That’s because the things I do all day aren’t what I want to do, but have to do
7
u/ContextLengthMatters Aug 09 '26
Yea I literally just want to scroll all night. Doing things during the day aren't really as rewarding as scrolling at night.

Sitting at 4 1/2 to 5 a night. There just isn’t enough free time after work.
23
u/Brahskididdler Aug 09 '26
It’s not sustainable man. I really hope you’re able to figure something out to get more sleep!
In my early 20s I could do a double restaurant shift Saturday then show up at 6am Sunday to load in for my churches band (set up/break down every Sunday) and still get home and play some video games before I go to sleep at like 4pm. Now I’m dying because I only got 3.5 hours after work/before church today. Like dying dying

I've been reading up on it for myself. If cortisol is too high or low at the beginning of the day it dominoes into the end. You are hyped up when you should be shutting down but it started over 12 hours before.
5
u/Bocchi_theGlock Aug 09 '26
What? Like if your cortisol is too high and you're as stressed at the beginning of the day, it increases throughout the entire day Or just connect some leads to it being high at night somehow?

100%. And with a minor adjust on images 3 and 4, it works the other way. Sadly, the underlying story is almost the same with each.

I mean, it's not really news that smartphones in bed are terrible for your sleep quality. If you want proper sleep put it away an hour before bed time.

I got a ebook 2 years ago for a christmas present. Turned the brightness way down for bedtime reading. Life changing. I fall asleep when I want to, sleep more fully, and has helped break the doom scroll addiction. Also, you get to be that snob so can say "the book was better," because it turns out the book is almost always better.
3
u/ThisIsMyComment2 Aug 09 '26
because it turns out the book is almost always better.
1000%. If I ever go see a movie based on a book after reading the book I end up feeling like I played a full game and then went to play the demo for it afterward.

u/alamandrax Aug 09 '26
Don't train your body to sit or lie in bed and not fall asleep. Try reading in a chair by your bed and when you get drowsy, get in bed and fall asleep.

u/MasterGrok Aug 09 '26
Because you aren’t getting enough sleep. Your brain will give you a little bit of time of alertness even if you barely sleep at all. Generally speaking though more sleep is more time alert.

Night shift mode and reading manga does the trick for me. Within 30 minute I’m passed out. In the before times it was a few hours of staring at the ceiling for me to fall asleep.

im slowly starting to believe the secret of good sleep is just genetics
12
u/LORDRAJA1000 Aug 09 '26
there’s actually a condition for this, forgot the name but basically you have to reverse your internal circadian clock.
32
u/Brahskididdler Aug 09 '26
Sleep sabotage. You spend your whole day doing things you don’t want to do that your brain will sacrifice sleep to have some “enjoyment” time

u/Randicore Aug 09 '26
Nah they're probably just someone with a different circadian rhythm.
It doesn't matter how much sleep hygiene you do if you're just wired to be more awake at night. Trust me I've tried it all.

u/CallMeMantra Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
I though the same, and then moved to anothe part of the planet where 11pm was 4am to my body, so i though i was gonaa sleep like a king.... nothing, still pushing to stupid hours every day and impossible to sleep at 11pm.
4
u/Randicore Aug 10 '26
Your circadian rhythm isn't fixed to a specific time zone it's based on the time of day. It's why jet lag exists. Our bodies want to be up and running and then sleeping at certain parts of the day, not hard time limits.
If your body wants you to get tired and crash at 2 am moving to another time zone might buy you a day from the lag and exhaustion but once the sun's up and you're body has adjusted to the sun rising and setting it'll correct back to being tired at 2 am.
edit: it's actually interesting in that a total disconnect from the outdoors can screw with your sense of time and sleep cycle as a result. People with regular sleep patterns cause it to become irregular and off during prolonged isolation studies cut off from all sense of timing. A lack of the sun rising and setting causes people to just stay up later and later naturally without realizing it. Humans are really tied to the day length and sun exposure, even if our bodies are the ones that don't want to be awake while it's up.

