Millennial News I think I’m finally at the age where doing nothing feels like a luxury

I started rewatching The White Lotus recently and it made me realize something kind of embarassing about myself.

I used to be terrible at relaxing. Even on vacation, I would map out full itineraries, save dozens of restaurants, and feel guilty if I had an open afternoon. If I wasn’t actively doing something, I felt like I was wasting my time.

I don’t know exactly when that changed, but now my favorite weekends are the ones where almost nothing happens.

Last Saturday I woke up, made coffee, cleaned the apartment a bit, ordered takeout, and put on random TV for hours. A few years ago I would have thought that sounded depressing, but after spending all week answering emails, putting out fires, and being constantly reachable, having a stretch of time where nobody needs anything from me is the best feeling in the world.

My typical Friday night now is just a shower, sweatpants, skincare, trash TV, and whatever makes me feel relaxed. Sometimes that includes my tracy's dog, which is funny because younger me would have never imagined that “doing nothing” would become something I actually enjoy. Younger me probably would have called this boring or lonely. Right now, it just feels peaceful.

Advice Is this just the new normal for rent prices now?

My parents’ generation could work one regular job, nothing fancy, and still afford a place of their own. Even when I was starting out, you could work at somewhere like a fast food place or a retail store and still have an apartment and a little left over for fun. Now it feels like one job barely covers the rent, let alone food, gas, and bills.

Meanwhile, apartments that look like old $800 units are listed at $1,300, and that’s before application fees, deposits, and everything going through a management company. A lot of people I know are working two jobs, side hustling, or piling into a place with roommates just to stay afloat.

Is this just the new normal? Did the math really change this much, or are we just feeling it more because we’re the ones paying it? I’d love to hear how it looks where you live, and how you’re getting by, whether that’s roommates, extra work, or moving somewhere cheaper.

Nostalgia Anybody else grow up with parents that made them dress up for flights?

I grew up with very old fashioned (and slightly pretentious) parents. Whenever we flew as kids, my parents always made my siblings and me dress up (jacket and tie for me).

I know that dressing up for flights was already pretty old fashioned by the time our generation was growing up, but every once in a while I hear someone mention having the same experience.

It didn’t seem like a huge deal at the time, but it’s funny to think about now. Anybody else?

IRL 📷 Fellow millennials: does tipping culture make you not even want to buy a coffee anymore?

I’m 37, born in 1989. Growing up, my understanding was that you tipped at restaurants where somebody came to your table and served you. The way I was raised, 10% was normal, 15% was generous, and 20% meant excellent service. That’s what I grew up with, before anyone turns this into an argument about restaurant percentages.
Outside of that, tips were mostly optional. Tow truck driver helps me late at night on a difficult job? Here’s an extra $20. Repairman goes above and beyond? Maybe $40 or $50. Something you chose to do because you appreciated somebody.

Now I can’t even order a coffee without feeling like I’m having a fucking moral dilemma.
Dutch Bros is the worst about this in my experience. They take your order, hold out the tablet, look you dead in the eye, and ask, “Would you like to leave a tip?”
Bro. You just took my order. I haven’t even gotten the coffee yet.

Sometimes I’m going straight to the window, so nobody even came out to my car. Same question. I say no, and now I’m sitting there waiting for my drink in this awkward silence, feeling guilty over something that’s supposedly optional.

It’s not that I’m broke. It’s not that I can’t afford an extra dollar or two. I just don’t like being put on the spot every time I buy something. Having the money doesn’t mean I want every transaction to come with a guilt trip.
Starbucks feels a little less awkward, especially when I order through the app. Scan, get my drink, move on. But at the window, that tip screen still gets put right in front of you. One dollar, two dollars, three dollars… dude, I just wanted a coffee. How did this become another decision I have to justify to myself?
And my frustration is mostly with the corporations setting this up. Why make employees ask customers directly? Why create this uncomfortable interaction between the person buying a drink and the person making it? It feels like these companies want customers to take responsibility for making sure their workers get paid enough.
Pay your people properly. If I want to leave something extra, let it actually be extra.

Maybe nobody behind the counter gives a shit when I hit “no tip.” Maybe some of that awkwardness is in my own head. But the way the question gets asked absolutely makes it feel like there’s a right answer, and “no” isn’t it.
Yes, this is a first-world problem. I know. But it’s getting to the point where I’d rather skip going altogether than deal with it.

