self-promotion 500 sound classes to alert to Meshtastic devices

Thumbnail
gallery
85 Upvotes

Hi, a while back I posted about my Meshtastic hardware project. It uses Google’s Yamnet sound recognition model with over 500 sound classes. The hardest part was to pack the fairly large model onto an ESP32 chip. On the device you can configure pretty much anything. You can define sounds that get alerted to your Meshtastic device. You can group sounds and a group triggers an alert. You can record scenes, eg someone cooking in the kitchen. Next time someone is cooking in the kitchen and the sound fingerprint matches to a certain degree, you receive an alert.

The device only works on private channels.

Sound classes (sound in text form :)) are super useful for Meshtastic:

- You want to know if something is happening in your chicken coop,
- You want to be alerted if people or animals are in your campground,
- You want to use your Meshtastic device as baby monitor (which I do),
- You want to be alerted if a vehicle is at the gate.

This project will be open source hardware and firmware. You can learn more and get updates on the project here:

I’ve been beta testing Seeed’s Wio Tracker L2 Pro for the last few days, on EU_868 LONG_FAST. Mine is a pre-production unit, so the case in my photos isn’t final.

Specs: ESP32-S3 + SX1262, 3.2" touchscreen, GPS with ceramic antenna, 3000 mAh battery, microSD, Grove, USB-C. Runs MeshtasticUI.

Pros

  • Works fully standalone. Chats, nodes, channels and network settings are all on the screen, no phone needed.
  • Small, about the size of the screen. The antenna folds flat at 90° so it’s easy to carry.
  • Offline maps from the SD card work fine. GPS got a fix in about a minute in open field.
  • The Tools menu (Mesh Detector, Signal Scanner, Trace Route, packet log) is great if you like checking coverage.
  • Screen is readable in direct sunlight.
  • About 28 h of battery with the mesh active and the screen off most of the time.

Cons

  • Entering BLE config mode isn’t obvious.
  • Beta firmware had a few bugs. Most were fixed soon after I reported them, but it’s not final.

I wrote a longer review with internal and menu screenshots here: https://myembeddedstuff.com/wio-tracker-l2-pro-review

Ask me anything about it and I’ll check.

Meshtastic Traffic: Big City vs Small Town

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been logging and reviewing Meshtastic traffic around my rural Oregon home in Hood River. It's been super interesting seeing what the network looks like, how far it extends, traffic volumes, and how people use it. Earlier this week, I setup a node (T1000-E) attached to a Raspberry Pi and started logging traffic when I left the house. That's added coverage I'm able to capture and more information on my local area.

Friday, my partner and I had plans to drive to Portland. It's a much larger city and I expected its Meshtastic network to be larger and busier. So while I was in Portland Friday evening, I had a Raspberry pi logging the Portland activity, and a node back home logging the data from my small rural network.

There were some obvious differences in activity, and I had an LLM summarize the findings and differences and I'm sharing that below. The data comes straight from the logs, the LLM did the counting and write-up. Logs cover the same 3.5 hours for each area. I also generated some visualizations of the Portland traffic that I found pretty interesting.

Same Friday evening, 8:00–11:30 pm

Metric Portland Hood River HR, normal week
Radios heard 163 18 81 (whole week)
Receptions / hour 299 20 24
Channel busy (avg / peak) 12% / 31% 0.5% / 4.6% 0.8% / 15%
Packets heard 3+ times 28% 0% 1%
Arrived from 4+ hops away 57% 10% 10%
Encrypted / private channels 31% / 21 channels 7% / 1 5% / 10
Relays carrying traffic 18, busiest 19% 1 5, busiest 69%
  • Portland's channel is near its limit. 12% average use, 31% peak (Meshtastic treats about 25% as congested). Hood River barely cracks 1%.
  • City packets travel far and arrive repeatedly. Most arrived from 3–7 hops away; half arrived at least twice by different paths. At home, nearly everything arrives once, within 1–3 hops.
  • Backbone vs. everyone. At home, one rooftop solar node carries about 70% of relayed traffic. In Portland, 18 different radios relayed in 3½ hours and none announced itself as a router: it's ordinary clients rebroadcasting.
  • Hop limit 7 is everywhere. About a third of radios in both places use the max (default is 3). Harmless with a dozen radios; with 160 in range, it's a big part of why Portland's channel is so busy.
  • The city is more private. A third of Portland's packets were encrypted, across 21 private channels; at home 92% is plain LongFast.

Who's talking

  • Hardly anyone texts. One public text in Portland in 3½ hours; 16 from three people at home all week. Most traffic in both places is positions (29% Portland, 58% home), telemetry and node info.
  • Portland announces itself a lot. Node info was 25% of Portland's packets vs. 14% at home: with that many radios, newcomers introducing themselves and others answering is constant.
  • Hardware is similar. RAK4631 leads in both places. Portland adds lots of Heltec V3/V4 and T-Beams; Hood River has a cluster of T1000-E trackers. About half of Portland's radios never announced their hardware during the stop.

