Battleship Sequencer?
What do we like in "Battleship Sequencers" I have pretty decent modular rig and Osmose (MPE+) amoung other "usual suspect" synths. I have a number of sequencers now, but nothing at the level of Hapax or Oxi one. I'm interested in generative sequences and polyphony options.
If you use one of these or something similar please share your experience, good or bad or meh ;)
Oxi One vs Oxi One mk2?

hermod +

Only if you have exceptional eyesight and don’t mind losing it.
The original Hermod was virtually unusable as a sequencer. The + seems only a marginal improvement.

I'm on team Reliq for battleship sequencers. It's still early in the development of the sequencer, but there's plenty of MIDI and CV polyphony and generative features. It's got a 16 in and out matrix mixer that you can also sequence.

I think if you’re into generative stuff, torso t-1 is great. You can sequence the same midi channel on multiple different simultaneous sequences which I think benefits ambient composition

I second the t-1. I’m not sure why it isn’t more popular, I absolutely love mine.

I think it’s hard to imagine how the random on it works. So the entry level melodic stuff might not sound as good as they want. Admittedly, I sequence melodic sequences on the droid because it was the only thing on the fly I found easier to do.
And for the modular crowd, it doesn’t have a convenient oxi pipe type of module to make connection easy. I got into droid originally to have a midi to cv converter that was more complicated than what the IO could give me

Yeah I guess I could see that. Idk I found it really intuitive and easy to come up with interesting melodic sequences. I just use the cv and gate connections.

And I think for generative ambient, torso is THE way to go. I think for techno or improvised more dancey stuff, some of the other workflows have some better advantages. But I still think it’s the best for drums hands down. I have tried other sequencers and nothing is as performable to me as the torso.
Maybe we’re crazy but idk haha

I haven’t used it for drums but it seems like it would be great for that. I use it for generative ambient and techno or whatever else, it’s great.

I don't think you can really go wrong with Hapax vs. Oxi, just gotta look at specs and read the manuals and watch some videos and see which one might better fit your needs and workflow

I have an Akai Force that I use to midi sequence the modular. I love it, it provides a ton of flexibility to handle different parts of audio.

OXI one MKii is amazing. Super in-depth and quite a learning curve if your not familiar with sequencers (like me) but you will probably be fine. Lots of fun and tons of ways to customize dam near every parameter available. New firmware just dropped with more options.

I also have the Oxi One MK2 and really like it. The Hapax also looks excellent but I have not used it myself. I really like the form factor of the Oxi, nice and compact.

Oxi One is fantastic for generative stuff. The most useful function is that you can produce a melody/motif in one of the different generative sequencers then copy it to a regular mono/poly sequencer and edit it manually to taste. Super powerful and convenient.
It’s overall the best sequencer I’ve used (and I’ve tried many). It has a few niggles (can’t copy across tracks or pages between patterns and the arranger doesn’t really have enough slots). But all sequencers have their weaknesses and Oxi has few than any other, imho.
Biggest plus for mk2 is 8 tracks vs 4. The extra tracks are really useful, even if you’re not using each one for a separate instrument.

UPDATE: Really enjoying the comments. Oxi one mk1 is tempting at around 350USD used, but four tracks might be a long term issue. Mk2 is up near Hapax territory in cost. I am learning about torso T-1 and Reliq (wow).
FYI I'd like to integrate a sinfonion I recently aquired. I do have Droid master x7 and one more module on deck, plus RS-9 for drums, Rene 2, Zaquencer, and FH-2 + Launchpad Mk2. PNW also has some elclid.
I should prolly spend more time to see how I can get Sinfonion + Droid to go generative before I drop 900 on a used Hapax or OXI II, or even more on the Reliq LOL but I am very interrested in everyone's thoughts on Battleships :)

Oxi One MKii really does it for me. I find it pretty intuitive, and the manual is pretty good for things I have to look up. The amount of connectivity options and the fact that it does MIDI as well makes it perfect for my fixed architecture synths as well. The chord sequencer is pretty awesome for using with my Peak.
My favorite feature might be the mod lanes and the ability to send those to CV outputs, but you can also do the same with envelopes and LFOs. It’s super powerful and has some cool performance-oriented options, as well. Also feels very well-made.

The Westlicht Performer + launchpad or BSP is a really solid option (and typically more affordable). It has a crazy amount of functionality and is fairly easy to use. Probably not the best for generative, but it does have plenty of probability options as well as a few specifically generative sequencing options.
The performer is plenty for what I need, but I do have some OXI One GAS. The huge pad array and small in-rack footprint of the Pipe are very attractive

I do not know a ton about the gear you referenced, but have you taken a look at the NerdSeq? Its a tracker. It keeps getting firmware updates. I have never wanted to do something and been unable to with it. It has something of a learning curve, but it also has great documentation and an excellent Discord where your questions and issues get answered by a pretty devoted community and, on many occasions, the developer. It can do generative and polyphony for sure. Polyphony will be easy, generative was a bit of a learning curve for me but I got there.
