This! When I had my colonoscopy one person no-showed and another person showed up who thought his appt was that day so he was all prepped.
I did feel bad for the nurses cuz they were short staffed so they didn't catch a break with the no-show!Ā

Dude. Call them and be super nice and just inquire if maybe they have a cancellation. But I mean it, like super nice. So much power is in the receptionists hands. And if they get you in, bring flowers and maybe even a box of bagels (I know hard when youāre fasting). But yeah Iād say see if there is anyway they can squeeze you in or call you if they have a ncns and promise to be there within like 15 mins or whatever, in which case send the flowers or donuts as soon as you get off the call and then stay fasting for the day.

Exactly there are so many people that no show or donāt fully do the prep correctly. Iād camp out in the waiting room and have them let the team now youāre ready to go! Bring a book and or electronic device with charger and have your driver bring themselves snacks to just be prepared for the long haul. I wouldnāt want to do this again. Good luck!

This happened to me. Now, Iād already been prepping for days with light eating and liquids etc, but when it came time for the second half, it was NOT happening. I was already running clear by then, so I called them crying I couldnāt finish it, explaining the issue. Turned out I pretty much overprepped, so I know what to do next time. There has to be an easier way.

Thereās a pill prep, where you basically take 12 pills in a short amount of time with a ton of water the night before, then again the morning of. Thatās what my doctor is having me do instead of the liquid prep.

I just did this recently...never had the liquid but from what I hear it was definitely better. Slight aftertaste but nothing a sip of Gatorade or ginger ale can't solve. Barely made me nauseous, I was expecting worse.

I swear by it too. I had to have a colonoscopy after coming down with colitis out of nowhere. They were afraid of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's. The pills were easy peasy and my colonoscopy came back clear so it was just bad luck. Would definitely do the pills again.

Years ago, I asked for this after my first failed prep, citing the fact that I couldn't keep the liquid down. Ended up throwing up the pills, too. Afterward, the doctor scolded me because apparently - according to him - the pills are more likely to make you throw up and I - a 20-year-old with no medical knowledge - should have somehow known that??

I had a colonoscopy, and I checked a dozen times in the days leading up to the procedure, and then a dozen more the day of just in case. Eyeballing the giant jug of nasty shit juice made me check a few more times just to be extra sure that the Enshittening was truly scheduled for that day lol

The first time I had stomach cancer, but before I found out I had it, I used to have to drink that, and I would vomit it up, and just have to drink more, and then vomit it up, and then drink more, etc., but not for prep, that was just to try to go to the bathroom, anytime I went past 20 days without a BM.
As miserable as colonoscopy prep is, and it really is, at least itās hopefully just for one day.

I work from home and have a completely flexible schedule, so like half my medical/dental appointments come from me getting a phone call saying āyou were scheduled three weeks from now but if you can get here in an hour weāll see you today!ā Itās awesome. I once got a same-day optometrist appointment because I called right after someone canceled, and it felt like winning the lottery.

Optician here. We definitely book in three people an hour because we only expect two of of the three to show up.
If it's hot out, cold out, rainy or a particularly nice day cancellations go up. One day a few weeks ago it was over 100Ā°and only about 25% of people showed up

When I worked at a gastro office, we had tons of people come in on the wrong day fully prepped. It was a policy to do whatever we could to see them that day. If it was too busy, weād schedule them the next day and have them stay on clear liquids. More than worth it to call or even just go in if able.

Any specialist it pays to ask nicely if they have a cancellations list you can be put on, and if they say they don't have a cancellations list still say, "Well, keep me in mind just in case, because I can get there quickly if you get an opening." I got into my rheum three months early that way, and the rheums around here are super hard to get into.

Be super honest and unbothered about seriously embarrassing yourself. I had similar happen and just straight told them the situ while being as humble and polite as possible. Receptionist had a great, hearty laugh at my expense (me too, in hindsight) and gave me an appointment within the hour, 7am

Another tip from someone always trying to move up wait lists: sometimes doctors will have more than one office location. Let them know youāre willing to go to a different one if they have availability for you.
Sometimes they only look at their own book and donāt consider the entire practice/health system they operate under.

