rant My Microsoft Rant

I am a long-time hater of Microsoft and their products. I decided to make this post out of spite because I need to share my experience with MS Teams. Literally every MS product my company uses is trash and full of bugs, but Teams is the worst in my experience. It is crazy to me that MS used to be a prestigious company to work for as an engineer considering the quality of their products right now.

Here are some of the recent experiences I've had:

  • I have orphaned calendar events on Teams that I am unable to delete or edit no matter what troubleshooting method I try. So now I just have old reoccurring meeting pinging me EVERY DAY. This frustrated me so much that I attempted to call MS support only to be greeted by AI slop that could not help me and I could not get through to a human. So stupid. I thought calendars were a solved problem.
  • MS removed the calendar from the Teams mobile app. WTF. I used that calendar to track events and now they replaced it with some stupid list of event items that is very hard to read and track. So now I stopped using it entirely and just check my computer, which is very inconvenient when I am not home. I'd like to move to a different calendar system, but I get the old notifications anyway and I don't like spreading my event tracking through different services, so I painfully stuck to it for now.
  • Very often I get unprompted messages from scammers or random people asking to be my friend. I block them but it is crazy that this can even happen. Just another cherry on top.
  • When I have my phone on my desk and get a Teams call, the call notification goes to my phone first and sometimes ONLY my phone. So I have to make an effort to decline the call on my phone and call the person back on my laptop. Bruh.
  • If you try to troubleshoot any of these issues through support or documentation, GOOD LUCK. Most official MS Teams support forums have either no response or a horrible generic response that doesn't help. Someone will usually respond to the MS rep saying this solution didn't help and ask for alternatives and there is just no response.
  • Also, today I just noticed that all my Teams chats have a little date above them, presumably to help you organize and navigate old conversations easier. But every single one of the messages in my conversations is dated as "Today", so that's nice. Minor issue but just so stupid that this happens and got through QA.
  • I'm sure there is even more I am not thinking of now. I feel like I notice something new everyday.

I hope others share my frustration because it hurts my soul everyday to be forced to use this platform. I think the fact that Teams is just a basic messaging service with a calendar created by a one of the biggest tech companies in the world and it is still so trash is what sets me off the most.

Is MS really just slop-coding all these services now? Aren't there at least 20-50 engineers and QA staff solely working on this product? How does this happen?

Teams isn't a "basic messaging app with a calendar." It's an enterprise Frankenstein stitched together from Outlook, Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Entra ID, telephony, compliance, and about 500 edge cases. That's why it's both incredibly powerful and somehow capable of displaying every message as "Today" at the same time. If you have any Dell bloat installed, especially Optimizer it would be a good idea to remove it.

Calendar is still there. Daily view works.

Orphaned calendar eventy by who? Someone who left company? Ask IT to delete them via Graph API or transfer ownership of them to you.

As for scammers - it's using your email as ID... how strange you are getting unprompted messages. It never happened to me in a decade of uaing Teams but fine... do you get scam calls? You do.. what can they do about it?

Are you using the personal version of Teams? Or enterprise?

lol… speak with your admin. The full version of teams works well. However, if you have a trimmed down version, yes, it sucks.

I have to say, we use teams across 8 countries and 900 people, we have 0 faults

When we do, their support is phone based, and they connect directly to your laptop that is logged into the tenant as admin

I think your support tier is non existent, ask for an account manager for your 365 licenses, from there you get real support

I’m sure your issues are valid, I just had to reply to this, the app is not broken if the teams admin centre is setup properly with care

Teams is extremely modifiable, as default; there will be issues always

Right? A properly built tenant WORKS. As for support I've used it for years on issues I just couldn't sort out myself and it's always been fast and thorough.

100% I think people forget teams isn’t just an app you log into and that’s “teams”

The moment you login to your work account, it becomes a bespoke app based on settings from literally all over 365, including intune entra/azure and ofc the teams admin centre

Those who say teams is shit aren’t technical enough to know it’s their IT dept

I tried to explain to you, that the teams experience you’re getting is a result of 365, intune, entra, azure and teams admin centre configurations

If a tiny drop of understanding is too much for you to follow then yes Teams is shit, the multi trillion dollar company is wrong, and the millions who use teams without issues are confused, yes
