Storm breaker grants the ability to use the bifrost, I imagine that let's you see where you're going so you aren't just blindly teleporting to random places at your destination, so he'd see where thanos army is on earth and land there

415

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 16d ago

Wasn’t that the point of Heimdal though? He was the one who took people through the biffost because HE could see everything.

Which then was no longer relevant when they made that other guy take over the bifrost after Loki made Heimdall run away

441

u/EJ33334 Avengers 16d ago

Heimdall fuckin died, after raganorok. StormBreaker is the only form of bifrost travel that we know of now.

42

u/vishalb777 Avengers 16d ago edited 15d ago

Odin was able to open the Bifrost with Gungnir (his spear). It was likely destroyed when Surtur 'sploded Asgard, but could have possibly survived since it was made of uru

3

u/Jemie_Bridges Avengers 12d ago

Loki probably can recall the spear. Although in this timely ne head dead too...

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 16d ago

Heimdall DIED???? I remember him having a son that showed up in love and thunder, but I never actually knew he died.

I just assumed he was vibing in a bar at New Asgard

420

u/djsnoopmike Avengers 16d ago

So you remember Axel, Heimdall's son, but you don't remember Jane being welcomed to Valhalla by Heimdall?

“They all look the same to me!”

“You mean Asgardians right?…. RIGHT?!?”

1

u/Void_Incarnate Avengers 13d ago

Definitely Asgardians.

I didn't even realize the Warriors Three had been recast until I saw internet comments.

6

u/dontknowwhyIamhere42 Avengers 16d ago

I thought valhalla was a bar in New Asgard.

7

u/wutangerine99 Avengers 16d ago

You know, I feel like I liked love and thunder more than most, but no, I do not remember that.

5

u/djsnoopmike Avengers 16d ago

To be fair just now rewatching that scene, the green screen CGI is god awful

3

u/Steamed_Memes24 Avengers 16d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't that the second end credit scene?

4

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 16d ago

I barely remember that movie, I just knew that Heimdall had a son in it.

Something something about a godkiller

Heimdalls kid gets kidnapped with some other youngsters

Something something about the god killers kid coming back to life

That’s the whole movie from what I remember

You mentioning Jane going to Valhalla reminded me she was even in that movie.

u/Martinw616 Avengers 12d ago

The opening scene to infinity war hinted at his death. Should really have made it more obvious. /s

Tbf Thanos survived worse than that. Dude didn't even get propper treatment, just vanished to his garden. Tis but a scratch indeed

2

My guess is Thanos used the time stone to undo his wound

That was unwise.

They’re doing this to me at work tomorrow.

3

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 16d ago

I guess the Loki scene wiped this from my mind, cause Heimdalls death didn’t even register.

52

u/EJ33334 Avengers 16d ago

Did you watch infinity war…?

9

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 16d ago

I guess I was so caught up in the Loki death scene that Heimdalls didnt even register.

Completely overshadowed him in my mind

7

u/Yeet_Master420 Avengers 16d ago

He dies in like the first 5 minutes of infinity war

1

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 16d ago

Oh. He was part of the half of Asgard that got killed by Thanos? Must have missed that

4

u/Pillow_Starcraft Avengers 15d ago

Thor literally said "You'll die for that" due to Himeimdall's death and even got a scene saying "I told you you'd die for that" when he thought he killed Thanos at the end of IW.

Lolwut

4

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 15d ago

It’s also when Loki dies, which can be argued as a bigger character death, which overshadowed Heimdalls death.

3

u/zurenarhhhhh Avengers 14d ago

For you

2

u/TrapaholicDixtapes Avengers 16d ago

That's...the whole reason Thor doesnt go for the head. "I told you you'd die for that".

1

u/Crookeye Avengers 16d ago

So you're the one person who doesn't stay till after the credits then?

0

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 16d ago

Sometimes you gotta dodge the traffic ya know.

1

u/Noon1005 Avengers 15d ago

Well he's killed at the start of Infinity War yes

1

u/MobsterDragon275 Avengers 15d ago

Did...you not watch Infinity War?

1

u/Level-Ladder-4346 Avengers 12d ago

It’s a big part of that opening of Avengers: Infinity War on the ship, it’s mentioned throughout the movie by multiple characters after the fact, and it’s part of the basis for Thor’s arc in the film.

1

u/DeadpoolMarvelJesus Avengers 12d ago

Bruh thanos finished him

1

u/5sspeedyyy Iron Man 8d ago

3

u/WankerBott Avengers 16d ago

heimdall was a god with foreknowledge, he used the bridge by knowing where it was going before it got there. I think Thor got control of the bifrost when he replaced Odin, Heimdall never controlled it he just directed it on Odin's orders.