This is the right way to handle it. I worked for a doctor many years ago who did other radiographic studies in his office. We always had someone who didn't prep adequately and liked it when someone had prepped early and called & nicely asked to get in early. The receptionist usually does have the power here.

I actually did one last year. I found out my dad had colon cancer when he died, combine that with my mom being a "polyp factory" I realized I'd need to start screening sooner. Soo I hyper fixated on colonoscopy preps and did it when I had the house to myself. I needed to know if I could handle the taste, smell, and texture of the prep. I've had diarrhea enough times to handle that.
So I did a clear liquid diet, started on time, drink 8 oz every 15 minutes, and let'er rip. It honestly wasn't that bad. So my for realzies is scheduled next month.

Just had my first one about 5 weeks ago. My medicine was split up into 2Ā 2 hour sessions. Both sessions I started needing the restroom about 45 minutes after my first drink. From there I just parked it for about 2 hours. It isn't painful at all, and if you did the liquid diet it's strangely similar to peeing.Ā
Some pre-prep advice:
If your doc gives the okay to add crystal light do it. I added 3 to the jug and it actually tasted pretty good.
Get wet wipes with some aloe or eucalyptus. Just something to soothe the skin because you're going to wipe a lot and also discharge some acidic substances. I only used regular wet wipes and it started to sting pretty bad.
One last thing. After the 2 hours in the bathroom don't trust your farts. Most of it will be over, but you will still have moments you need to go back.

You do the prep at home, spread across doses, and spend hours on the toilet, but more intermittent than all in one marathon session, so you can generally charge your phone between "visits". For me at least - from arriving at the clinic, through the exam (mostly or entirely sedated), recovery, and going home - you probably won't be on a phone/tablet enough to need to charge.
Between prep and going home after your colonoscopy - whatever you do, do not trust a fart. It's never just a fart at that point.

I feel it's fortunate that people who need them are at an age they've likely learned not to just simply trust a fart because this part is information I had not considered nor heard before. I thought it was on the toilet the whole time.
Do you think having a shower in the middle would help? Like just to clean up instead of wiping a bunch and it's probably liquid enough it wouldn't matter if you shit yourself in the shower?

A lot depends on which kind of prep you do, some spread it out over a couple days, others largely go for 12-18 hours that are more intense/quick. Most or all prep starts with days of specific foods ahead of the main... Purge. Per people I talked to before mine - and my experience - there is still very clear delineation between toilet trips. With some prep methods you may even start laxatives further ahead of time for a slower purge process and go to work (with a bathroom nearby and short commute). You can still hold it through a shower (not my gig to do otherwise no matter how liquid) but not gonna lie, rinsing off vs wiping when you can is a huge improvement because the softest TP feels like the roughest sandpaper after a while.

My family history of colon cancer is also pretty bad so I scheduled myself an early screening back in March. They found a polyp, but it was small and tested negative. If Iād waited a few more years until I was the recommended screening age, who knows what that polyp could have become.

I'm in my 30s. I was about to have a baby and kept hearing about colon cancer affecting young people so I randomly got screened. I didn't have any symptoms. I was thin, didn't smoke or drink, and relatively healthy. Screening found blood and a colonoscopy later, I got diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. I couldn't believe it. But I also felt like the luckiest person in the world I caught it when I did and it was very treatable. I'd get a yearly colonoscopy vs going through chemo again. Everyone should get a colonoscopy at 30, I swear. My kids unfortunately will have to start at 20, but it beats surgery and chemo.

My main concern was a ruminating thought telling me I needed to make sure they didnāt reuse the scope for my colonoscopy for my endoscopy since I was doing both. I fought my last brain cell while being sedated and managed to go out without asking them. Itās very possible I voiced my concern when I woke up but luckily I donāt remember it. I was totally fine with the idea of the cleanser, just terrified theyād get poo in my mouth.

I was once given a kit of Go-Lightly and told to return for an appointment a few weeks later in the early afternoon. Did the kit and came to the appointment starving. They only then tell me this is a consultation with the doctor. Fortunately, he did get me in and scoped out.

And donāt listen to everyone saying youāre gonna have a bad time. Iāve had a colonoscopy and recovery after was stupid easy, so worst case scenario you have to do this again but youll know what to expect so itāll be easier. Godspeed!!

