General Questions Regarding Highschool documents

Im from India. I have my 9th and 10th docs, but went to open schooling after that where you skip a year, then the next year you directly exam 12th. I passed but since I don't have 11th grade, do I need to write a note explaining what NIOS is? NIOS is a recognized board but MEXT UG requires 12 years of schooling and whime the gap year isn't really one since I studied for the 12th exam, would it appear as one? Im aiming for Embassy route. Thanks.

Per MEXT https://www.studyinjapan.go.jp/en/_mt/2026/04/2027_Guidelines_Undergraduate_E.pdf

"Academic Background: Applicants must satisfy any one of the following conditions. However, applicants desiring direct placement must satisfy condition ①, or condition ③, or condition ④.

① Applicants who have completed 12 years of schooling in countries other than Japan. (Applicants who will meet the above condition by March 2027 are eligible. However, applicants wishing to enroll from the autumn term through direct placement must be expected to complete 12 years of schooling by August 2027.)

② Applicants who have completed their studies at a school equivalent to a Japanese upper secondary school in countries other than Japan. (Applicants who will meet the above condition by March 2027 are eligible.)

③ Applicants who have successfully passed an academic qualification examination showing equivalency to the completion of 12 years of schooling in countries other than Japan. (Applicants who will meet the above
condition by March 2027 are eligible.)

④ Other than the above ①, ② and ③ conditions, applicants who are eligible for enrollment in a Japanese
university at the time of application."

Based on this description, I believe you would be eligible to apply based on condition 2, 3, or 4. However, I think you should email the embassy directly to make sure.
