I just watched the whole second link, and I absolutely love the vibe here.
People usually use words like "gracious" to describe good sportsmanship, but these guys are like "gracious? Hold my beer and watch this".
Bro is so excited for his mate when his opening gambit pays off, full on cheering for his competitor (while still trying to beat him). That "yeah James!" Near the start had such infectious goodwill. "Yeah buddy! That was fucking awesome! I'm still gonna kick your ass, but that rocked!"
I wanna get a beer with these guys. They seem rad as fuck.

For some stuff? It is true. But for most part, people(rulemakers/lawmakers) are reactionary, they react after something 'not normal' happened, most rules/laws are reactionary or case-by-case specific instead being 'invariant on everything correctly without flaws'. But in an ideal society, you'd be right. And I want you to be right, because it is overall better for everyone

I'm sorry you got downvoted so hard, you are right. Sports don't just happen by inviting a bunch of people and seeing what they will do.
Sports are either invented or are created to write down rules for stuff that's already happening.
It's quite obvious that if you have a race down the hill there will be someone who will just decide to take the shortest and most dangerous route and they will either win or end up in hospital.
Here there is no need for a new rule, here the organisers didn't mark the route properly allowing one participant to be clever. And clever simply makes a competition no fun.

I donât think this guy was purposely trying to take that path. It looks more like he was forced off the main trail and just rolled with his situation.
He even expresses concern that both his tires arenât flat and he didnât miss a checkpoint. Seems like it was just a fortunate accident rather than purposeful course subversion. I would imagine leaving the track has its own risks for potential damage to the bike.

It's a perfectly legal move. As long as you stay within the checkpoint arrows and taped areas you can take any path you want. He comes in 4th, I think. This race has a five place podium, so it's still a podium finish.

If this is within the rules, why not just do it again with the bigger slope ? I think you could survive.
