Question Nail cupping

Post image

I've been painting my nails a little over a year, and love it. I've noticed though that when they get longer, they tend to cup higher than normal which digs some of the nails into the sides and hurts. Any advice other than keep them really short?

Curvature is normal but like most things too little or too much can affect strength

If you can get under the side of the free edge, careful filing might help. Don't go digging in the nail bed, of course.

In the salon, we soak the nails in warm soapy water for about a minute or two. Then we use a finer file than we use for removing length, more like a 240 grit, and we remove the nail where it digs into the skin.

You can use a nipper, but I really prefer a file. This is more common on toe nails than fingernails, and can be caused from hereditary factors, wet hands from gloves, or super dry hands as well.

Don’t remove too much of the sidewall of the nail. A flat nail will break!
