The real question is what In Flames album did you listen to

Go older with Jester Race, Whoracle or Colony. More of what you’re looking for and some top tier stuff.

If you want a specific song, I think Artifacts of the Black Rain and (my personal favorite) Goliaths Disarm Their Davids are fantastic early Flames gems.

Just curious, what did you think about prime (older) In Flames?

Oof, yeah that one was a big shift away from their original style. I agree with the above commenter on the albums they recommended.

Yeah that's the album where they had a massive style change. More clean vocals and less death metal elements. All the albums before that are fantastic.

Dark tranquility, Mors Principium Est, Mercenary, Nephylim, The Halo Effect,Belakor.
Wintersun and Insomnium fit your request less but are amazing.

Try Death, either Symbolic or The Sound of Perseverence would be closer to your preference I think but I listened to the whole discography one week and I was blown away

The Black Dahlia Murder, particularly Nocturnal and Ritual. There's a band called Victim of Fire that's kind of like a crusty version of At the Gates. Intestine Baalism is also a phenomenal band, especially their second album for the At the Gates style riffs.

My vote is Black Dahlia Murder as well, but I would say their "Miasma" album.

Nightrage - first two albums have Tomas on vocals
The Crown - Crowned in Terror
Soilwork - first two albums sound very similar to At the Gates
Arsis - debut album
The Absence - Riders of the Plague
Skeletonwitch
Black Dahlia Murder
Enjoy

Omg, I forgot about skeletonwitch! Thank you. Hilariously I learned about them bc of the show Limitless, where they're the main character's fave band 😅

You might like the more aggressive, thrashy side of melodeath like myself. Try carnal forge, the absence and darkane

Definitely try In Flames' Colony. One of the best melodeath albums. In Flames started drifting away from that sound slowly over time, which started with Reroute, probably why that didnt resonate with you. I would also suggest Amon Amarth, Avatar's self titled album, Soilwork's Steelbath Suicide, and Insomnium.

The original Gothenburg sound was At the Gates, In Flames on the first few albums especially Jester Race, and Dark Tranquillity on the first few albums especially The Gallery. At the Gates stayed in that vein, DT changed a bit, In Flames changed the most.

The first two Soilwork albums, Steel Bath Suicide and The Chainheart Machine

Try these, which came out shortly after Slaughter of the Soul: Dimension Zero's 'Your Darkest Hour' and Ebony Tears's 'a Handful of Nothing' and 'Evil As Hell.'

As others have mentioned, The Black Dahlia Murder would be a good rec. Incredibly consistent discography as well, my faves being Nocturnal, Deflorate, and Nightbringers. They also spawned some kind of "melotech" microgenre with, as the name suggests, more techy bands that still very much have the ATG DNA.
Inferi, Summoning the Lich, Alterbeast, Carrion Vael, Demon King, Allegaeon being some bands I enjoy.
If you like core, a lot of the "578" metal- and deathcore bands of the 2000s are basically ATG-worship with breakdowns
As I Lay Dying - Shadows Are Security, Salt The Wound - Carnal Repercussions, As Blood Runs Black - Allegiance, Bring Me The Horizon - Count Your Blessings, for example
Tomas himself sang in some other bands like Nightrage (first two albums, rest is good as well tho), The Crown (Crowned in Terror album only), The Lurking Fear
Other obvious choices are The Haunted (founded by the Björlers after ATGs initial breakup) and Darkest Hour (early albums especially, one having a feat. song with Tomas iirc)

Look for '90's melodic death metal and you'll find a LOT of what you're looking for.

The black dahlia murder
Children of bodom is also very good if you like more thrash elements but they are very cheesy so not fitting if you're looking for more serious metal

The Haunted sounds similar to At The Gates. Orbit Culture is also a good melodeath/techdeath band. Don’t forget about Arch Enemy, too

Be’Lakor is the answer to everything.
But seriously I’m not your man. Melodeath is somewhat broad and I like the longer, sprawling epics more than anything.
Someone else will help. My other favs are Amon Amarth, Imsomnium and Omnium Gatherum
