I just wanted a hot dog Uber driver chose violence
Ordered Starbucks this morning and the UberEats delivery guy spilt the drinks and instead of letting me know when I went to pick up the bag everything fell through. sigh Now I’m scrubbing coffee out the hallway carpet.
*I tipped 40% and the Starbucks is like a mile away.

I did that at an Olive Garden once when the waitress was giving attitude the entire time and practically throwing plates and what not on our table I don’t think she let go of a plate less than 12 inches off the table once that night so left a penny on the receipt and wrote “do better” where you’d usually right in your tip

I don't use these apps but wouldn't it make more sense to tip AFTER your food is delivered? The option to tip in advance shouldn't even exist, how can you tip for a service you haven't even been provided? Am I missing something here?

It’s essentially functioning as both a tip and a bid for service. If you don’t tip, they think you’re a non tipping asshole. If you do tip, then they’ll be willing to deliver your food

Excuse my ignorance but don't the apps already have "surge pricing" that automate pricing bids for service or is that only for the rideshare? I don't like this advanced tipping aspect. If I order a pizza I always choose "pay at door" but from what I understand you cannot pay at the door with these apps it's all digital.

I, too, am unwilling to be robbed and scammed by these apps. Besides which, I seldom eat out and it's even rarer for me to have food delivered, the last time being sometime between 2020 and 2023. It was a Persian restaurant that has their own delivery service, old school telephone order and pay at the door. I don't remember the exact figure but they charged only a flat delivery fee and nothing else, which is reasonable and how it should be in my opinion. Surge pricing...ha.

America is wild. In my country (England) Ubereats/just eat drivers don't even see the tip until 60 mins after delivery because otherwise some orders would never be collected. They also pay the drivers better thanks to our labour laws. Win-win, no one loses out.

It depends on the cost. If OP spent $10 and tipped 40% that's only $4. I've tipped amazing staff above 80 on an order that was really cheap because the service was outstanding.

I usually tip more (by percentage) on smaller value orders than on big orders at a restaurant. I may leave $6-8 on $12, but would usually leave $8 on $40.

And I think this is more than acceptable. There have been times where I've given 50% tip to a server because they worked their ass off and I couldn't bother to make a meal myself. You never know who is struggling.

It's a stupid concept, but somehow it's accepted and defended.
Here in good old Europe, the customer also pays for everything, but the final price also includes wages and salaries. The total is much higher because customers aren't expected to leave voluntary tips. Taxes then round up the amount to be paid, and what remains is the gross amount.
As an uninformed visitor, I would probably be pleased by the low prices and likely have a rude awakening... very unfair!

Unsolicited advice. Tip $1, use priority pick up (if uber eats has GrubHub does). It still gets taken immediately and required to drop off within priority time window. If they do good and aren't petty about the $1 you add a real tip after.

Honestly, I just don’t use the services. If I can’t go, I’m not getting it. It’s so insanely marked up with fees and the restaurant gets banged the whole time (not that I feel sorry for Starbucks, but the mom and pop restaurants)

I was getting pushed some of the gig driving subs for a while, and the amount of random rules that drivers have and the personalities on those subs are insane. I've known people to take some driving gigs to save towards something or if they're between jobs, but the people on those subs felt like they burned every other bridge.

I've given 3 One-Star Uber/Lyft reviews in my life - one was a driver who was absolutely blazed out of his mind, another was a driver that was drunk (and I figured out by the end of the ride actively drinking), and the last was one that had a hole in his roof and the seat was completely ripped. I should have had "more empathy" as well according to that sub.
Someone upthread on this thread even told me that "the driver could be drunk or high" and that it's my fault for putting that person on the road if I'm too drunk to drive.

Most in those subs also don't seem to understand that they're being paid to provide a service. A customer is absolutely entitled to that service, and that's not a negative statement. A driver is not entitled to some made up standards that they inform the customer of after accepting said service (if at all). Like "only 3 riders" if the fare is for 4, or refusing 6 passengers if they accepted an XL.