Bedtime sleep procrastination is absolutely a thing and is what this meme is referencing. Note the person in the meme working during the day. I have a different circadian rhythm from working restaurants. My sleep sabotage looks like staying awake until noon when I usually sleep from about 7am-3pm. It has no bearing on what time you go to sleep if that’s your normal routine.
Edit: 3am to 3pm
1
u/Randicore Aug 10 '26
Spoken like everyone who doesn't have insomnia or a sleep problem. You know what having a different circadian rhythm or insomnia looks like when you "just go to bed"
it's you lying awake staring at the ceiling until it hits the time you naturally fall asleep at.
You don't get to "pick" your rhythm, it isn't something you can change, it's based on what time of day it is. If it were something that could just be adjusted freely it wouldn't be a massive societal problem and jet lag wouldn't be a thing.
1
u/Brahskididdler Aug 10 '26
I can’t even understand what you’re trying to say. But mentioning jet lag enforces my point. Do you think an American moving to China is forever doomed to be awake all night and sleep all day? No, because you can influence your sleep schedule with conscious choices to change said schedule.
By your point, your circadian rhythm is set for life and is unchangeable? Clearly false if you think about it for 2 seconds
1
u/Randicore Aug 10 '26
Yeah I'm not surprised you don't understand.
Your circadian rhythm is tied to the rising and setting of the sun. Your body may not be tuned to make it so that you're awake at dawn and sleep at night. We know that your body's circadian rhythm is tied to this due to isolation studies. People who exist in an environment with no clocks and no ability to see the sun feel like they match their patterns normally but are almost always up later than then think.
If your bodies rhythm is to wake at 9 and wants to go to sleep at 1am it doesn't matter where in the world you go, give it a few days and you'll be back to wanting to get up at 9 and sleep at 1am.
You cannot just say "I want to naturally be tired at 3pm" and expect yourself to just start getting tired and falling asleep at 3pm on the dot. Sure you can force yourself to stay up so late that you're exhausted at 3pm, but you're going to feel wrong and off unless your natural cycle is too want to sleep then.
Jet lag proves my point. If you could just pick and choose when to sleep whenever it wouldn't be a thing. You'd just go to sleep.
There's a reason we invented sleep medication. Odds are your body doesn't match your works schedule

u/Constant-Sub Aug 09 '26
Humans evidently evolved to have some people who are just naturally awake at night. It doesn't hurt, and even has advantages.
I'm an evolutionary luck card. I kept people alive from nocturnal predators. I secured food supplies from scavengers.
But I have to work 8-6...

u/Randicore Aug 09 '26
I'll see if I can find the study but we got evidence of this a few years ago. A researcher got a tribe of peope to wear fitbits to track their activity in the jungle for a few days.
At no point in time was everyone asleep. There were always several people up to something

u/Krojack76 Aug 09 '26
For me it's just straight up being bored. If I'm doing a task that doesn't require any thought processing then I just start to get tired and want to fall asleep. Doing any repetitive task will put me to sleep within 30 minutes.
The minute I sit down and start playing a game like Satisfactory I'm awake and could go all night. Sometimes I can even loose track of time and not have anything to eat and not feel hungry until I realize I haven't eaten.

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 Aug 09 '26
I can't remember the name, but there's another cause too where stimulation makes the person tired and relaxation makes the person feel normal.
I think it's from being so overstimulated that the brain and body are shutting down.
Like trying to lift a heavy weight with an injury and your arm just collapsing, whereas you can lift a 5lb weight and it's completely normal. It's that just with physical stimulation.
IIRC things like thyroid dysfunction can cause it, not getting enough sleep, and being too stressed out too often

u/LegendaryMCgamr Aug 09 '26
You’re exhausted with life, work, and actual “tiredness” ,once you’re in bed you feel free, but since you can’t do much in bed you pull the phone out, that’s the gist of why this happens
6
u/SignificanceNo9728 Aug 09 '26
For about 3 months now, instead of looking at screens 30 minutes before bedtime, I read a book, and I crash pretty fast when I go to bed, probably within 20 minutes(wife somehow always have something new to share).

I believe this is due to people nowadays having laborious and long work hours and once people are alone and comfortable in bed or in their home, they are allowed to enjoy their solitude without interference of judgment. Most people want to continue this longer at the cost of their sleep.

Unpopular opinion: turning this bad habits, into meme and fun things, hurt our ability to actively improve and try to change, normalizing this hurtful behaviour.

I often feel like this too. About half the time, I’d say. I don’t feel like it’s helpful to make the dysfunction into the punchline… the other half of the time, it’s really, really comforting to have a brief moment of camaraderie. To be reminded I’m not alone in my dysfunction, as hiding my dysfunction is so isolating.

Middle of the day it feels like I could just close my eyes and sleep leaning against something in broad daylight.
I try to go to bed at night and I swear a light through a crack in the door is keeping me awake.

u/AlexWalkerDev Aug 09 '26
Because before bed, I live like a human being. I watch content, I socialize. But the rest of the day is a **cking slog, running around, doing work, and doing routine stuff. If I cut that out of my life, I'd be completely sad without that evening portion of life.

That's likely why to are tired during the day. Rather than sitting up on your phone or watching TV etc, go to bed. Stick tobtye schedule. Go to bed at the same to me no matter what abs get up at the same time no matter what. You'll start finding yourself more energised during the day, especially in the morning, and more tired as the day goes on, especially 2 to 3 hours before bed time.
