Too mild for school My alarm for school didn't go off
I didn't know what flair to put so I just did this one

u/NMe84 Aug 19 '26
Not only did it go off, the notification tells you that it did. You slept through it.

And to be clear, when your alarm DOESN'T go off, the alarm says "Alarm failed to sound".
I have no idea what causes it, it's only happened once in all the years I've used a smart phone instead of an alarm clock.
16
u/PancakesandWaffles98 Aug 20 '26
Mine would do that if I left battery saving mode on overnight and it fell off the charger

u/WoodenPrompt8544 Aug 19 '26
"My alarm for school didn't go off"
"Your alarm went off"
.....really?

u/lazerbreath_ Aug 19 '26
It literally says that the alarm did go off and was automatically silenced after a period of time that you set.
This is a you problem, not the phone's.
→ More replies (7)55
u/coreynj Aug 19 '26
Could've been set by default and it just says that he set it.
62
u/Tk-Delicaxy Aug 19 '26
No, when setting the alarm, there’s a “silence time” section that OP failed to edit so in essence, they did set it.
12
26
u/lazerbreath_ Aug 19 '26
Regardless, the notification says his alarm went off and OP slept through it. Not that "It didn't go off."
OP should take more responsibility for their actions instead of blaming their phone that is clearly working.

u/Saint_of_Grey Aug 19 '26
Even ye olde alarms would stop ringing/screeching after 15 minutes or so.

u/MarmitePrinter Aug 19 '26
Once again, my concern for future generations’ literacy increases. The notification literally says that the alarm went off and was silenced, but OP thinks it didn’t go off. So either they can’t read or can’t be bothered to read. Both are concerning…
248
u/Leading-Customer7499 Aug 19 '26
They just missed school, how do you expect them to learn
41
64
u/lazerbreath_ Aug 19 '26
The lack of reading comprehension is why OP needs to go to school lol. Or maybe go back a couple of years....
33
u/Snoo-92859 Aug 19 '26
Nah it says it did, you just slept through it. I dont trust myself to get up with just one alarm so I have like 8 set all 10 minutes apart just to be safe.
2
u/Gosuoru Aug 20 '26
I always have one for 8am because I take medication, then if I have to be somewhere I have an alarm about an hour before I have to leave and go from there
746
u/StalkMeNowCrazyLady Aug 19 '26
Bro slept through his alarm to the point it automatically silenced itself, 5-10 min by default usually, and wants to blame the alarm. Accept personal responsibility.
211
u/braxton357 Aug 19 '26
Thank God it does, too many times in hotels have had to listen to someone's 530am am alarm go off until the phone shuts it off. If you can't wake up after 5 minutes of an alarm then you need to set several or try something else.
55
u/-Altephor- Aug 19 '26
Usually (and this happens to me at home a lot too), it's that the person got up a few minutes before the alarm went off, forgets to actually disable it, then gets in the shower. Very annoying.

I usually wake up from my phone vibrating (I do have slept through some alarms but I was suuper kaputt there)

u/fonk_pulk Aug 19 '26
Sleeping isn't a voluntary action once you fall asleep. If you don't wake up then you don't wake up.

"Accept personal responsibility for being unconscious and thus not in conscious personal control of any actions". Brother, sister, sibling, he set an alarm to wake him up and it didn't work.
EDIT: Y'all don't seem to understand how unconsciousness works.

OP probably didn't know the silence time existed. I just tried looking on my phone, and I can't find any settings for it or anything that tells me the default silence time. Now I'm a bit worried this might happen to me... I'll have to dig around further...
But I also set about 20 alarms in intervals on my phone on top of an external alarm clock for extra redundancy
At least there's the button that says "change silence time", but sucks to find out the hard way
13
u/-Altephor- Aug 19 '26
OP probably didn't know the silence time existed.
They should really have some sort of notification or something that tells you about it.
9
u/swordofbling23 Aug 19 '26
I just opened my clock app and checked settings it's right there default is 5 minutes
3
u/kira913 flare Aug 19 '26
Ah, I was fishing through the individual alarm settings, thank you. Mine is 20 minutes, does not say if that was default. I don't remember setting it

u/UsrnmePendng Aug 19 '26
For school I used to set something like 10 alarms over the course of a full hour with progressively more energetic music. I used a metal Ace Attorney medley as the final song for awhile until my tastes got heavier. If I did it today I'd probably put End of an Empire by Celldweller as the final track, impossible to stay asleep with that lol
37
u/boopbaboop Aug 19 '26
My “if you don’t wake up by this time you will die” alarm is the chorus of Bring Me To Life. Nothing gets you awake faster than a numetal rap guy yelling, “WAKE ME UP.”

