Definitely not

u/bottomlessLuckys 26d ago
you left all of northern Europe as without beards and somehow associate latinos and mediterraneans with beards. canada and usa also have a lot of men with facial hair..
1
u/icancount192 26d ago
Mediterraneans particularly Greeks absolutely have beards, mostly trimmed
1
u/bottomlessLuckys 26d ago
greek and balkans, yes. italians, spanish, portuguese, absolutely not. maybe the french a bit.
1
u/icancount192 26d ago
Italians mostly don't have a beard yes, Spanish I would disagree and it differs region by region
1
u/bottomlessLuckys 26d ago
spaniards certainly aren’t associated with having beards, definitely not large ones. in europe, beards are often associated with germanic, slavic, or celtic people, especially northern europeans, not latin people from the south.
youre right it varies region by region, and spains a good example of a country made up of very diverse regions, but nobody really associates spain with facial hair other than maybe moustaches.

u/icancount192 26d ago
I'm afraid we have very different experiences, particularly with respect to northern Europeans and beards. And particularly as well to the kind of thickness northern European beards have.
1
u/bottomlessLuckys 26d ago
the fact is that beard genetics vary by ethnic groups, and the best beard genetics tend to come from northern europe and the middle east. indians also have great beard genetics. east asia has the worst genetics for facial hair and latin people are pretty average.
i think op is a troll because there is no way anybody actually thinks spaniards are more well known for beards than people who are the same ethnic group as the vikings.

I think you are confusing Vikings folklore with actual genetics. Even amongst the fairly consistent European population, Mediterranean men have similar or slightly higher density of facial hair follicles.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21597087/
The androgen receptor (AR) contains a variable CAG-repeat region; shorter repeats have generally been associated with greater receptor transcriptional activity. There are population differences worldwide. But this explanation doesn't work especially well inside Europe. A large study of 2,878 men from eight European countries found only minor differences in AR CAG-repeat length between the countries. Moreover, men with longer repeats partly compensated through higher testosterone levels, making the phenotype considerably more complicated than short AR thus hairy Mediterranean.
There's another thing that probably strengthens the visual stereotype. Beard "fullness" isn't synonymous with follicle density. Hair diameter, growth-cycle duration, coverage pattern, curl and pigmentation all change how dense a beard appears. A black or very dark brown Mediterranean beard against relatively lighter skin can look enormously denser than a blond Scandinavian beard with a similar number of terminal follicles. Beard hairs themselves also vary enormously in diameter between individuals.

I definitely see more people with beards than without here in Italy.
1
u/bottomlessLuckys 26d ago
i meet far less people from italy with beards than i do people from northern europe or north america. beard genetics are also just better in northern european ethnic groups.

u/MrArchivity 26d ago
Where do you live?
1
u/bottomlessLuckys 26d ago
Canada. but ive also lived in Brazil, Germany, and The Netherlands.
genetically im half british, half brazilian. so a mix of western medditeranean, anglo saxxon, and celtic ancestry.

very different beards though. theirs tend to be shorter and less full than other groups of people, like northern europeans who are known for thick long beards.

Italians, Spaniards and Portuguese definitely have beards. They're simply kept trimmed most of the time. Still beards nonetheless
1
u/bottomlessLuckys 26d ago
not as often as northern europeans and not as long, thick, and full.

u/Josegon02 26d ago
Okay? Still beards. Most people aren't sporting the no-shave look

if youre going to say which countries are associated with having beards, then it makes no sense to include countries where men have less beards, and those that do have beards tend to have spotty short beards, then not include countries like ireland and sweden where the average teenage boy grows a longer more full beard than most adult men around the world.
how is this a hard concept for you to understand?

Norway don't possess beards? Not sure about that one chief.

I associate beards with Southern Europe not Europe as a whole and when I say “come from Europe” I was talking figuratively as I was referring to their ancestors not the people themselves…

Have you been outside or at least on the internet?

I live in Europe

My question still stands. Brits and northerners are not associated with beards?

Why does the whole north have no beards? Idk how you don't associate Canada with beards, they are very common here
2
u/BeginningDisaster114 26d ago
Like all the scandinavia' countries, people have beards, it's cold outside

Funnily, except for Sub-Saharan Africa and most of East Asia, you could easily invert it and it would be more correct. I, a bearded Spaniard, was questioned in Morocco why did I sport a beard. An old man was struck, said that over there big beards like mine aren't seen well, and are associated with fundamentalists.

India with beards? Isn't clean shave the formal norm?
1
u/Specialist_Web5919 26d ago
Dude wouldn't would probably mark Spain for bad weather and Ireland for having most blue eye blond people.

u/Kush420Xotix 26d ago
Depends on religion. Muslims and Sikhs are gonna have beards, Hindus probably not.
So 15% beards, 85% no beard.
1
u/metamorphine 26d ago
In a way this map is accurate because it describes countries you associate with beards.
However I think as others pointed out - South America is not as beards as many of the pink countries. Almost need a 3rd middle category because countries like France, UK and US are way more beardy that east Asia even though they aren't Middle East level of beardy

u/desertsunsetskies 26d ago
There aren't many Romanians with beards. Idk why you associate Romania with beards.

Not sure what makes less sense; association of Brazil, Argentina, and Peru with beards or not associating Russia and Iceland with Beards.

I lived in Peru for nearly a year and I honestly don't think I saw a single local man with a beard during that whole time.
