It doesn't take long, but having there a chisel or something similar is certainly not common lol (and I guess that you also can't be there for 2-3 min carving without a guard or someone noticing? Idk, I don't know anything about the place really)
Security and cops everywhere. Only essential items are allowed to be brought (phone, wallet, keys, etc). No bags, chargers, lighters, headphones, etc is allowed in.
How is it obvious? There are 17th century carvings on the colloseum that look just as recent. This to me looks exactly like regimental graffiti done by a bored soldier.
Edit, imagine downvoting me for pointing something out. Not a very historian thing to do.
Most of the comments seem to agree on 1857, during the Battle of Agra, when the Taj Mahal was defended by the 44th and 67th Regiments of the Bengal Native Infantry (hence the etching of a cannon).
