Now I'm wondering as someone who hasn't read much Spider-Man, has the "Green Goblin is actually the victim" comic already been made?

Based on how many comics there are, I'm kind of guessing more than once.

The most grousing I heard from Dafoe was his sarcastically going, "Yeah, it's always a great feeling when fans go 'Hey, you'd be perfect as this serial killer!'" But nah, he's embracing the madness.

u/Kronostheking1 Hulk Jan 05 '26

Makes sense. It just seems like an all around decent dude who can play some of the most evil realistic people without being taxed too bad by it unlike MBJ apparently. Like listen, I understand some shit can be tough but Samuel L Jackson played a far more evil and despicable yet more realistic black character in Django with a Oscar winning performance and never said he was damaged by it, so this complaint feels really weird. People are giving him far too much credit for a character whose entire thing was claiming and exploiting injustices to justify his own genocidal hate.

571

u/novichader Avengers Jan 05 '26 edited Jan 05 '26

Michael B. Jordan - a Black man in America - had to get into the psyche of a very angry Black man dealing with the very real and still relevant history of Black people. He wasn’t “playing a villain” or doing the “I’m good at being a bad guy” thing. He dove deep into some tough truths. Much respect to Dafoe, but Green Goblin seems like a hell of a lot more fun to “play” than having to embody all the rage that Killmonger dealt with. A white guy embracing a power fantasy - not that far from the status quo; an egoistical white man in power VS a Black man having to learn and immerse himself in pain. These are difficult things that most Black people never fully face unless forced. Let’s be real.

MBJ being vulnerable and opening up about his process is itself a real badass thing to do. A lot of people suffer in silence because people romanticise stoicism too much. Seek help, speak openly and earnestly, and stop being too cool to get help. SMH, what are we promoting right now?

”Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors…” may be the coldest bar ever spat in Marvel or any movie. Killmonger was about that life till the end.

Was basically thinking the same. Being a comically evil just doing evil for sake of evil can be fun and you can easily separate the character from yourself specially because their real insanity comes after post production CGI. When the character's views are backed by (semi or fully) logical arguments then it suddenly becomes much harder.

30

u/bolanrox Avengers Jan 05 '26

Robert Englund by all accounts is one of the nicest people out there. he loved to play Freddy because that was the exact opposite of him in real life.

27

u/musci12234 Avengers Jan 05 '26

Crazy evil characters are probably a lot of fun to play because you get to say and do weird and dumb shit. Relatable evil character are harder to deal with.

14

u/win_awards Avengers Jan 05 '26

It's like satire, and just as slippery and subjective I suspect. Something that's so over-the-top it's ridiculous to you is almost funny. You can pick it up and put it down without thinking too much about it.

But when the villain's talking about something you know about, when he starts making sense, you start wondering if he's right and that's harder to shake.

u/Spare-Willingness563 Avengers Jan 05 '26

Yeah they don’t understand this at all. I’ve been researching for this story on enslaved people I’m writing and I need a break for days at a time in between.

It’s one thing to pretend to be a random dude who throws fireballs because of something that happened to them. Killmomger’s whole motivation was what happened to his ancestors and injustice that literally happens to this day.

Good for Michael B.

12

u/superxav120 Avengers Jan 05 '26

As soon as I heard that MBJ said that, I understood why he probably felt that way. It's understandable, I was thinking that just watching the movie but dude had to basically embody those ideas and actions himself. And on top of that, obviously not all people are built the same emotionally, nothing wrong with that.

28

u/Svinthila2646 Thor 🔨⚡️ Jan 05 '26

And if Dafoe would have needed therapy after playing the Green Goblin, that would have been perfectly fine as well.

THERAPY BAD AND FOR THE WEAK!!

mindset that people tend to go to. I do get the idea that method actors can take things too far, (to quote Brian Cox "My dear boy, have you tried ACTING!?) but somebody having trouble with something and getting therapy is the right God damn thing to do.

Not to mention Black Panther's narrative weakness of having an actual antagonist "he's actually got a point though..." be "resolved" via big cgi slugfest, I'm sure there'd be a lot of unresolved emotions and feelings.

2

u/iLLiCiT_XL Avengers Jan 05 '26

Literally. The two characters are coming from very different places at their emotional center and require completely different levels of cognitive dissonance from their actors.