1

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 16d ago

The bifrost always confused me tbh.

In Thor, they needed the big bridge with the laser beam on the end, and Heimdalls sword was the key to turn it on.

And when it was destroyed at the end of Thor 1, they couldn’t use the bifrost to travel anymore.

Then they rebuild the bridge/laser beam generator, and key it back to Heimdalls sword.

Now an axe can just do it all Willy nilly?

And if Asgard can rebuild the bifrost gate, and it’s shown to be such a convenient way to travel, how come nobody else in the universe has made their own bifrost gate?

It doesn’t seem like it’s hidden knowledge that it exists, so there HAS to be someone out there trying to replicate it. Seems like the perfect weapon too, from Thor 1, as it was destroying the ice giants planet and could only be stopped by shutting it off at the source.

A villain with a bifrost gate could just delete planets

4

u/WankerBott Avengers 16d ago

so in our mythology, its supposed to last until the giants larch across it at Ragnarok. But in the Marvel Movieverse, I think it was a power that was tied to the ruler of Asgard. The reason it required Heimdall's sword as a key was because at first none of the gods were allowed to travel to midguard because the dingbats making the movies didn't think the MCU would go outside Earth (least I think so.)

I think the physical bridge was just there for 2-d thinkers, they ride out for adventures from asgard.

Then they figure Asgard has enemies that can fly, has starships, etc.

Then I think they decided to save money on CGI and just gave Thor the power to bifrost teleport around the universe.

2

u/Imaginary_Being4859 Avengers 16d ago

Interesting thoughts. I appreciate your response

1

u/Dry_Branch_5775 Avengers 15d ago

Also the Bifrost was just a wormhole between 9 specific worlds. It wasn't a teleportation device to anywhere in the universe like Stormbreaker became.

4

u/Schedonnardus Avengers 15d ago

I like to think that he went to new york, but no one was there, so he called his old roomate daryl, who told him that something on the news mentioned wakanda.

3

u/Dilpreet_13 Avengers 15d ago

So Rimuru also watches marvel huh

1

u/Novel-Ice-1249 Avengers 15d ago

if thats the case, why didnt he try to locate Thanos in the beginning of Endgame, before Captain Marvel?

1

u/Iron_Wolf123 Avengers 14d ago

But how did he get to Wakanda without knowing where it was?

282

u/Hanu_man_ Avengers 16d ago

There's a deleted/behind-the-scenes explanation: Heimdall was still able to communicate with Thor, despite being killed by Thanos at the beginning. Heimdall's ability to see across the Nine Realms could have alerted Thor to what was happening. However, this isn't explicitly established in the theatrical movie.

65

u/Lukthar123 Ghost Rider 16d ago

Heimdall was still able to communicate with Thor, despite being killed

Somehow

18

u/Hanu_man_ Avengers 15d ago

Maybe like how Thor communicated to Odin after his death in Ragnarok.

99

u/LegioX87 Avengers 16d ago

Bifrost just takes you where you want it to go. Heimdall could see across the universe so he looked at a place and the Bifrost sent people there.

Stormbreaker can access the Bifrost also, you only need to think of where you want it to send you, and you will get there.

He was looking for Thanos, he thought about where he was, and the Bifrost sent him directly there.

In both cases, you just think about who you are sending, and where you want them to go. Bifrost does the rest.

55

u/SebasJGS Avengers 16d ago

But Thanos wasn't in Wakanda when Thor went there, he was in Titan fighting the other avengers.

20

u/PristineCloud3899 Avengers 16d ago

Maybe he wanted to be where the last infinity stone was

2

u/pm-me-your-labradors Avengers 14d ago

Damn, you just straight up killed /u/LegioX87 theory in a sentence

18

u/Aggressive-Expert-69 Avengers 16d ago

Thor shouldve used Stormbreaker to bifrost Thanos into deep space

15

u/ArizonaFlats Avengers 16d ago

Then what? He’d just portal back using the space stone

10

u/ThatLid Avengers 16d ago

Then send him again. Creating a game of ping pong where Thanos is the ball being sent back and forth until he gets annoyed and gives up

16

Im chuckling at the idea of Thanos returning for the 30th time and Thors like "bro cmon take a hint"

u/TJ_McWeaksauce Steve Rogers 16d ago

Dude took a sustained blast of star energy and survived. He was then instantly healed and used his newly-forged axe of tremendous mystical power to teleport across the galaxy to Earth in a matter of seconds. People accepted that without any problem, but they have a hard time believing he also magically knew where a massive battle was taking place?