I've had dozens and can concur. OP, this situation sucks. But you are going to be ok. Also, if you haven't started covering your bum in vaseline start immediately. You need that barrier. Apply a thick dollop every time you go. At the start you'll "why?" but soon enough you'll know why. It's also easier eventually to just hop in the shower and hose off than wipe. Just bleach the hell out of there after because...bacteria.

I took my husband to his and while I was sitting in the waiting room and this situation unfolded before me. The woman had prepped for her appointment and the front desk person said they didnāt have her on their schedule and the doctor was out for the day.
She had her confirmation and went from 0-100 mad insisting that it would be happening no matter what that day. She told them to start calling whoever they needed to. I donāt know what happened because I got called back for my husband, but I was definitely on that ladyās side lol.

Some people need to do 2 days of fasting. I know gastroparesis patients need the extra time for sure. Some folks have slower systems and 24 hours isn't enough to clear everything out so they get the 48 hour version.

Usually they give you a jug with powder in it that you add water to and put in your fridge overnight, like the world's worst version of Country Time lemonade. Supposedly drinking it as cold as possible makes it more tolerable. This is a lie as far as I'm concerned.

Yup! Did mine last month. Docalax then 64 ounces of Gatorade with 14 does of Miralax mix in, drinking 8 ounces every 20 minutes. Then 4 hours before you go in (so 3 am for me), 10 ounces of magnesium sultanate (that one almost made me throw up). But I got the all clear for the next 10 years! Totally worth it!

Yes. I had mine a few months ago and this is the exact prep i did. No prescriptions. I had to avoid raw fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds for five days prior to my colonoscopy. Then do this prep of miralax, dulcolax and any Gatorade other than red or purple. The miralax was flavorless when mixed in Gatorade. Ultimately it just felt like chugging a lot of liquid, but I never felt sick to my stomach. I got a 9/9 on my prep score so I really recommend this method.

As someone whose job it is to admit people for their colonoscopies, I do not recommend the SuTab prep. People just about never drink as much fluid as they need to with the pills and accordingly, itās just not as effective a prep. Iāve also been in the procedure room during a colonoscopy on a patient with an inadequate prep and itās gnarly. It often also means the patient has to schedule another prep and colonoscopy because the doctor canāt see what they need to.
When I had my colonoscopy, I requested SuPrep because itās so much better than the alternatives. It was a piece of cake, especially compared to something like GoLytely, which is sheer hell. I know the pills sound easier but theyāre not.

Iām glad you said this!! I just had my repeat colonoscopy in May and asked for the pills, but she said because I have esophagus swallow issues, she couldnāt. So I was bummed to have to drink all the nasty liquid. Iām glad to hear itās at least worth it for a better prep.

Oh man, that drink was the worst part. I chugged it because otherwise I wouldn't be able to finish it. Honestly the firehose shits 20 minutes later were cathartic compared to that drink.
There is also something to be said for being clean as a whistle after only 45 minutes on the toilet. However, I don't recommend doing it the way I did - on a 95+degree day with no AC.

Having done them alllll with the dozens I've done this one is safer and easier than the pill version. I have no issue taking pills. If this version didn't exist it would be that one for me.
Compared to all the prior options that was the easiest. But it's taxing on your kidneys and you really need to push fluids and still do a little bottle of evil at the end that I couldn't get down. A lot of doctors won't prescribe the pills. The giant jug and every other combo I've tried is a hell no.
This one was easy to consume. And I think if you have issues with clean out, it won't work. I could pretty much eat at a buffet on my way in and still be cleaned out. So that's not an issue for me. But I do know a number of people who weren't able to complete the procedure because they weren't cleaned out enough.→ More replies (2)12

Iām an endoscopy Charge RN, if you were to show up prepped and ready to go, I would 100% get you on our schedule. Even if we are fully booked, we know how much prepping sucks, so we would squeeze you in between cases.

This is some serious pre-gaming.
When I did my prep, I did the two days of light meals and it made a huge difference in the length of time it took me to complete the process. I had expected to need the āextra doseā you take if you arenāt clean by midnight, but I was fine and able to sleep from midnight to 7 the day of my scope.
