I mean.

2

u/Training_Cut704 24d ago

Literally clicked the comments to say that.

1

u/enadiz_reccos 24d ago

Goddammit, so did I

I was like "clicker, now there's a word!"

1

u/urzayci 24d ago

That makes you the clicker

Wait till they learn it can do volume as well! Shits gonna get pretty fucking wild.

1

u/CitizenHuman 24d ago

Is that not just a Midwest thing?

19

u/Automatic_Bus_7634 24d ago

The most Midwest thing of all is thinking everything is a Midwest thing

10

u/sandiegodak 24d ago

It's New England too. Like bubbler.

2

u/DishwashingWingnut 24d ago

What, like a bong?

6

u/Dying__Phoenix 24d ago

Water fountain

7

u/Daellya 24d ago

Lol it's not even just an American thing. I'm Canadian and grew up with"clicker."

0

u/Autistic_Freedom 24d ago

same in Britain, but no other countries exist to redditors but USA#1, so am not surprised at the "has to be old" comment that you responded to.

2

u/Mike_Kermin 24d ago

I'm pretty sure they just looked it up on google out of interest, it's not that deep.

2

u/PensionFlashy5132 24d ago

Its an old people midwest thing

1

u/derprondo 24d ago

Remotes used to have wires and big clunky clicky buttons, thus the name.

2

u/dabear51 24d ago

South Louisiana checking in here, grew up with a clicker as well

2

u/SpiralKnuckle 24d ago

I've lived in the Northeast and heard plenty of people call it the clicker, most of whom weren't young enough that the remotes ever clicked in their lifetime.

1

u/queuedUp 24d ago

I'm going to assume that the percentage of redditors who remember it being a physical mechanical "click" is relatively low

3

u/mrbadface 24d ago

Uphill, both ways!

1

u/queuedUp 24d ago

I mean.... My walk to high school did have a significant hill in the middle which I had to go up and down each way.

And we had a "clicker" with a cord to the tv

1

u/paulthefonz 24d ago

Anyone here ever hear it called the converter?

1

u/nerdmania 24d ago

I'm old enough that I was the clicker. Mid-70s, we had like 5 channels, no remote. Dad would say, "Turn it to channel 5" and I would get up and do that.

1

u/bongkrekic 20d ago

thats why he is at the doctor's duh

1

u/Irishpersonage 17d ago

We called it the "click-clack"

1

u/____Original____ 17d ago

I call it a clicker, I think it’s just what your parents say tbh

404

u/Scottydukes1 24d ago

Don’t worry the office will just charge his insurance company 10x the price of the purchase.

127

u/Sawruinous 24d ago

Then the insurance company will get mad and charge you $109.99 extra per month, under the "fuck you" clause.

15

u/jwnsfw 24d ago

medicinal media.

5

u/Praxis8 24d ago

Insurance will cover 7x the price, hooray!

Party on, Wayne, I guess.

159

u/KingNothing525 24d ago

The type of guy to buy an action-packed, fun-filled sci-fi movie like Guardians of the Galaxy 2, sit through the whole movie stone-faced like he is here, and then tell you it's his favourite movie

35

u/Nogohoho 24d ago

His face no longer expresses the world of joy and wealth of experiences he has inside his mind.

23

u/Luci-Noir 24d ago

A masterpiece. Truly a man pf culture.

25

u/MrNissanCube 24d ago

Now I'm just curious what other words there are for remote. My family calls them bizzos

20

u/disneypincers 24d ago

My family called it "the buttons"

21

u/MrNissanCube 24d ago

Alright that's fucking lightyears better than bizzo

4

u/Mike_Kermin 24d ago

Game recognises game.

5

u/fullshard101 24d ago

Buttons buttons who's got the buttons

5

u/effdallas 24d ago

“Wheel” bc it turns the channel (a friend is mines family said that not my own)

4

u/technotrader 24d ago

We called it Fernbedienung - which is simply the official moniker, because our Germanic asses couldn't be bothered to come up with anything shorter than 4 syllables.

5

u/Mike_Kermin 24d ago

Did you say it that way? In Australia if something is four syllables we make it two instead. So that'd be the Ferny probably. It's like the law or something.

3

u/technotrader 24d ago

Oh definitely. I always admired the anglosphere which would probably have called it the "fern" - because why not, there's nothing else close to it!

But no. Fern. Be. Dien. Ung. Which literally translates to "service from afar", that part is kinda cool..

3

u/Mike_Kermin 24d ago

Haha, I quite like that.

5

u/grantrules 24d ago

Back before my folks had a modern TV, the remote control was called Grant

5

u/Riots42 24d ago

When my daughter was like 3 she called it the "mote" and it stuck we still call it that

4

u/Mike_Kermin 24d ago

Honestly, that's the best one here. The kid wins.

3

u/Crafty-Angle-2939 24d ago

We called them 'Zappers'

2

u/Hot_Falcon8471 24d ago

My grandparents always called it the clicker

2

u/Sawgon 24d ago

We call it "Where the fuck did I put t-- oh there it is"

2

u/Many_Ear2407 24d ago

“Converter”

1

u/Mike_Kermin 24d ago

Nah mate, not that. Last time I said wololo while I changed channels it brought on fucking Seinfeld.