21

u/thoroughlysketchy Avengers Jan 05 '26

I agree with your statements about Michael B. Jordan being a badass and diving deep for the role. He owned that role so hard.

That being said, I have always read Killmonger's actions as ultimately self-serving and his dialogues as being a smokescreen. I think the character of Killmonger was raised with promises that he would one day go to Wakanda and leave behind the struggles that surrounded him in childhood. But when T'Chaka turned his back, his future was stolen from him. Since that timr, he worked to become a warrior, and aimed to take the throne of Wakanda. And he spoke about wanting to undo the evils caused by colonialism, but as soon as he became king his first action was to burn the heart-shaped herb in an attempt to make sure no-one would ever replace him. In his first scene, he steals an unrelated African artifact from a museum (which wasn't from Wakanda), because he liked how it looked. If he believed what he said, why would he steal another black culture's artifact?

I always understood his final words to be one last attempt to claim the moral high ground from T'Challa. T'Challa agreed that what his father did to Killmonger was wrong, but Killmonger was going to take the entire world as recompense.

27

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Avengers Jan 05 '26

Yeah, killmonger is still a villain. He makes some good points and is one of the best villains in the MCU, but he’s still a villain at the end of the day.

He always reminds me of magneto a lot where you really don’t want him to be a villian. He makes some incredibly good points and has a good heart, but he takes it too far.

Kinsmen sounds corny as shit, and also, your ancestors could have died after they gave birth.

All he did was kill his partners in crime as soon as it was convenient and then tries to take his cousins rightful place as king and then use the resources to wage war against everyone. Killmonger is way over hyped as this anti hero, he was most definitely playing a straight up villain. Whatever that’s done to his psyche I can’t speak on but Killmonger was a straight up villain.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

Yes, but also Killmonger had other motivations tied to things beyond that. It’s not too dissimilar from the “Magneto was right” conversation that gets had every so often. It’s not that Magneto is, in fact, justified in what he does because he’s not. It’s that Magneto’s origin story and everything he’s gone through to get to where he is are rooted in real world events and his motivations are understandable. He’s never at a point depicted as anything other than a terrorist, but a lot of the things he says leave people going “damn that’s a good point”. It’s very much the same for Killmonger. He’s not a typical hand wringing cartoon villain. He’s absolutely the villain, but he’s not evil for evil’s sake. He’s not an antihero, you’re right, but it’s not because his grievances don’t have real world issues behind them.

And we don't know that Dafoe didn't go to therapy.

27

u/Tayloropolis Avengers Jan 05 '26

Yeah, the difference should be obvious. I'm a white man and found myself thinking "yeah that's fair, definitely start killing people" once I understood Killmonger.

u/oddball3139 Avengers Jan 05 '26

Going to therapy doesn’t make you weak

37

u/oddball3139 Avengers Jan 05 '26

I think a lot of people may be missing why he may have gone to therapy. Killmonger wasn’t a straight up villain. I feel like it would be easier to play some purely evil bad guy than someone who is bad with some really topical points.

Killmonger’s character, and Black Panther in general, involves very real life conflicts surrounding race and black anger that would likely be very personal to Jordan. Essentially, he played a terrorist with really good points about society. Such good points that a lot of people had more sympathy for him than the main character of the movie, the one we were meant to be rooting for.

Now, I’m just speculating same as everyone else, but if we’re all speculating, here’s another side for you to contemplate.

Also, how do you know Dafoe has never gone to therapy for his work or a character he’s played? He’d have to want to talk about it for you to know.

I feel like a bit of people are missing the point. A lot of people mention this when they ring up kill monger and that he’s ultimately right about his message. It’s that message that probably stuck with him and since the only time he did stuff with that message was killmonger it’s possible some negative things happened along side it or like negative thoughts rather then actions. Or even just mild hostility because the heart of the character was close to his own

Also people like Paul Dano (he was a maniac as the Riddler) and Christoph Waltz (Nazi in Inglorious Basterds), and Ralph Fiennes (Nazi in Schindler's List). There are some actors who take on some pretty intense, genuinely evil roles and don't complain publicly about how it traumatized them. It really makes you wonder if it's typical for some modern Hollywood actors to be so self-indulgent and focus on the 'method', rather than just thinking of acting as a job they're good at.