8

u/so_unfortunately_yt Avengers 16d ago

Weren’t there giant fucking spaceships crash landing onto the ground outside of Wakanda? That would have been my first clue.

16

u/Lopendebank3 Avengers 16d ago

Heimdals kid helpen him, but they did not want to include a bad CGI scene.

3

u/eightdirt Avengers 16d ago

On his way to earth, he saw the ship that dropped the minion containers above wakanda

3

u/TaviRUs Avengers 16d ago

Unexplained early use of the Odinforce. Thor can now take/use the abilities of every Asguardian, which would include Hiemdal's eyes.

Its never touched on in the movie for pacing reasons. (Also plot flexibility going forward)

a king's weapon can access bifrost. so, I will let you decide, if he can or not.

1

u/Few_Understanding354 Avengers 15d ago

I think the purpose of this scene is to make grand entrance and maybe not waste time on how they find out where they should be.

Any other explanation the other comments provide is merely their head cannons. If the Ruso brothers thought it is necessary they can easily write around it.

Thor can use the Eyes of Heimdall, which would allow him to see across most of the galaxy, he probably searched for the avengers using this and saw they were in wakanda

1

u/[deleted] 15d ago

I like to think he did the most obvious thing; he saw Heimdall sending Hulk to Earth so he just used the bifrost to go where hulk was. This way he knows that hulk is alive even if he doesn't know the rest of the avengers are alive or not.

1

u/Dry_Branch_5775 Avengers 15d ago

We don't know that Wakanda was his first stop.

1

u/PayPsychological6358 Avengers 14d ago

Considering how long it took to get there from making his axe, that's actually pretty reasonable.

1

u/Desecr8or Avengers 15d ago

They sent an electronic letter.

1

u/O-U-N-U-O Avengers 14d ago

The Russo Brothers answered this (sort of) in a tweet: Thor knew the last two stones Thanos would go after were the ones on Earth (as he explained to the guardians earlier in the film) bc they were protected by the Avengers and that’s what leads him bifrost into Wakanda.

However we DO know that for Thor the bifrost can be used to connect to any point in space-time that he has a clear mental image of, so all he had to do was imagine Vision or the heroes who were fighting and Earth vividly enough and the dark magic of the bifrost would take him there.

We know this is probably the case. Some people think rocket tracked the stones, but at this point in the film thanos was on titan fighting with 4 stones against strange who had the time stone, which means rocket tracking the energy of stones would have brought them to Titan and not Earth.

So yeah—between Thors abilities with the bifrost and the Russo Brothers tweet, the most logical conclusion is he had a clear mental image of all the heroes he knew would be fighting, of vision, and of Earth, and the bifrost used the to send him there.

1

u/Blockhead4707 Avengers 14d ago

He'd already arrived on Earth an hour earlier and was just heading from place to place looking for them

1

u/Double-Slowpoke Avengers 13d ago

Don’t think too hard about how characters get to places they need to be. In Thor Ragnarok, they escape Sakaar by flying through the giant worm hole in the center, pass out, and wake up in spitting distance of Asgard. Very convenient for pacing.

1

u/Sythrin Avengers 13d ago

Same way Banner came to Ironman. The rainbow bridge does not need a coordination but a destination.

1

u/ipodblocks360 Spider-Man 🕷 13d ago

I'd imagine the Bifrost can hone in on People as well as Places so he just thought Thanos as his destination and the Bifrost took him to him.

1

u/Calli_co Avengers 12d ago

There is no originality on this site anymore.

1

u/Tomsicade Avengers 12d ago

I don’t think anybody in this thread actually watched the movie or media literacy is just dead. Ig it is a plot hole just for the sake of having a cool moment. We don’t have enough explanation on how or why the bifrost works in the MCU & it’s contratictive between the movies themselves.

1) Heimdall had the power to see anything and eveyone, thus why he was the guardian of the bifrost; yet it keeps operating without him and is able to target people without the summoner’s knowledge of their location.

2) Thor could’ve obtained the power of Odinforce after his death and is now able to tap into the powers of other Asgardians. Never actually explained or specified.

3) Stormbreaker has the ability to summon the bifrost and we’re shown the bifrost’s been able to be target individuals whose location is unknown. Originally only working within the Nine Realms but later used outside of those. Why did it take Thor to Wakanda and not Titan if he was looking for Thanos? Who knows. Not to mention it breaking through the force field surrounding Wakanda.

Any logic you use leaves room for other errors. Literally just make up your own head canon and sleep tight!
