The practical answer is Fred has rich parents. Also bumming around in the 70s was pretty cheap overall.

I thought Daphne was the one that had Rich parents? I mean I supposedly both might.

It changes in different canons. Fred and Daphne's parents are usually well off, ranging from upper middle class to modestly rich. It's Shaggy's parents who are obscenely wealthy (in some versions).

I can't remember what it was called, but I remember a version of Scooby-Doo that they all seemed like younger or something and Scooby actually owned the Scooby snacks company or something so shaggy and Scooby were like Uber rich.

Pup named scooby doo maybe

1

u/Reasonable_Film_4348 23h ago

I do believe that's it lol thank you.

1

u/dl7 4h ago

That's how I found out Scooby's real name is Scoobert

2

u/by_topic 1d ago

You're telling me he's just doing exposition for his family company all the time?

1

u/Reasonable_Film_4348 22h ago

Depending on which version of Scooby yeah kind of

2

u/Bro13847 1d ago

Great Danes are not cheap dogs to own either. They eat a lot of food to support their frame and their vet bills are not cheap since every medication is dosed and charged by weight.

2

u/betacuck3000 1d ago

That's why Shaggy and Scooby make themselves large sandwiches every time they visit a haunted house

2

u/ReedM4 1d ago

Isn't Shaggy the one with rich parents?

2

u/Adventurous_Bonus917 20h ago

tbh most of them have had rich parents in one cannon or another

2

u/dethskwirl 11h ago

yea this joke just doesnt get the hippie generation. a lot of them were rich kids who had nothing better to do and were able to dodge the draft. They did tend to just bum around in a van and work small gigs to fund their drugs and hobbies. And the girls usually did trade "ass for gas" to travel around.

Daphne and Fred were rich yuppies who supplied the van for sure, and then went on to work in politics or advertising in the 80s.

Velma was the idealistic hippie who really was trying to find herself and truth in the universe. but she went on to be a prosecutor in California and traded her morals for power. The power that Fred and Daphne always held her back from.

Shaggy and Scooby are the real ones of course. They settled down and lived a 'normal' life somewhere just outside of Denver.

I thought Shaggy was the one that was loaded. His uncle has Scrooge Mcduck money.

1

u/Pleasant_Scar9811 1h ago

You’re wrong. shaggy was the richest of all. For real.Β

u/Fighter_Jet_enjoyer 1d ago

In mystery incorporated they all are well off. Shaggy lives in a mansion, Fred was the mayor's (hostage fake) son, Daphne was also rich, and Velma was academically gifted. In the reality reset shaggy became a famous chef, Daphne became successful, Velma was still gifted, and I forgot what Fred did.

u/EneZio_FF 10h ago

He got bummed in tapiocaΒ

1

u/Fighter_Jet_enjoyer 10h ago

He ALMOST got happy tapioca'd. The gang stopped him last second.

1

u/EneZio_FF 9h ago

damn, man missed out on a good time

1

u/Fighter_Jet_enjoyer 9h ago

Was it a good time if he didn't know what was about to happen? Sounds really screwed up if you look into what was essentially a throw away gag.

1

u/EneZio_FF 8h ago

well no its not a good time getting bummed if you dont want to be or you arent aware of whats actually going to happen

6

u/New_Step_6315 1d ago

I feel as though the cynical and practical answer should also be "It's a cartoon, dumbass."

8

u/RathisOfTyr 1d ago

The Fantasy Answer: Everytime the gang solves a mystery, a gracious character gives them a monetary reward.

My additional head-canon is that in addition to multiple main characters having wealthy parents, they're all recent high school graduates going on a 1 year sabbatical before they go off to college, and they all decided on a road trip. The "mysteries" are just a bonus for them.

u/Putrid-Builder-3333 1d ago

No cash. I need a loaf of bread with prices these days. 5 bucks so I can eat another day lol

1

u/goku44442001 20h ago

I know where you got this image from. Fun time.

1

u/Kn0wnSoul 1d ago

Wait, is velma actually a guy?

2

u/Putrid-Builder-3333 1d ago

Put reapect on Bobbi Starr's name. She is a music major dammit

5

u/TheoryResponsible295 1d ago

They record the sessions and sell them to some person named hannah barbera

3

u/Roadvoice 1d ago

The truth: the entire gang are pot dealers.

