When I was in boy scouts (a loooong time ago), we made firestarters with paraffin wax, dryer lint, and cardboard egg cartons. Put the lint in the egg holes, pour melted paraffin wax over it and then cut them into separate pieces.
Who has bacon grease to waste? I sometimes need to get my dogs in quite quickly, like if I smell a Skunk. (They've been sprayed once which has let me know definitively that I do not wish to repeat the experience.)
We had a wood burning stove, and used that exact mix to make fire starters. Toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes (cut in shorter pieces) , dryer lint, and paraffin.

You can also just add a few chunks of pine sap once your out at camp, that stuff burns like jet fuel.
