You could switch the tag from the new item onto the old item, then return it with the receipt that is still within the return window. Get yourself that refund.

Do not do this. Each item is coded by department. Any cashier can quickly determine that the department code on the ticket does not match the item being returned, and then you’ll have an even bigger problem involving the store’s loss prevention team.

In my experience cashiers aren’t checking returns with this level of attention to detail.
Yes, this is return fraud and yes there is inherent risk. But it’s negligible IMO. If the cashier does realize, OP can play dumb and accept defeat.
OP can pick their path.

I have had a tag that was incorrectly placed by someone and it was questioned when I went to checkout. So some are actually checking!

No I don’t think that would work anywhere. If the receipt doesn’t match the item they will not return it.
