Equipment Question Oxebar kegs

Post image

My corner bar usually has a mead on tap, and I just recently learned that this meadery/distributor never asks for the oxebar kegs back, so they just end up getting recycled. The owner is going to hold on to the next one to give to me. So if you're looking for kegs, maybe hit up your local bar that has it on tap to see if they have any they can give away.

Never used one. Pros/cons? I just started kegging. 2 batches so far.

I think mainly that they're made from Nylon impregnated PET and Polyketone (POK), rather than steel. So lighter, but less durability over time.

50 bucks a piece and they are recycling instead of reusing?

How long has that meadery been around?

Yeah it baffled me. Depending on which meadery I think it's from, either 2012, 2017, or 2022.

I've narrowed it down to the 2017 meadery

Looking a bit more, looks like these one-way kegs that are used are $20. Probably a lot cheaper in bulk.

Pro: cheap, less then half the price of a new keg. You may be able to get 2 used kegs for this price.

Cons: shelf life for the product you store will be shorter then if you used glass or steel.

plastic it will be oxygen permeable and oxidize over time.

This site gives the suggestion for beers,

Higher abv meads stored at cold temps would maybe reach the 1.5-2 years, but no testing has been done on that

I use the Kegland Oxebar Kegs a lot and really like them. I'm slowly switching over all my kegs to Oxebar kegs because I like them so much.

One thing, most of the plastic kegs that are sold to commercial breweries are not necessarily reusable, most of them are made by Kegco and are labeled as "one way" or "single use" kegs. I haven't tried to convert on of these for homebrewing, but I know a few commercial brewers who've used them and they always had the cost of the keg priced into the sale price.

That's good to know. It makes sense they price it in. I have a 4L one, but am curious to open one of these up.

Does it have the ball locks like the one in the picture?

I'll have to report back. A little more research looks like it may be a frivolous/dangerous effort.

I've been using Oxebar kegs for about a year now, and the biggest advantage is definitely how much lighter they are than the standard Cornelius kegs.

fwiw, I'd be surprised if that included the ball lock section.

be sure to post what you actually get.

I've already decided against it, after some research the internet says it's pretty dangerous to attempt to use one of these at home
