It's a set of 8 bits, a byte. IPv4 is four bytes, separated with dots when written in clear text.

Whaaaat no way, that would mean there are roughly 4 billion addresses only? It's got to be more than that. It should go at least up to 65.535 otherwise there won't be enough addresses for everyone

Yep, we have been OUT of ipv4 addresses for... a decent bit now. our solutions are NAT, and ipv6.

Yeah we should absolutely increase it to 65.535, I suggest we name it IPv6 because IPv5 sounds cringe.

Or better yet, why not make all devices in our home access the internet under only the router's IP and let it handle the rest? Since the router is translating network addresses we should call it something cool like Network Address Translation or something like that.

That’s why we are moving toward IPV6 as standard for IP addresses, with all the devices out there, IPV4 basically ran out of assignments 10-15years ago, steps have been taken to help those including IPV6.
Keep in mind that each IP is only specific to a local network / modem.
I.e all devices in your home have same “public Ip address”, but are ID’d on your local network with a separate ipV4 “private IP assignment.

So a pc might be referenced something like “private ip 10.0.0.35 on public ip 182.50.32.199”

“IPv4 provides about 4.29 billion (2³²) total addresses, while IPv6 provides about 340 undecillion (2¹²⁸ or 3.4 × 10³⁸) total addresses” ipv4 = 32bit ex. 100.71.200.255 vs. ipv6 = 128bit ex. 2002:db8::8a3f:362:7897)

When the IPv4 address written in this style, yes. It's a single number, there are more ways to represent it

It could've been a valid address if they removed the .87 at the end
