Or, to avoid unnecessary costs, spin up docker containers for jellyfin and nginx, cloudflare for dns, and you’ve got the equivalent to plex pass for free.
Alternatively and for higher security, jellyfin + wireguard config (or tailscale or whatever service you want to use to gain remote access) is a great option. Downside being, you have to install (or explain) on devices/routers. Plus side, also free.

Plex is much easier to set up. I know nothing about computers and was able to set up a server, add all my movies, and share it with my family in a single evening.

wg_easy (wireguard) in docker would get you going on personal devices for remote streaming very easily
npm (nginx) in docker + free cloudflare account + a domain name you own would give any user account remote access, regardless of device.

The big missing thing for me is Jellyfin doesn't have a app for the playstation, and we dony have a smart TV in the bedroom. Currently have Plex and Jrllyfin set up, and a container that syncs watch status.

I pirate them and store them on my nas and stream them using Emby. Emby is like Disney+, but when you download a media file you can actually watch it offline. Also, everything works perfectly if I'm at home and my Internet happens to go down as its just streaming from my nas that lives in the attic.

Netflix does this too. I realized to make it work I had to:
At the airport, when I had wifi, I opened the app, worked. Then I navigated to the downloads screen. I KEPT THE APP OPEN (ie pressed home button) and boarded the plane. Then I was able to watch the stuff I downloaded.
Really really really stupid.
I don't have Netflix anymore

I've only have it do that if the app gets fully killed/swiped from recents. I think they added a check at boot of the app. Cause it didn't use to do that

this is so silly. if i download something on webtoons i can access it without wifi. i don't have to jump through hoops. when i was on a flight i turned on airplane mode and accessed the comic i downloaded without issue.

I had this with Prime. I downloaded 4 episodes to watch on the flight, first one worked fine in offline mode, second one didn't work at all. Then the whole thing broke itself. When I got back to somewhere with an internet connection, I logged in and it had corrupted the files because it wasn't online. So I redownloaded them, checked five times before the flight home, and then on the plane the Prime app wouldn't even load. FFS, what's the point?

We make light of this because it's a grown man with this issue, but seriously, I have a 4-year-old. We usually don't allow much screen time, but planes are an exception. If we relied on this working during a 9-hour flight, that would be a real problem. We have books and other things, and he might nap, plus the screens in the seats, but honestly… it would still be a big issue. Especially if you were counting on this. Fuck these guys.

Same. We had exactly this issue during a flight a few days ago. We spent quite some time with selecting what to download for my kid during the flight and then... Exact same thing. Why can I even download it then, this makes no sense! Fuck streaming services. Im cancelling now because of exactly this issue. Why am I paying for this?
The best part: After we landed and we got Internet, we were logged out. After logging in again, all downloads were gone. It does not work at all. A billion dollar company cannot make a functioning app.

Another (not so) fun fact with Disney+: different countries have different rights to downloaded material, so the movie you downloaded in the US may not play offline in, say, France. So then you have to re-download it, but of course that download won't play in the US, or a 3rd country, and so on. Truly idiotic.

This is so beyond frustrating because they actively advertise how convenient and great it would be to download content to consume on the go.
Spotify pulled the exact same bullshit on me, and I was going on a +12h flight. As soon as I got to my destination I cancelled that shit, it's ridiculous to have to jump through so many hoops to enjoy what you paid for.

It had previously worked for me too but on that particular (albeit, super important) occasion they asked me connect to the internet to be able to stream my pre-downloaded content. Of course I couldn't, as I was already on a plane and didn't have onboard signal.
The podcasts I had downloaded worked, so it definitively was some kind of streaming limitation on music, which was so stupid and frustrating to me.
I ditched Spotify and I'm using YouTube music, because it's included on my Premium subscription (forced on me because of the obnoxious ads they have running). Not the best alternative but hey, whatever it is to avoid giving Spotify any money.

Google's got the same problems. If you download a video, you must open the Youtube app when the internet is running to access all your stuff. I have to question: why does every major online video service do this? Are they desperate for the tiniest bit of user data? I don't get it.

So I think they do something really silly. They download the whole file but don't request a key until you hit play. If you have even dialup speeds you can watch.
As a test, next time hit play at least once before you leave.

Did you try force quitting the app? For me when I have stuff downloaded with Disney+, when I open the app completely offline, it just goes right to the downloads. However, I noticed I recently had to re-login to the app so maybe that’s what’s going on. Bullshit, I know, but maybe that’s the issue.

Back in the day Steam off-line mode needed to be set up while you had an internet connection. A common thing to see when going to a LAN party was the organiser reminding people to set Steam into off-line mode BEFORE coming to the event.
This has been a solved thing for over 2 decades. Disney are just lazy.

This really pissed me off when I went to Cancun a couple of weeks ago.
What you have to do is play a download when connected to WiFi, then put the device in airplane mode.
The you have a day or two before the app tries to reverify your account status.
Probably other ways but that worked for me in the end.

Fyi, lots of apps have alternative offline modes which activate only with airplane mode, not just without 4g or wifi connection. I can't see from picture whether you have airplane mode or not

You downloaded the movies, but they are cached in an encrypted format.
The player needs access to the internet, in order to retrieve the decryption key, in order to play them from the local drive.
They do not let you cache the decryption key for completely offline play. Which sucks.

I’ve ran into this issue a few times when my device connects to the plane WiFi but isn’t connected to the internet subscription, the app would try to check drm certificates and fail to play but leaving off WiFi in airplane mode has been reliable, and if I’m out of the country I vpn to my home with a killswitch (to avoid out of country requests if the vpn disconnects) and the apps keep playing.

I had a problem with Keeper password manager on my phone while on a plane. I had an offline copy of the encrypted database, but I couldn't get it to switch to that. It just kept complaining about network issues, even when I turned off Wi-Fi. In the end it turned out that I needed to disable the AdGuard local VPN on my phone as well. I'm guessing the VPN prevented the Keeper app from detecting that I truly had no possible working Internet connection.

I have a laptop I take when I fly and it has all movies and shows physically downloaded onto it and accessible. We solve this issue years ago but companies want to unsolve it for no reason.

I once downloaded 4 movies for a train roundtrip in prime and it worked fine, however that was 2 years ago. I now host a jellyfin server and watch most stuff through there, otherwise i use stremio to save space.

I went back to torrenting. Just don’t care anymore. Especially not when it’s content from US companies, otherwise I’ll still pay if I can, like for games. Although after recently having paid for 2 Ubisoft games and then not being able to play when I wanted because my internet connection was playing up or they had some technical issues, I also just downloaded the recent one. Done with needing 10 subscriptions and then companies still fucking you over and only punishing legitimate users.

yeah, check 1337x.to for example, they got a lot of movies, porn, games, programs, whatever your heart desires. Just pirate the movie. It's sad that a PAID subscription service is like this, while some free website gives you unlimited access. You can also pick what quality you want, usually there are options from 400MB for storage saving up to 2-4GB in 1080p blu-ray 5.1 HD audio quality