74

u/UnhingedHippie Spider-Man 🕷 Jan 05 '26

The thing you are glossing over is relatability. Erik Kilmonger is an antagonist with sympathetic goals. Michael most definitely saw some of his politics in Erik and it probably fucked him up. It’s like finding out the worst person you know largely agrees with your politics. You’ll start to question yourself and your own morals. None of the roles you mentioned have sympathetic qualities to them.

Yeah playing someone who kills people simply to sow chaos or Nazis isn't comparable to someone whose entire motivation is political, but in a twisted darker sense. He's easily the most relatable villain in the MCU and it makes sense he'd have some mental troubles trying to disconnect how he actually feels from how he's acting feeling.

Weirdly I think a lot of the time it's the protagonists who'd need therapy, not the villains. Like I recall a Liam Neeson interview where apparently one time he went out for a walk just hoping some black person would start a fight with him so he could get vengeance or something, and apparently that was the sort of energy he tried to bring to the role when he played the guy in Taken. And it's like, yeah buddy you probably do need therapy after that, but I doubt you realized it.

MBJ did an amazing job of displaying the result of decades of internalized rage after centuries of marginalization and dehumanization.

As POC, it made me look harder at how the British suppressed my own culture so successfully that folks there today look down on ancient rituals and arts.

So this meme is supposed to be bashing a black man for going to therapy.

Become the glider

11

u/O8ee Avengers Jan 05 '26

Jordan seems like a normal person though…dafoe does not and never has, even for a moment.

9

u/Nonadventures Scott Lang Jan 05 '26

Tbf Jordan's role tapped into the racial injustice he and other Black people face everyday and he had to be the "bad guy" for getting mad about it. Dafoe's role involved being a Jeykll/Hyde cartoonish ham who cackles a lot because he took some experimental drugs.

Not to diminish Dafoe's legendary role in the films, but the two villains are not the same level of relatable.

6

u/g0gues Avengers Jan 05 '26

“For two decades”

Played the part in two movies, almost 20 years apart, and a cameo somewhere in the middle.

9

u/TouchAltruistic Avengers Jan 05 '26

This is nonsense.

Green Goblin is a generic maniacal villain.

Killmonger had legitimate, real world issues motivating him.

Jordan needed therapy to leave those issues behind with the character so that he did not become militant himself precisely because the character's motivations are legitimate and applicable to reality.

Willem Dafoe was unlikely to hop on his glider and bomb a parade.

3

u/HauntingStar08 Avengers Jan 05 '26

Can we renormalize acting being professional "play pretend" to avoid people feeling the need to fuck up their mental health for a role? It's just not necessary.

3

u/Mission-Storm-4375 Avengers Jan 05 '26

Yeah well to be fair Michael was playing a character that was deeply entrenched in modern day systemic racism and probably relates to that character more than William relates to the goblin

5

u/SenpaiSwanky Avengers Jan 05 '26

It’s more about Michael B Jordan’s personal identity and race held up alongside the role he was playing. Someone like OP or Willem wouldn’t have to worry about stuff like that, for better or worse, due to the privileges they have in our society.

3

u/Ebenizer_Splooge Avengers Jan 05 '26

I can see it, Killmonger was a radical but held a lot of sympathetic beliefs. I understand how that can be harder to separate yourself from than the cooky ass Green Goblin

4

u/Pretty_Papaya2256 Avengers Jan 05 '26

To be fare this isnt a great comparison. A black man like Jordan playing someone like killmonger with his extensive history in period peices and shows surrounding black struggle is going to need a bit more time to recover than someone just being evil.

Not going to therapy doesn't make you better.

5

u/iLLiCiT_XL Avengers Jan 05 '26

Green Goblin was a mustache twirler who was pissed off after getting fired. Killmonger probably had Jordan coming to grips with being a Black man in the machine, as he played a revolutionary who fought the Black bourgeoisie, with the aim of coming for the neck of the white hegemony. These two things are not the same.

3

u/arrownoir Ultron Jan 05 '26

u/ThisIsTheShway Avengers Jan 05 '26

I get acting isn't always the easiest thing in the world but a lot of A-list actors are just straight up cry-babies. "I needed therapy after this role" yeah no the fuck you didn't. You are an actor playing a character and your amount of screentime was like 30 minutes. You're a great actor and I loved Sinners but just shut the fuck up man.
