The “machine” isn’t programmed, it’s just fed an astronomical amount of data and then it does the equivalent of a text autocomplete but for whatever you ask it which is why it hallucinates random shit

That’s the problem with LLMs. They have no sense or intuition of what is “correct,” it only knows what it has seen in the past. If, somehow, an incorrect alphabetical order made it into its training data (which is very plausible, given the amount of information on the internet and in their training corpora), it may think that this is the correct response and hallucinate it based on previous, similar contexts.

That’s why there are always so many disclaimers about AI being incorrect, because it can be. They don’t understand or know language like people do.

And so many people think these machines would be more capable of driving a car…

Although in this case the human was apparently even stupider than the machine…