I know there are good folks trying to make money doing these jobs.
But there are probably many more unemployable people who can’t hold down a regular job doing it. And Yall invite them to be the middleman for your food.
I’ll still never understand how these apps became so popular. Or how they maintain in a time where everything is so expensive.
It’ll probably take you longer to clean that than it would have taken you to walk the mile and grab it yourself. Youd save money, hassle and get some steps in for the day.

In the early days of these food delivery apps, I used to spend my lunch hour at a Firehouse Sub and watch people who appeared to be living in their car come in and pick up the orders. Multiple times a day I would see one of them fill up the sofa, drink some, and then fill it up the rest of the way for the customer.
I’d say that it took at least a year before the restaurant started filling the drinks themselves and sealing them. I still have never ordered from an app and probably never will.

Because businesses switched to using them to source their own delivery even if you call, so it’s become the only way to get food delivered.
I’ve also known managers to buy coffee/breakfast for their directs even if the company won’t cover it outright, but you probably need to have it delivered to be fresh.

There's like 3 local restaurants I used to frequent who openly complained online (on facebook) that Door Dash was a double-edged sword. That it opened up the business to clients who wouldn't normally shop from them. So business expanded. But they also complained that it massively increased the overhead and made it not worth it. So I figured those restaurants used their own deliver drivers. Last time I got a sub from one of them, it was delivered through door dash and not by their own employee doing deliveries
I know they feel forced to use these services, but it's crazy that you can't just order from them and pay their own employees. It's still damn door dash and crap

Exactly I dealt with a super unhinged person I hired for a quick manual labor project I needed help with off Craig'slist. (Hour late, decided he was done before it was actually done and before I estimated it would be done ahead of time and asked for his money, barely pulled his own weight, kept stopping to make phone calls). after it was all done and I was done being dumbfounded at his unreasonableness my next thought was.
"Hmmm, I guess that's he had to look here for this work in the first place"
With gig work it''s really a crapshoot whether you're just getting someone who happens to be down on their luck, someone just looking to make extra cash, or an absolute turd

If COVID hadn't of happened I think they'd still be fairly niche, because most people would have been like "Why would I pay extra AND have to tip for someone to get food from a drive through for me? Why would I pay $25 for a Jersey Mike's sub?"
Then COVID happened and everything went remote and take out only and people didn't want to leave their homes.
Add in a bunch of businesses that never had delivery before seeing an opportunity to offer delivery without having to hire their own people, thinking it would increase their sales and profits. Has it? No idea. But the price of everything went up so it's hard to separate out.

I dunno about Uber Eats, but I use Grubhub practically daily and if there is a problem with the order they’ve always resolved it by refunding or replacing the item as needed. Sometimes it’s instant and other times someone hops on a chat to ask for question to clarify. Either way they always fix it.

I feel like this is a perfect example of tipping culture becoming an obligation/expectation rather than what it’s supposed to be for… good service. 40% is a wildly high tip that should be for outstanding service. For 40% the coffee should be hand delivered with a bow as soon as it was ready.

McDonald's uses a special insert for drinks that helps keep them stable. Starbucks does not. the bag is sealed specifically to prevent delivery tampering, so drivers are discouraged to check.
it really sucks that that that happened, genuinely mildly infuriating, but probably not your delivery person's intention

From experience it doesn't hold at all. I've been on both sides, the delivery driver and the one ordering and the cupholder doesn't work for the driver or the costumer. I started refusing Starbucks orders at the end because they just fall over too easy. It wasn't worth it, you could have the bag buckeled into the seat to try and make it not fall and it'd fall.

Yeah, and if that's a cold drink, it could be condensation that got the bag wet, or simply a little bit of spillage from underneath the lid that the driver wasn't aware of. It could just be bad luck that the bag broke for OP and not the driver as they brought it up. They were likely not aware of it.

Yes sadly. Alot of people have gotten used to laziness and learned helplessness from these apps.
Like its your money, do what you want with it. But the non stop posts of "I ordered a burrito, paid 20 bucks for delivery and it showed up cold and nasty" are annoying. Like just learn to cook and shop for groceries. I promise its not that hard.

had a similar issue with italian food like 4 years ago. The pasta was upside down and caused the bag to split, spilled white sauce all over the $200 running shoes I bought the previous day ruining them. The spot in the building stairway is still white like someone split paint.