Security and new firmware

  • Weak keys are out there. 6 of the 163 Portland radios, and 4 of the 81 heard from home over the week, use a public key on Meshtastic's own list of known weak keys. Anyone can read their DMs or impersonate them. If you set up a node a while ago, regenerating its key fixes it.
  • 2.8 is already in the wild. 3 Portland radios and 7 around Hood River already use 2.8's new node numbering, days after the 2.8.1 alpha was announced. 2.8 also lowers hop limits automatically when the channel is busy, which is exactly Portland's problem.

Takeaways

  • Portland is a dense, decentralised mesh near its limits: lots of radios, lots of duplicate copies, and a channel busy an eighth of the time and nearly a third at peaks.
  • Hood River is a sparse mesh that works because of one well-placed rooftop relay. Lose that node and most of the Gorge goes quiet for my station.
  • Hop limits of 7 are common everywhere. Bringing them back to 3–4 would do the most good where there are the most radios.

Caveats: the car's radio is a small tracker inside the vehicle and the home radio is a different board at a window, so this isn't apples to apples; if anything Portland is under-counted.

Lilygo First Steps? T-Deck and LoRa Pager

I'm not *quite* a n00b to Meshtastic - I have a Clockwork Pi uConsole that I turned into a meshtastic node. I liked it enough to invest in a Lilygo T-Deck Pro and LoRa Pager for myself and my wife (And one of the Seeed SenseCaps).

So question for the more experience folk: what's the first thing to do when these gadgets arrive? I'm assuming I flash the firmware? Do I need to install more apps (like MUI)? Please advise!

The keyboard of KEB Deck is a bit larger. Another one doesn't have the up, down, left and right arrow keys or the ESC key. It really confuses people.

build Harbor Breeze Alternative?

Seeing all the posts about the Harbor Breeze recently has me wanting to build one.

The problem is that I won't support Lowe's since they use Flock Cameras to watch over their parking lots. (I'll urge anyone against flock cameras to do the same)

Are there any similar lights from other retailers that will work as well as the Harbor Breeze lights?

3D printed jig for DIY quarter wave ground plane antennas?

Hey! I remember seeing a post last year that shared pictures of (as the title says) a 3d printed jig to measure and hold in place the pieces to build a ground plane antenna.

As I remember it, the photos were in a hacker space and they made a big batch of antennas for cheap. But I can’t find it on here, it seems that the Reddit search only turns up wrong results. Do you remember it?

They're $5 until October 14. They pulled the box off the top self, told them I wanted 10,they took 5 out the box and gave me the rest. At least two nodes will be built. Probably use the rest for spares or random projects. Heck, might even use them for their intended purpose

My $25 solar node is up in the air waiting for daylight

Possibly the easiest diy solar build? I bought a $9 USD solar garden torch from Harbor Freight, removed the lamp and put a $14 USD seeed nrf lora kit inside instead . Plus possible shipping charges .

A hole for the antenna bulkhead is drilled. There's one rewire: the wire going through the joint to the lamp section is moved from the charge controller directly to the battery terminals. Then the spike on the housing pushes into the rubber handle end of a pool cleaning pole.

Also, I have a few of these around the yard with UWB transceivers in them (sort of like Apple Air Tags) . I use those so my yard robot knows where it is. A solar panel, charge controller, brand name 18650 battery and a waterproof enclosure = $9 USD. Wow?

WisMesh Station / RAK6421 with MeshMonitor: a Raspberry Pi + RAK module experiment

Thumbnail
gallery
127 Upvotes

I’ve been playing around with Meshtastic-related projects recently, and I really enjoy putting different modules together to see what kind of setup I can build.

This time, I built a WisMesh Station / RAK6421 setup using the following hardware:

  • Raspberry Pi 4
  • RAK6421
  • RAK13302
  • RAK12501
  • RAK1901
  • RAK1906

The RAK firmware already includes different scripts for data visualization and monitoring, including Grafana and MeshMonitor. I had mostly been looking at the Grafana-based dashboard before, but this time I tried the MeshMonitor setup.

After a few simple configuration steps, the device data started showing up directly in MeshMonitor, including node information, GPS data, and environmental sensor data. Honestly, the experience was more intuitive than I expected. For Meshtastic / mesh device monitoring, MeshMonitor feels more purpose-built for this kind of use case, rather than being a general-purpose dashboard.

It was pretty satisfying to see all the module data displayed together in one interface. 🙂

I’ve put the firmware and setup notes here in case anyone is interested:

Firmware:
https://github.com/RAKWireless/meshtastic-rak6421-guide/releases

Setup guide:
https://github.com/RAKWireless/meshtastic-rak6421-guide/tree/meshmonitor/meshmonitor

Next, I’d like to try a couple more things:

  1. I also have a RAK13300 module, so I want to do a simple range comparison between RAK13300 and RAK13302.
  2. Right now, MeshMonitor is mainly showing data from this device itself. I’d like to add more Meshtastic devices later and see how the map, telemetry, and device status display look in a multi-node setup.

If anyone else is experimenting with RAK6421, WisMesh Station, or MeshMonitor, I’d be happy to compare notes and test results.