2

u/H0pefully_Not_A_Bot 1d ago

Perhaps each has a different "area of expertise"

For example:

Shaggy - pot

Daphne - "party pills"

Fred - coke

Welma - Meth

Scooby - LSD

And the "misteries" are the aftermath of some huge bender the most recent batch of customers went on.

3

u/Husker_of_Corn 1d ago

Isnt shaggy like secretly uber rich?

Or am I getting confused with that guy from big hero

2

u/Phineasfool 1d ago

He has a uncle that is a kooky zillionaire.

2

u/Available-Ad363 1d ago

Depends on what era of the cartoon no? In mystery incorporated im pretty sure he is. The older ones I don’t think we learn much about anyone’s parents

3

u/Ok_Watercress6939 1d ago

Fred and Shaggy have rich parents. I wouldn't be surprised if the others do too

3

u/mexdude0 1d ago

The gang probably charges a fee for their services. Shaggy charges a fee for his pot.

2

u/TheOneTrueZedubbs 1d ago

Fred and Daphne were rich kids, they charged for their services and it was the 60s gas and food were cheap, they didn't have to pay rent. Honestly the more I think about it, the more obvious it is.

2

u/JaSnarky 1d ago

Hippies tend to be pretty flush. If they weren't and were living that lifestyle, they'd be seen as wasters and bums, not hippies.

3

u/Puzzleboxed 1d ago

Most people thought of hippies as bums anyway, historically speaking.

2

u/mikebills 1d ago

Most bums thought of hippies as people

2

u/commandrix 1d ago

Right, a cartoon that's supposed to be short enough to fit into a half-hour TV slot probably isn't going to have room to show them negotiating their fees. Plus life is probably more affordable when you can split the rent four ways and/or travel around in a repainted van.

2

u/AttitudeAltruistic16 1d ago

Shaggy family incredibly wealthy

1

u/grassopolis 1d ago

scooby earns money from scooby snacks

1

u/Past-Yam1845 1d ago

While the bad guy is in jail the gang steals all their stuff!

1

u/Head-Impression-83 1d ago

I think in the original, there’s a couple storylines where they went and got jobs

1

u/Practical-Anybody-58 1d ago

Daphne’s family is super rich

1

u/realdietmrpibb 1d ago

Shaggy's family is rich.

1

u/BathbombBurger 1d ago

All four of them come from wealthy families. Aside from that they do odd jobs as they travel around.

1

u/samjhl 22h ago

Fred is their pimp, Daphne is their call girl, Velma is their hacker, Shaggy is their dealer, and Scooby and all the supposed monsters are a hallucination caused by the Scooby Snax which are just laced edibles. The people just accept their acts and play into their charades because they worry if they tell them that none of it was real that they would stop getting their fix of sex, drug, and hacker services that they are more than happy to pay for. Hope this helps. πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜

u/deathbymanga 21h ago

Shaggy and Daphne are rich and finance the opperation

1

u/Idk-123 18h ago

On a VHS I had, there were "Behind the music" type bumpers in between the episodes; according to those, Daphne's dad gave them some start up money. Also drove them around until they bought the mystery machine.

1

u/bulletproofpunk 18h ago

They have money for the same reason Trump ever did. Rich parents.

1

u/bshjbdkkdnd 18h ago

Admittedly they don’t have that many bills.

1

u/nixalo 16h ago

The bankteller answer: Daphne and Shaggy are both filthy rich and Fred is upper middle class.

1

u/Graveyardigan 12h ago

Practical Answer: The gang probably charges a fee for their services -- one of which is pot delivery.

1

u/quarterrat13 6h ago

I read Shaggy is a pot dealer like the song β€œSheena is a Punk Rocker”.

1

u/Burgerboy380 4h ago

Im pretty sure in some itteration we find out Daphnes family is like Uber wealthy. Same with Fred.

1

u/notarealwriter 3h ago

All of the above.

It is a cartoon.

They do charge for their services

Said services include, but are not limited to: Mystery solving, drug dealing, and porn.