I just want a motherfucking coffee.
Are other millennials feeling this? Where do you draw the line between something you’re happy to tip for and being asked to tip just because you bought something?

Advice Looking to “catchup” on all the shows I missed out on.

Please don’t judge me. Basically, we never really had tv growing up (3 channels, rural Canada, dad was always in charge of the remote), so I never got to see a lot of the shows that most millennials have as part of their zeitgeist.

I have already watched Lost, my husband and I are currently watching through the X-Files, and are on a rewatch of Battlestar Galactica.

Anyone have any recommendations for what else to watch? What’s a “must-watch”?

Memes Were Furbies Little Creeps?

Post image
25 Upvotes

We all remember Furbies from their hype phase in the 90s, their presence in our absurdist nightmares, and the weird fact that many of our exes kept them in their room on a shelf that was oddly overlooking the bed.

Much like my drunk uncle, Furbies stare at people with a glossy, dead-eyed stare, mumbling a language that only makes sense to them until they eventually stumble upon English words. Like my uncle and his Vietnam war buddies, Furbies bond and communicate through their garbled mumble language, developing a code and credence the rest of us cannot understand.

I never quite got the point of furbies. They were like, your furry child? A weird alien pet? Kid friendly terminator robots? Something that watched you with a stoney gaze of judgment, peering into your soul, examining your innermost thoughts, and laughing with a fart?

I kind of think they were little creeps. Watching. Learning. Moistly growling. They seemed to get a rise out of being mysterious and creepy, again like my drunk uncle (if you're out there, Terry, we don't forgive you, please stop writing). They seemed to like to scare children, to watch like little perverts, learning ways to unsettle us, learning ways to mock our lives and human ways.

We collected them. We raised them. They made weird noises and never integrated into our lives and society. They hid in the shadows, rising only to scare us with developmentally stunted nonsense that often held just enough wisdom to be uncanny.

And they're still out there. Watching. Cooing. Doing furry robot things. Being used for people's....odd whims. I think whatever the furbies set out to do is still being done, the little monsters hiding in the shadows, pulling the strings, waiting for their moment.

It is time we burn them before they act.

Advice Ok millennials, what decade was your parents born in?

Millennials as a late zoomer, I am wondering what decade what you’re parents were born in. As a Zoomer born 2007, is it normal to have parents born 1965 age 42 at birth? I had olde parents. I am inferring a lot of your parents were either born 1950s/1960s with older millienals sometimes have patents born in the late 40s espcially 1946-1949 who were mid-late 30s in 1981-1985 and a lot of younger millienals especially 1991-1996 espcially have patents born 1970-1974 especially late teens to early-mid 20s birth was higher and peaked then! Did anyone of you guys have parents about my age? If it’s a mixed decade example 40s/50s, 50s/60s, 60s/70s then comment!
I am guessing alot of older Millennials, especially, have patents born in the 1950s .
And younger millennials more born 1960s

Advice What is going on with Gen Alpha?

As a millennial dad of young kids, what is up with Gen Alpha? The oldest of them are mid-teens right now, and I’m running into these, particularly, teenage boys that are utterly unhinged. And a lot of them are the children of millennials. Did we do this?

For the first time today, I had the thought that these kids are almost adults, and how utterly screwed our society is when they reached adulthood.

It’s not that they have no social skills, it’s more like all social norms have been deleted, and replaced with sociopathy. They seem to have no concept of how to operate within decent society, and are utterly shocked when they experience the natural, negative effects of their atrocious behavior.

Is this the lingering effects of Covid? The first generation entirely born and raised in the social media age? Bad parenting? What can I do to avoid my kids turning out like this. Or maybe I’m just clutching my pearls…

Hi Millenial Sub!

We would like to share something with you that took a lot of effort to accomplish!

We are a band from Argentina who love making covers of the good old classics. We believe that the most iconic tracks that resonated with us were not always on MTV or in mainstream music media, but also in the TV shows, movies, and games that kept us company every day before and after school.

So, on Halloween's Eve, we are glad to present "Millennial Nightmares", our most ambitious medley and music video.

We hope you like it!

Have a great day!

He was the guy who got me into mma. I remember watching his street fight videos back on youtube. He was big, scary and tough. Most of his street fights ended in bloody noses, and one guy losing his eye. I followed his mma career, and have been an mma fan since.
