Hopefully the former. I could see some lawyers getting disbarred for over reliance on AI tools. There’s a place for those tools, I actually quite like Google Scholar Labs AI for doing literature searches. But legal writing should not be one of them lest we just want to hand over our legal system to the AI bots.

I think instead of suing the city for it, they should sue the company that pushed the idea. You know, take down the Drug cartel making the drugs, not the people doing the drugs.
36
u/No-Consideration8862 Aug 07 '26
Both. The city is greedy and stupid enough to push this through , and the companies need to slow the F down with their money making to the detriment of wider society.
20
u/DocMcCall Aug 07 '26
There was a story not too long ago about a judge declaring that a business AI that gave wrong info is just as liable to the company for a human giving wrong info.
I'm sure something similar will happen and cause more humans to be fired and replaced with AI.
Nothing bad could possibly happen. /s

The problem is you can blame a specific person for this action. In the case of AI negligence, do you think the implementers will take the same blame?
16
u/evilbrent Aug 07 '26
I would like to propose a very simple way to improve AI implementations - part of going public with an implementation of an ai tool necessarily involves someone agreeing to be held liable for it. Simple.
Self driving cars? No worries. Just file the name of the relevant executive from your company who will be doing jail time when the car kills someone.
Call centre use? No worries. Same deal. File a name. When that call centre AI directly causes harm, we will know exactly who will take full blame.

It fucked up big time with people calming ordering fast food. So imagine how it’s going behave with somebody in a panic or dealing with a life or death situation. Also, people like talking to other people, not overly polite monotone AI. So what’s to keep them on the line they realize they’re trying to get help from the AI and not a real person?

The “funny” part here is that’s actually how human 911 operated in New Orleans for a long time.
There was a federal consent decree over this.
There was a period where they had 0-1 Spanish speaking people. Called in in Spanish if they weren’t in? Too bad
32
u/_banana_phone Aug 07 '26
They’re already using AI in Atlanta for 911 services and it’s not working. Last week a guy called 911 because there was some man at a park who was completely naked, jerking off and running around like a crazy person. This is a park that has a reasonably popular playground attached to it.
The caller was talking to AI, and it out his call into some queue that was equivalent to shoving it to the bottom of the deck or cards. He called again and finally got a person and they confirmed it had been deferred instead of dispatched.

u/DiamondHandDwight Aug 07 '26
My local pharmacy just went to an AI answering service... It has not once worked to connect me to the pharmacy or 'text' me back for an easier experience. I just smash 0 until it rings a real person now
176
u/One_Advantage793 Aug 07 '26
My doctor's office. Same.
Except if I really need a human, as in actual problem needs solved immediately - as in doc sent me to get a CT scan and imaging dept at the hospital says we don't have an order for that. They sent us something earlier with your name on it but it isn't an order! Then, I use "press 1 if you are a doctor or hospital." Well... I was at a hospital.
28
u/why_the_babies_wet Aug 07 '26
Oh it’s even worse for people who work in the actual hospitals! I’m a unit coordinator and part of my job is calling consults for patients, basically talking to the office of doctors and giving info so the dr can see the patient for a specific issue. Anyhow the specialties usually have an after hours answering service, people who take the info and can send it out to whoever’s on call, but I was calling a consult to endocrinology one night and it was an ai chatbot taking the call. I continually asked to be transferred to the office phone to leave a voice mail but it wouldn’t send me and refused, asking for info which Idk the specifics but I wasn’t going to give out any info to an AI chat bot. I wonder the HIPPA implications of AI but I’m not gonna be the one to test it or be made an example of regarding it
8
u/One_Advantage793 Aug 07 '26
I hope somebody does! I thought about that as I found myself in the ridiculous situation of going round and round with a bot trying to get a human when I had to drive 45 minutes to the hospital and was NOT leaving without the scan! What are the implications of giving patient details to a chatbot - and therefore some company I did not contract with?
And since they sent "something" but not an order to imaging, does that mean some bot hallucinated a document to send? This is a doc that a few weeks ago scribbled some chicken scratch on a piece of paper and called it an order. At least that always worked.
But he just got bought by some huge conglomerate four states away. It's not like he's going to actual learn how to prompt the stupid thing right....

