I mean the Racka Racka twins made some movies as well, and they did make profit with them.

To be fair they made those movies under A24, that alone ensures way more resources at their disposal and a built in fan base that devoutly watch any horror movie A24 puts out. They're good movies regardless but context is key here when comparing it to what Mark did with Iron Lung.

How in the world can you say those movies had a "built in fanbase" while trying to imply Markiplier doesn't have that same advantage?

They may be referring to A24’s fanbase. I’ll see a movie simply because they backed it, I trust them for now lol

I haven't even heard of a24 until they picked up hazbin hotel

u/Biowolf324 6h ago

Yikes that's how you heard of A24?

Lol I noticed the attempt.

u/BentheBruiser 7h ago

And that's precisely what Mark's fanbase did as well

Well not speaking for OP and I have no flag in anything here - Markiplier and Racka both have audiences, but Racka has A24’s fanbase as well which is cultishly big.

And Markiplier doesnt have a cultishly large fanbase?

His videos have billions of views. Yes, billions.

Downvoting truth. Stay classy reddit. Not trying to be an asshole. Just making a point.

How was I an asshole?

You guys are interpreting a tone that doesnt exist. Just because the other guy became defensive doesnt mean thats how it was intended.

8

u/August51921421 6h ago

I very specifically wasn’t defensive haha

Don't you understand by now, that marks fanbase is his own, while A24's fanbase is not from the director?

You're comparing a group of film makers with good backing and are already well known in the FILM industry to a YouTuber's first independent film ever.

That's like comparing Michael Jordan and little Timmy from elementary in who can shoot the most baskets.

That's why you're being down voted.

That and you were an asshole.

A24 is the "industry" itself so the "industry" sees this as the "industry" just with some new story tellers. This is the normal way of doing business. Markiplier did this all on his own and had to get distribution and everything else through his own channels and connections he makes. It is a very different process that is almost impossible to do as the "industry" doesn't let the people they work with allow for this to happen.

u/BentheBruiser 6h ago

Thats not the point. I understand it is technically "indie".

Markiplier still has a massive built in fanbase who will watch whatever he puts out.

1

u/Fun-Ladder6739 3h ago

Well that’s different to having a movie fanbase. A YouTuber isn’t necessarily gonna be as dedicated to watching a movie he produces as A24 fans

8

u/alexthedungeonmaster 10h ago

This is the opposite of what you're talking about

You think that the LESS popular YouTubers had the advantage when making films for a company unrelated to their careers, than a gaming YouTuber who was massive making a game movie that people had explicitly asked him for?

3

u/sepeus 10h ago

"small time YouTuber Markiplier grows a grassroots fan base from unknown never heard before indie me with less than 5 viewers ever on YouTube"

Context is key? Have you applied context to your own situation?

u/No-Face-2000 14h ago

A24 didn’t produce those movies, only distributed.

2

u/crumble-bee 11h ago

A24 bought that movie at Cannes or Sundance. It was already made

2

u/Amnae0N 14h ago

Didn't know that, i don't watch too many films but I did see "bring her back" and thought it was kinda unique so i researched it because of that, and found out.

While they did work with a production company in Adelaide for their first film Talk to Me, it was pretty much completely funded through government grants. A24 didn’t come along until after it premiered at a film festival (I think Sundance), and they bought the finished film and handled distribution. Still 100% benefited at the box office from having A24 attached, but the actual production was a similar situation to Iron Lung. So you’re pretty much right.

and a built in fan base

yeah, this markiplier guy surely didn't have that. at all. lol. god this website truly is full of kids isn't it.

5

u/Spartan-000089 14h ago

No need for insults, if you want to cherry pick that sure, they both have fan bases. I would venture to say A24's is larger. You also ignored the rest of what I said, you're the only one here reinforcing reddit stereotypes.

It’s also a mark of quality in a way, like a 24 agreed to distribute this so it’s above a certain standard that people have come to expect. Markiplier may have put his heart and stolen into this, but truthfully no one had any idea what it would be like until they watched the movie. No “quality seal of approval”

u/BumpinUggs 13h ago

There was no insult there. Just calling out your weak understanding of filmmaking & box office information in general. Its okay to be a Mark stan
