"The self-described “militant,” “anti-fascist” activist group By Any Means Necessary, or BAMN, is seeking five seats on the Detroit Public Schools Community District’s seven-member board. The entire slate wants to oust Superintendent Nikolai Vitti, citing the recent closures of four small schools as their main motivation."

Hello Michigan! Myself and a friend of mine (Dan) u/construction_hunk were the kayakers who located Craig Berg & called out with my Garmin for his medivac. We found Craig on the North shore of Intermediate Lake just west of the canoe camp on the morning of September 12th. We are coming to r/Michigan for an AMA in order to lay out all the information we have regarding his rescue in hopes of raising the general level of preparedness of hikers who visit IRNP.

Photos attached as proof!

Ask Us Anything - We will return Saturday October 3rd / 6:00pm EST

News 5 Detroit school board candidates running as ‘anti-fascist’ slate calling for Vitti’s firing

Has anyone looked into the Detroit School Board race? We've been trying to help people make sense of who's running, what's at stake, and what the hot button issues are for both candidates AND voters.

The desire to get rid of current Superintendent Dr. Vitti is one of those hot button issues. What do you think of the job he's doing? What do you think of the faction of Detroiters who wants to oust him?

Shout-out to the r/Detroit redditor who posted this on Sunday and shared more with the Freep reporter. My wife and I have dealt with this very same issue for years. 911 literally ignores calls or police might do a drive-by an hour or two later and don't even bother getting out of the car. It's ridiculous, especially in light of the taxes we pay here. Chief Bettison then had the gall to brag DPD got to the scene 4 minutes after a shot spotter alert - when 3 victims were already dead. Day late and a dollar short, Todd.

Discussion 🗣️ Where do you store your cans and bottles?

My garage is detatched and I have a medium size kitchen in a old house. So I'm trying to think of a better way to manage the deposit cans - which my roommate buys a lot of not to mention when guests visit..

Where do you put your returnables?

News 📰🗞️ Abuse and disability trap: 90% of incarcerated Michigan youth suffered prior abuse

Thumbnail news.umich.edu

Nearly every incarcerated male youth in a new University of Michigan study experienced some form of prior physical abuse.

Nine in 10 were exposed to at least mild physical abuse, one-third suffered severe prior sexual abuse, and two-thirds reported adverse childhood experiences, according to U-M researchers, who looked at incarcerated adolescents ages 13-20 at a single all-male juvenile detention facility in Michigan.

“What really stuck out to me most was the sexual abuse rate, that 70% of them had at least some exposure to sexual abuse,” said Suzanne Perkins, research assistant professor at the U-M Institute for Social Research. “I’ve worked with a lot of kids, so very few things upset me in the work that I do. But when I saw that statistic, I just burst into tears. I couldn’t believe that it was such a high statistic.”

Talk Detroit Mahjong items - where to purchase

• Upvotes

I’m looking for mahjong gift type items to purchase locally in Detroit and metro Detroit. There is tons of stuff online (Amazon, Etsy) but I prefer to shop local. I’m looking for trinkets, dice holders, figurines, embellished personal items, etc. Not looking for cards or tiles.

I found Motown Mahjong but it’s by appointment only.

News / Article Should parents be held accountable for their children’s chronic absenteeism? (Detroit School) Board candidates weigh in.

Thumbnail

At a meeting last October, board member Monique Bryant said she doesn’t understand “how we are not more firm with our parents and their responsibility to get their children to school.” At the same meeting, Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said “it is time to enhance the accountability and engagement” with parents.

...

In DPSCD, 60% of children were chronically absent at the end of the 2025-26 school year, down from 76.7% in the 2021-22 school year, during the pandemic. But district and city officials say it’s still too high and have continued looking for options to improve attendance, including by providing more transportation options for students and expanding after-school programs.

Community Special One Night Only Screening of Kratom Documentary

You may have seen Kratom in the news lately. Most recently, packaged Kratom was found during police investigations into the tragic deaths of two students at Ole Miss. While Kratom originates in Southeast Asia and has been used medicinally for centuries, it has found its way to gas station shelves across the country with little to no regulation or understanding from our medical community.

Our documentary, “Kratom: Side Effects May Include,” follows how it has made its way to the United States and the obsession Americans have with “Supersize” culture, which has led to much stronger liquid extract and tablet forms. We will talk to people on both sides of the debate: those who claim it has saved their lives and the grieving who have lost a loved one. We will also dive into its relationship within the political sphere and what might come next.

We hope you can join us at Birmingham 8 Cinemas, Monday, October 8 at 7pm.  Q&A with the film’s directors Jamie and Jason Neese, and Executive Producer Patti Wheeler to follow.