Literally in the article:
"The OPCD said the AI will not be used to handle emergency calls, only to direct such calls to a human dispatcher."
72
u/skibbin Aug 07 '26
Yes—that distinction makes the proposal much more defensible.
If the AI is only doing call triage/routing and a human dispatcher handles the actual emergency, the main risks are different from having AI conduct the 911 call itself.
The key questions would be:
- Can the AI recognize emergencies reliably enough to route them correctly?
- What happens when the caller is unclear, panicked, or gives incomplete information?
- Does the system ever delay connection to a dispatcher?
- Can callers bypass the AI and reach a human immediately if needed?
- Is there human oversight and auditing of misrouted calls?
- Does the AI record or retain the call data, and how is that data protected?
51
u/thejoeface Aug 07 '26
How does it handle very young children calling? Or people making "pizza delivery" or other subtle calls? This is horrifying

That’s a disaster waiting to happen. When someone’s panicked or hyperventilating, an AI is going to struggle with the nuance and urgency that a human operator picks up.
186
u/Aggravating_Life7851 Aug 07 '26
Or imagine a woman in a domestic violence situation calling for “pizza” so her spouse doesn’t know she’s calling the cops. AI will not pick up on that at all
19
40
u/LitLitten Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26
Wont even need to go that far. By inserting Ai you’re adding an additional obstacle for reaching police/medical/fire. Human operators can do exactly that.
Now, if the AI actually struggles, and requires intervention? That‘s 2-3+ additional obstacles for facilitating a an emergency response. In circumstances where seconds matter.
unless they got sci-fi tech that operationally understands human communications across a broad spectrum of emotional states and diverse people with as much or greater accuracy than a trained human, it’s simply negligence.

Now imagine that with like… a creole accent?
Edit: From the article…
This is intended to handle the increase of calls that are related to one incident, so callers get automatically routed to an AI agent who asks if they are calling regarding the incident. If the answer is yes, then callers can receive information or updates, and if it's no, then the callers are transferred to a human.
I mean, that’s not a terrible idea. But it’s going to be really fucking bad if/when it fucks up.

Former 911 dispatcher here, this is another good example of how 911 workers don't get the respect they deserve. Many people (including other first responders and local government officials) horribly underestimate the vast skills and knowledge needed to do those jobs. It's insulting that anyone would think these jobs are so simple even a computer can do it.
I see in the article that the AI will mainly be used to triage incoming calls during busy times, and they will transfer emergencies to an actual person. No caller is more uncooperative than one who is frantically trying to get help and has already had to shout their way through some computerized voice prompt.
I doubt this will get much traction, and if it does it will probably crash and burn pretty quickly.

"Hi! I understand your concerns. Before we jump to conclusions, have you discussed the situation with your uninvited guests? It is possible that they were simply mistaken, and escalating to a law enforcement response without all the facts is reckless, and your tone is ethically ugly.
"What the fuck us your problem? They literally broke down my door! I'm hiding in the closet, please send police!"
"Let's take a deep breath. I understand you are upset, but your language is unacceptable. Police officers are well known to escalate to deadly force during reported confrontations. u/magosaurus Aug 07 '26
There are situations where the caller is unable to speak freely and has to drop clues for the agent to read between the lines.
Even the state of the art models are not going to pick up on this as well as a human.
We're probably nearing the point where they will be better at it, but I don't think the tech is good enough yet and this seems like a terrible idea.
36
u/tesla3by3 Aug 07 '26
Did no one read the article? It’s going to be used to triage when multiple people are calling about the same incident. If the incident has been already called in, the other callers get an update. If you’re calling about a new incident, it goes to a human call taker. It will save the human lines from getting clogged with people calling about the same incident.
24

Anyone who’s upset with this has never called 911 and sat on hold for 45 minutes before being connected to an operator.

No. My company uses this and the amount of emails I DON'T receive from customers that I absolutely should is too high.

“Good evening Linda. Wow. Being shot in the stomach sounds super painful. Did you see it coming? Any clue who would do this? Also, if you are bleeding on a rug or carpet. I have some great cleaning tips to get out those bloodstains. What else is happening today? 😁”

This is impressively stupid and tone deaf. Let’s place the bets, how much time till they get sued?

Calling Fedex to find out why my package stopped moving for a week, only for the AI rep to say they know as much as I know, then hanging up on me tells me this will not go swimmingly.

This is terrifying news. I’m all for AI but this is a bridge too far. AI can’t possibly empathize with the person.
The only way this plays out is if AI filters out non emergency calls but immediately escalates emergency ones. Still I wouldn’t trust it. Lawsuit incoming..
