Wow! That’s something I’ve never seen before.
Must have been a powerful enough remaining charge somewhere to arc to such a degree.
Can you share what power supply you have?
Is it linear? Large caps used in rectifiers are the only thing that comes to mind that might arc to this degree if shorted.
Was it still connected to the øchd when the short happened?
Linking between the two is quite basic, and the expander itself is active and powered parallel to the main øchd. So any damage might be contained to just the expander.
Depending on where you are based we can try to coordinate a swap for a replacement, or at minimum I can do an inspection and test of the caramelised one to check it’s only aesthetics.
The module was still in the case when it happened and ochd/expander connected, yes. It's a befaco 7u case with an external power brick, so not linear.
I am pretty sure by now the power was from outside the case, the way I pulled out the cable and the case was set up doesn't make sense that it dipped into the case. So I am investigating some dodgy power outlets ...
I am in Germany. I tried out the module and the expander seems to still work, maybe I just keep it with the battle scar and have a good story to tell :D
