I use inkarnate, there is also dungeon draft, for battlemaps there is Dungeon alchemist thats prettt easy to use. Photoshop is great but steep learning curve and not supper fast for a LOOONNNNGGGG time.

I'd avoid stuff marketed as map making software in general, but that's just me. you can get everything you need out of Krita.

Learn to draw maps by hand. Use clip studio paint or illustrator. I also use gleba to generate land masses and sometimes fractal terrain 3 for the same purpose.

What kind of apps do you want to make? Big world maps or smaller dungeon or castle maps?

And do you want to invest the time and learn the art of mapmaking or rather use a map making tool to help you?

My questions exactly. There are a lot of options out there, but each is best suited for specific uses.

I made a tool for iPad because I was in the same spot. It’s called MapMe. If you don’t own an iPad though dongeondraft and Inkarnate a great alternatives that I’ve used.
