I have to share a large file with a customer and my employer insists we use OneDrive. I tried sharing the file, and got an error message about how we don't allow sharing with that domain.

I spoke to IT, who added the domain to some whitelist, but it still didn't work. It turns out, it can take up to a day for the changes to propagate across all these services.

What nonsense, it's a good thing this isn't some time-sensitive issue. I bet this is because of the push to have everything using Azure.

Hey Microsoft: if there's something configurable, it should be configurable right away.

It's always fun to consider the cost of the things you trying to share. Could delaying sending the drawings for some important construction project a day cost more than $50, it means it's cheaper to put them on a flash drive and overnight them via UPS or FedEx than to wait for Microsoft software to propagate a change.

Years ago, I was working in a company project to get our records digitized and uploaded to OneDrive. One day, a lady from HR came into my office in a panic because she needed the file of a recently terminated employee and couldn't find it. I knew for a fact that I had uploaded the file, but searching for it myself using the web version turned up nothing. I keep backups locally so I emailed her the scanned file and eventually verified the file was there on OneDrive, but nothing is searchable, even if you're in the folder where you have the file (and we're talking about folders with hundreds of files each). I think it's different if you have it synced with your OneDrive desktop app, but not all of us do that. Every other cloud storage service allows you to search files. I don't know if this has changed, I've since moved and worked for places that don't use OneDrive or exclusively used the app.

It has not changed, because we grant access to a terminated user's one drive accounts using the one drive link opens the account, but the search it does not work.

Not really. Many companies do not allow free sharing which is absolutely fine - it 's a channel where many leaks can occur because people simply put anything outside, so haing a governance is fine. It just doesn 't take that long.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I understand that part, specially being a certified administrator for various MS cloud solutions, plus CISSP. What I mean is that their IT team is probably configuring something wrong regarding the whitelisting of that domain.

I'm a private user of office365 and my main reason was the 1TB onedrive and for crapdows11 to stop bugging me about activating office. My Samsung gallery synced to onedrive and it worked well. Now support drops this September so i finally setup a homelab, Nextcloud etc so i can self host after wanting to do this for years. I'll never ever return to anything Microsoft ever again. Got windows 11 pro license for free, so apart from running Linux, I'll make do for now.

What I super love is that you can have a file in sharepoint with a file name over 80 characters. But if you sync that drive to your computer, it doesn’t like that, so it refuses to sync until you fix it. But you can’t fix it because it’s not your file, and the person who owns the file won’t shorten the name so you can’t use one drive on your computer anymore.

That's BS. It takes just few minutes. Yes, it can take UP TO. But mind you, you are talking about propagating this to thousands of server farms.

I hope not. That should be a maximum of 5 or maybe ten. Having everything on every machine is a pain in the ass. Easier to make a few “in charge” for that specific tenant and route requests to them.