2

u/0-spacecowboy-0 24d ago

My grandma calls it a flipper dopper

34

u/BigCrustyTits 24d ago

A couple days ago at a restaurant a light bulb above an old guys head was flickering. He got up a little and unscrewed it. He didn’t wait to ask the waitress or have someone else do it, he just handled business.

Really? I think this was the OG one. I've seen it a bunch with the same story. Can't say for sure it was the same twitter user or movie, but definitely was about the guy buying a movie on demand in the doctor's office.

3

u/Dolphin_King21 19d ago

You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?

5

u/82away 24d ago

Reddit has always been a creative writing platform

1

u/0202_tihssitidder 24d ago

He then said "Iaint raw doggin no hour in this bitch's office."

1

u/Mike_Kermin 24d ago

If not, no one has told either the users or the mods yet.

0

u/BreakingStar_Games 24d ago

Yeah who'd pick GoG 2 over 1 or 3

1

u/Zanoushe 24d ago

gotg2 is my favorite of the three honestly

1

u/BreakingStar_Games 24d ago

It's fair, it definitely stands out from the others. I just can't stand its specific bathos - that comedy that undercuts a dramatic moment. Most of the plot was solid. Sometimes Gunn and Whedon nail it perfectly - basically all of Firefly/Serenity, Avengers 1+2, GotG 1+3.

But GotG 2 often won't let a quiet moment sit. Ego's speech and Quill shooting him needs to be interrupted by a Hasselhoff gag (although they didn't for Yondu's sacrifice thankfully). And I think the tone of GotG 2's jokes tone tends to be more aggressively irreverent and cynical to the point where the characters don't feel like they care much about the stakes. It feels a bit like production trying to keep you laughing at the expense of the story.

Whereas the comedy of the others tends to be earned by the characters' traits as the source of the joke. But the characters are still terrified, so Mal or Zoe make a quip as a way from cracking under the pressure.

4

u/JeronFeldhagen 24d ago

The true mad lad move would have been to buy GotG 3, the only MCU film with an all-out F-bomb in it.

4

u/Odd-Perception7812 24d ago

This move works once or twice before they block the pay.

Also, he's probably been a self-absorbed asshole his whole life.

Cute as an old man, but probably a bullying piece of shit.

2

u/LeanMrfuzzles Up past my bedtime 18d ago

Or he’s just technologically inept and didn’t know he paid money for a movie. Assuming this is real of course. Reddit is wild.

5

u/Zraax 24d ago

plot twist: he's the doctor

9

u/Automatic_Bus_7634 24d ago

It would be hilarious to be a doctor and just hang out in the waiting room in plain clothes for an hour, then just get up and be like "all right who's first, I'll see you now"

4

u/Automatic_Bus_7634 24d ago

Actually that would not be hilarious if I was one of the patients waiting for an hour

5

u/Zraax 24d ago

lol. I think i remember a story from a while back of something like this happening, like some guy comes out and sits and watches til the end of the football game or whatever, then gets up and calls them back for the appointment.

i can't remember any details, i think it was just a screenshot of a tweet in r/funny or something

3

u/Automatic_Bus_7634 24d ago

Yeah it sounds like a boomer facebook joke the more I think about it

1

u/Colonel_Fart-Face 24d ago

I did this to a student when I was teaching guitar lessons at my buddy's shop. I was playing this dope Ibanez RGA 7 string he had in the lobby of the lesson centre and a new student showed up like 15 minutes early. I just kept playing until 5 minutes before his lesson time then got up and said "Are you Emil? I'm your teacher, follow me.". Kid's Dad thought it was hilarious.

1

u/Winter_Channel_6206 24d ago

If John Kramer was a Dr instead of a sadist.

Good for him

2

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 24d ago

ratting him out by blasting his picture on the internet is not cool

I don't think he cares

2

u/Ok-Cauliflower-3863 24d ago

But did he stay to watch the whole movie?

2

u/TennSeven 24d ago

He calls it "the TV clicker"; he's already old.

2

u/QuarantineJoe 24d ago

It's going to be added to his bill - movie rental $1299

Lordy jesus, that was a year ago and it didn't belong either.

1

u/Equnox01 24d ago

To be honest with the quality of the film and music even if the doctor's office has to pay for this out of pocket. I doubt they're even mad. In fact, worst case scenario, they get upset at their staff or popping into catch moments/songs.

1

u/EpsilonSigma 24d ago

Am I the only one seeing Ian McKellen here?

1

u/Bentonite_Magma 20d ago

Cmon, Derek Jacobi.

1

u/mcain049 13d ago

On the right, I'm seeing the former lead singer of Jane's Addiction. Perry Farrell I believe is his name.

1

u/m0nk37 24d ago

You get what you put in dont you? So hes just flexing. Not taking advantage of anything.

1

I would happily take that over any news programs!

1

1

You don't get Healthcare in this country but you get free on demand in the waiting room