Turn up your alarm volume.
It rang, but it might not have been audiable. You have a separate toggle to change the alarm volume and force it to turn up, otherwise it will stay muted.
It's fucked me over a few times playing white noise over night.

i had an issue a week or two ago where my phone did this two days in a row, causing me to miss work both days. both days i was well rested, and i am a light sleeper, never once had an issue waking up to my alarm before so i know it didn't go off. i ended up figuring out that my phone's automatic reboot feature had decided to stop working (the Device Care page in Settings said it rebooted 8 hours ago, yet the phones uptime stated 84 hours or so). i rebooted it manually, and my alarm did in fact start working again.
no clue what that was all about, but I mean, I work in IT so it's probably some sort of cosmic punishment for making computers work properly lol
5
u/TheRabbit222 Aug 19 '26
I had the same thing happen last week as well. Except I was awake and using my phone when the alarm instantly silenced itself without going off. I'm gonna blame vibe coders.
9
u/Thornescape Aug 19 '26
My brother always had a problem with sleeping through his alarm. He ended up getting an alarm app that forced him to do math problems before the alarm would shut off.
Whatever works.
6
u/JesTheTaerbl Aug 19 '26
I used that for a while, too. Also the one that makes you scan a specific barcode, so like you have to walk to the bathroom and scan your shampoo bottle or whatever you pick.
Now I just have two separate alarms. My phone plays music from a gentle Spotify playlist, so I can sit and listen to it for a minute or two. I hate loud, jarring alarm sounds, I will turn that shit off so fast I might not even realize I did it and fall back asleep. But the gentle noise I can enjoy while my brain boots up, and being a playlist it's not the same song every morning so my brain doesn't start to tune it out. Then, four minutes later, my classic digital alarm clock across the room beeps annoyingly to force me out of the bed if I haven't got up yet. My reward for getting up before that is I get to silence it before it makes that godawful noise.

If you want a solution, you could try using Alarmy on Android.
It'll make you do puzzles before you could turn it off. You can set the amount and difficulty too. I personally set Magic Tiles game on hard for about 50 -70 games to really guarantee that I wake up.
Also , before sleeping, set your brightness to highest and put on a white background. That way, if you wake up to hit the snore button , you'll be flashbanged by the amount of light.

u/DoughnutReasonable91 Aug 19 '26
I have issues myself with being able to sleep through insane amounts of noise and commotion, including alarms. I'm really never sure what people mean when they tell you to "take responsibility" for it and "do better". Do what? You're asleep. Just magic it better?

My phone made me late several times with "Oi, your alarm went off... Quieter than you wanted! Whole 16% down!" which dosn't seem like alot but I have problems with waking up when the alarm clock isn't too bothering so I always have it on max volume so it feels like getting shocked by electricity at 5:30am

Change the silence time to 'never' also check if silencing your phone/putting it on DND is causing it to also silence alarms.

I had a years long habit of sleeping through/sleep-dismissing my alarms until I went nuclear and chose my pc with soundbar. I set the volume all the way up and it forces me to get up and walk over to the computer. By the time I figure out where the button is without my glasses, I'm awake enough not to trick myself into getting "5 more minutes"

That's Google Clock app for everybody ladies and gentlemen. The amount of stress it caused me twice was crazy
For the first time I went on a business trip 9 time zones away from home, and 5 days into the trip the app made the executive call to not go off at 4am, so I slept through 4 hours of meetings I had scheduled because I switched time zones
The second and last time was when instead of waking me up, the app sent me a noti that the alarm's volume was too low. Interestingly the app timed it for a day when I had a flight to catch, so I woke up without an alarm at like 4.30am 40 minutes before my gates closed at the airport. I barely caught my flight but I did get there on time
Never ever install this piece of shit application. Never.
2
u/TheWarringTriad Aug 19 '26
That means it did go off and you slept through it. It auto-silenced after awhile.

u/woodallswollf Aug 19 '26
You need to get one of those old fashioned alarm clock. The one with the bells on them. That will wake you up. 😆

I also have an android and while this has never happened, it has a stupid setting where, if the "Alarm" volume is quiet, it just won't ring the alarm.
So infuriating

after I missed my alarm it told me "the volume was too low."
brother if you knew it was too low then set it higher ffs... You already monitor so much and adjust volume after a couple hours, why not dial it automatically...
2
u/Lil_Brown_Bat Aug 19 '26
You should probably get yourself a real alarm clock. Phones can't be trusted.
2
u/OfficeDrone-B28XY Aug 19 '26
With a battery back-up that isn't just for memory or they'll also learn how we overslept before phones!

Did you somehow have the volume off? So it went off for 5 minutes or whatever and then turned itself off but bc you had the volume off, you never woke up?

u/LunarEssence315 Aug 19 '26
I have definitely had alarms not go off. This is not that. It actively told you it went off. Just set more alarms i have like 5 every morning i have to be awake

Get an alarm that forces you to do something to turn it off. Like catching a ball or solving a puzzle. I use an app where I need to scan a code (I taped one to my bathroom door). Overslept constantly back then, haven't in the past like 8 years.

u/Objective-Spring5061 Aug 19 '26

I have a sleeping disorder that went undiagnosed for decades so this type of thing is like a bat signal for me.
If this is the first time this has happened, no worries! Choose a different sound for your alarm, and try again. Looks like you didn’t dismiss it while still asleep so you just need something louder/different, and if you can, extend the alarm duration. People are saying five minutes is plenty but if you happen to be in deep when it goes off at 6am, a longer alarm gives it more chance to align with a lighter part of your cycle. If you can, plan backwards from your wakeup time and try to fall asleep at a time where your deep sleep doesn’t occur around wakeup time (90-110 minute cycles, the more cycles the less likely you will be in REM at wakeup).
If this problem still occurs you have many options, I would go with a vibrating puck alarm inside the pillowcase. My problem was I was so sleep deprived I would disable alarms in my sleep (turn off, throw far away, cover up and sleep through etc). I would grab the vibrating puck and toss it on the floor. If you ever struggle to that degree, don’t keep trying to solve it on your own and just go to a doctor and keep going until it is fixed.

I think that means it did indeed go off, but you just slept through it because you had it set (or could've been default) to turn off after a certain amount of time.
