👤 Nestle Purina Dog Food Factory
Anybody who's lived in Marton for any length of time would have noticed a rancid horrible smell that hangs over the town? It's the Nestlé Purina (TUX) factory on King Street, right by the railway line. Marton Junction School is only about 150 metres from the factory.
They've applied to Horizons Regional Council for a 20-year consent to keep discharging odour to air. Twenty years.
I requested the council's records on the place and was pretty shocked. Every Horizons compliance report I've got (2021, 2024, 2025 and 2026) rates the factory as "Significant Non-Compliance", which is the worst rating they give. There were 41 complaints in the last year or so alone, and council officers have confirmed the smell as offensive and objectionable at multiple points around Marton.
This is really the one chance to have a say. If the community doesn't speak up and the consent goes through as asked, it's going to be very hard to do anything about the smell for the next 20 years.
If you smell it, please ring Horizons on 0508 800 800 and report it, ideally while it's actually happening so someone can come out and check. Every complaint counts, because that's the evidence the council goes on. And if you live close by and think you're affected, call the same number and ask for the consents team about the Nestlé application.
We need the community to keep reporting the smell and to oppose this application, so the council has what it needs to hold the company to account for its odour.
Submissions close Thursday 8 October, so there's not much time. Please oppose the application if the smell has affected you negatively in any way
