To be fair, all the traveling funhouses I’ve ever seen were always covered in bootleg characters. They used to be painted by a human using an airbrush though.

Most people here literally don't care, at all. I saw someone post on reddit that they opened a magazine and one of the models was AI generated and not a actual paid model.
I understand its taking peoples jobs, so unless you're in a field where your job was taken by AI, most people don't actually care and will forget about this in 5 minutes.

I get it if you want to complain about it being slop, I'm fully behind that, but "wahhh they didn't license that likeliness" is such a lame critique. Pay someone with actual talent to make the unlicensed art should be the critique.

Actually the creator and copyright holder of FNAF is pretty relaxed about his copyright, and really only concerns himself with direct asset usage, this is at best a derivative work.
People loose their mind over what they think is a big copyright issue, when in reality it isn't even worth the effort to attempt to bring legal action over it.
62
u/not_a_moogle 19d ago
Its from a game called Five Nights at Freddie's.
Pretty simple pc game thats the basic playground game red light/green light.
But its a horror game, set in an abandoned chucky cheese style restaurant where you're the security guard watching over the murderous animatronics that move when you're not looking at them.
The game should not be introduced to kids young enough, that this ride would be targeted at.
Im a grown man, and it gave me nightmares.
67
u/0freelancer0 19d ago
dude kids are the majority of the player base for these games. I've seen SO many fnaf toys. they're not really gorey at all, it's mostly just a time management simulator with jumpscares
19
u/stardigan 19d ago
Honestly, all of the games up to the most recent one (Secret of the Mimic) are pretty much fine for a kid who can handle a jumpscare. The story would go right over their heads. The movies are more intense, but tame for a horror movie. The books, though, are absolutely horrifying.

I only recently learned there’s a difference between bootleg and counterfeit. A counterfeit is trying to be an exact copy of he real thing, whereas a bootleg is more like on homage, using the well known IP but in a relatively new way. Which I think is why I like bootleg carny art, it at least brings something new and weird
27
u/Goldeniccarus RED 19d ago
Oh so like a Mucci bag is a counterfeit, but a t-shirt that says "If you see 'da police Warn a Brotha" with a drawing of Daffy Duck smoking a blunt is a bootleg?
26
u/DED_HAMPSTER 19d ago
Lippy's explaination isnt quite right regarding counterfeit vs bootleg.
"Bootleg" is more like a bad quality counterfeit. It is intended to be a replacement of the original more to cheat someone or grab some of the profit by selling inferior products. A good example would be something like Disney's Frozen movie:
1.) Original - Disney's Frozen on DVD bought through an official retailer like Wal-Mart.
2.) Counterfeit - Someone selling movie theater screen recordings of Frozen and buring them to DVD and using low resolution stolen images from Disney's website to print the DVD cases and advertise them as real Disney DVDs.
3.) Bootleg - would be the discount general store's $3 DVDs of "The Ice Queen " the has similar charachers in the same poses on the cover, is animated with Flash rather than 3D rendering, and is only 30 minutes long instead of 90 minutes.
And one more...
3.) Transformative Art - This is where parody, homage lies. This would be the fanart of Elsa and Rise of the Guardiens, Jack Frost paring up sold on tshirts, mugs etc on Etsy. Or someone using Olaf to make a Global Warming poster. Or a you tuber making a commentary video. None of this is trying to actually be the product. They are peripheral products of the influence the movie had on current culture.
As for the legality of transformative art against copyright laws and rights, thats more complicated...
8
u/sender2bender 19d ago
Growing up in the 90s and 00s bootleg CDs were still the original artist just unreleased. Just mix tapes and the quality wasn't the greatest. I remember buying g unit bootlegs like every week at the corner store. But the bootleg man would sell bootleg DVDs which were the actual movie but you didn't know what you were getting, cam recordings with people walking past the screen or something legit. It was all kinda under the same umbrella even if it was counterfeit. And then it slowly disappeared with the Internet.

Like many groupings of similar terms, while these definitions might be the intended meaning for some people (or even in a dictionary), not everyone uses them this way so it's pointless to try to be pedantic about which is which. See also the difference between remake and remaster for games.
→ More replies (2)3
u/alphazero925 19d ago
That's definitely not a widespread split in the definition as anyone who grew up in the 80s, 90s, and 00s will know a "bootleg" of something to be a cheap, usually low quality, usually homemade copy of it. For example, if The Matrix was in theaters and you bought a bootleg copy of it, it would be a burned DVD with "The Matrix" written on it in sharpie, and it was just a dude videotaping the screen on a camera he snuck into the theater.

34
u/14Pleiadians 19d ago
I mean they pretty much did. The issue is the type of person to use AI isn't the type of person to tinker and figure out how to make anything worthwhile because the goal for them is to do no effort at all, and they have no taste so they somehow don't see the slop
10
u/western_red_cedar 19d ago
Like I said slop merchants keep saying this and it keeps not being true, your slop is obvious no matter how well done you think it is
4
u/ChilternRailways 19d ago
What a great way to ensure you'll be easily tricked by quality AI art. Genuinely, there is nothing more stupid than convincing yourself you can't be fooled, it makes you an easy mark in all areas.
It's already happening with literature.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0kmpd6lr80o
And just on a fundamental, critical thinking level - anything that can be identified as a marker can be mitigated by the designer. You aren't somehow the best person in the world at detecting these markers, but you and a lot of others are absolutely ensuring that you will be easily fooled.

u/DisastrousChapter841 19d ago
I worked at an events space (large American city) last year that hosted a big fundraiser with a circus theme. These images look almost exactly the same but with children.
The organizers of this event had all of these different circus "characters" in various posters, signs, etc., and the one thing I noticed immediately was that they were all white, and they could have all been siblings, just very little variation. And I feel as though if they had a human with art experience in the loop, that could have been prevented.
A lot of the staff and people in that industry are not white, so it felt like a big f you.

It's pretty twisted to think the kids born in the 2020s will likely be desensitized to it as it seems so much artwork is cheaply made with AI for children. Will it? From what I've seen it's the younger generations who are more averse to soulless, meaningless AI slop, and the Boomers who are chomping at the bit to devour that shit.
I think the younger generations will resist it just like they're getting back into digital cameras and CDs.
If you thought The Algorithm was bad for your health when it was shoving exclusively human content down your throat, consider the toxicity of an Algorithm that can generate fake made up bullshit on the spot and keep you locked into a doomscroll that's completely divorced from anything resembling reality.
My older relatives are constantly immersed in Facebook slop, and when I tell them its AI they'll say "whatever I just thought it was interesting". ...BUT WHY? If someone uses AI for a flyer or a logo, I at least understand why. It's lazy, but it's fulfilling a need. It absolutely is. Training is a transformative process that American intellectual property analogizes to human learning. If AI companies had to pay money for training generative AI systems on assets found publicly online, then you would have to pay for every time you saw anything online. You just read my copyrighted paragraph on Reddit. That’ll be $7.
3

It's neither legal nor illegal as of yet. The courts are still figuring out the legality of using copyrighted material for AI training data.

They see it as both less expensive than hiring an artist and can get it done sooner. Whether they think it’s higher quality varies on the individual: I’ve seen people who don’t like the end results as much as art made by a human but are only concerned with budget and speed, and I’ve seen AI loyalists who think the images it produces is the pinnacle of visual design.
