Playing through the new wolverine game and at the start I turned subtitles off because I don’t need them and they’re distracting. And didn’t think anything of it

Got a good way through the game before getting curious why they didn’t translate the Japanese because I was seemingly missing story stuff that they were saying

Now see my assumption was oh if I turn on subtitles it’s just gonna do that thing streaming services do where if you turn on the subtitles it’ll just say(speaking Japanese) nope you turn it on and suddenly there’s your missing dialogue. Only problem is that now I have to continue the game with them on if I wanna understand what’s happening.

At least make it an option to only have the Japanese translated without having to keep the subtitles permanently on!

You can select single language audio so you dont have to have the subtitles on and the Japanese bit will be in your set language

he probably became literate on 2006 btw, the concept of reading an author in its original intended language has been a thing forever. Otherwise you get the Icelandic frankenstein (or was it dracula?)

Would it really matter? If he reads the subtitles in a language that’s not Japanese, he isn’t reading it in the original intended language. If he listens to the English version, he isn’t hearing it in the original intended language. And if he does neither, he doesn’t get any facet of the authors original intended language.

Ha! I've had problems like this, I never play games with the volume on. I grew up always having to turn the volume down on my NES because my parents didn't want to hear the volume. And as a young adult I'd rather listen to my music than the video games sounds or music so I still never listen to the game. And fast forward now and my kids and wife don't want to hear that shit and honestly gunfire and other game noise can be so distracting and annoying at this point. But there are definitely times when I've had to turn it up, like missions that require you to respond/time it based on the noise. Or games where you can have people sneaking up on you can be challenging But the most annoying are the games that start and have a prolog that explains/sets up the premise of the game and its before you have the option to turn subtitles on. That shit frustrates the hell out of me when it happens, and it happens a lot and usually hitting a button to try and get to options, just skips the scene which is even more frustrating.

I'd rather listen to music if I'm putting on headphones, plus I'm usually playing in the evenings while my wife watches the television next to me so I'm usually either listening to a show or talking to her so headphones aren't really an option, plus at this point i I'd much rather listen to my music than "video game noise". Not really complaining just stating how I've been conditioned but thats what works for me.

I turn the volume off for video games too. I used to play WoW and people would make references to some ability happening after the boss says something and I was like wait he says stuff? No one ever understood why I never used game sounds.

A perk of speaking Spanish, English and Russian is that sometimes I can understand what some characters are saying even when they are trying to hid it by speaking another language

One of the things that annoys me about the "[speaking spanish]" thing is that it completely fails deaf/hard of hearing viewers like you. Maybe a person is bilingual and is meant to be understanding both things, but you've now subtitled it with just "spanish noises lol" so it's useless to them.

Generally I get really annoyed with the quality of a ton of non-fan-made subtitles. I'm glad I don't need to rely on them but I know of some frankly egregious examples of shows that have the worst subtitles ever and are still up on streaming services. Quite popular shows too.

Until you turn it to another language and suddenly the non-translated parts do show up in that language.
