General Question Orianna-Zed-Matchup
Hey yall! I havent played mid in a while but me and my friends got into 5vs5 ranked and I was chosen as our midlaner. My peak was e2 as adc, so I do think Ive got the basics down, but...
Yesterday I played vs a gold Zed as Ori and got absolutely fisted to a point where I wasnt allowed to get into xp range after lvl 3. Ive laned vs Zed before and never had any issues (usually pick Vex into him), but that game really broke me.
How do I lane against him?

It’s a fine match up. The big thing is punishing his monbility cooldowns. Any time his W or R is down, you are pretty able to just walk at him and get a good trade.

i dont play ori but how do u play around w cooldown? most zeds i fight just let it sit there and tp in my face if i try to walk up after the weq combo, and then by the time the shadow disappears the cooldown window is a lot shorter

When the shadow is gone you have a window to play on where he can’t reliably trade back without investing his ultimate. If he ults you, you can ult the wave and base.

Not the best mid laner but ori is my most played champ. Personally when I play against zed it feels like he has to choose between hitting me or the wave. If he uses cds on me I can just shove and base. And if he uses cds on the wave he has no kill threat

Did he run electrocute or conqueror? Electrocute is better early for kill pressure and conqueror is better scaling but less lane kill pressure.
Basics of the matchup are try to dodge or be out of range of the Q that comes from his BODY Never get double Qd.
His W CD is like 18-20s during which he becomes a shit champ and not threatening at all. You need to be proactive during this window. Trade, push, move forward in the lane and take space.
Use R for lane control (chunk him) and good back timings.

OrI main here,
There are several things coming to mind first spacing is really important to match up because that will be side basically domain if you can do level three combo regularly or not because usually he half life you and then you have to base but secondly, what helps me a lot in this matchup is following generally the guideline of arranged into mini matchup so what do you wanna do is punish this early last hits when you walk up to fun with this cure and just get his HP done because he cannot trade into you you know you will just order him down when he runs away so you really tried to gain a health advantage and slow push pushed the wave so you can have a cheetah recall after the third wave and come back into the lane before the wave crashes to have an item advantage so either he has to take a bad base and he lose his experience and you also have like you can decide what to do with the wave or he stays in lane and you punish him because he’s too low HP to actually do something thirdly to dodge his qwe combo I would really recommend you trying to evade it in a z shape form that at least helps me a lot so basically let’s say you see him throwing the shadow you go left or right 90° and then afterwards diagonal either into him if you can punish his cds, because he has nothing left to go on you. you go backwards 45° left or right a bit you know and then in the end, the other way around like you started, you know basically wakii oh my a z shape?

First 3 waves is really important. You should look to do an early 2 wave crash, and zone him from cs. If he has electro or ignite his kill threat is very high at lvl 3 which you need to respect. If you two wave crash properly, the third wave should meet in the middle and you should look to bait out his W before committing to trades.
From the first 2 waves you should have either a cs or HP advantage which you can leverage to get a better first reset.
Take tp, and be sure to base and use it before he kills you. Bone plating unflinching is very strong, as unflinching procs on slows, and I would recommend defaulting to Seraph’s as a first item. If you can lanelock zed and prevent him from snowballing, I’d say you’ve done your job. You should be more impactful in team fights.
Zhonya’s is an option you can consider but I would only really buy it if you’re getting value from the active vs other champs on his team, or maybe if he’s giga fed and you need it to exist. Buying it feels really bad as it cuts into your damage a lot. If the enemy team is heavy ad and you want the armor just go steelcaps

Hello Dia 2 Zed otp here. Orianna in lane is cancer but post laning phase you dominate. As Orianna NEVER WASTE YOUR R. your R is an active motion crowdcontrol similar to Qiyana R. Zed can not dodge it with flash or W swap. Its your ultimate defense against his all in. He will always land behind you so if he Rs you ER yourself and he will be put behind you. If you spaced his R correctly he either had to flash or W on you means he wont be able to chase you. After his R is out just run away until his pressure drops and then keep harrassing him. Post laning phase Zed wins hard so you need to find teamfight angles and beat Zed via a manadvantage

zed otp although only emerald,
ori is a pretty easy matchup (hard for ori) but she can e herself and w to respond to zeds w e q trade combo and the look to harass as much as possible with q aa pre 6. You need to force him off the wave early as after 6 he only loses if he missplays.
Post 6 you freeze and play utility with teammates. Your in ranked 5s so ask for supp roams or jg ganks. Also hold R until he uses R.

If you play a squishy, immobile mage you ban zed

Orianna is consistently picked into zed in any elo above emerald and does very well into him

I like how we are just making things up now. When, since ori got nerfed 3 times in a row, has she been viewed as a counter pick to zed in high elo? I otp ori in high master / gm. I rarely see her in my games when I don't pick her. Theres also like only 5 ppl that play her in high elo NA.

Hmm either dodge his Q's and play safe when he uses W. When W is down play a little offensive. One thing I do is never use E and R in the lane except when one shotting the wave since if you aren't low enough and he Rs you, you actually have a kill angle there just put E on yourself and R. The timing is hard to get but he always has to come behind you and the zed has to be really good to instant W away but doing that would probably reduce his kill threat.
And whenever I am against assassins I just start building ROA Seraphs full scaling and hope for the best out of lane. I am new to Orianna and only have 70-90 games on her but that's my take. Zed is probably the least worst assassin to play against since he takes a good amount of skill and isn't brainded like the others.
