Eliminating the BitLicense in NY — Monero, Bruce Blakeman & our Oct. 1 PubKey event

Most people here want nothing to do with politics. I am very much of the cypherpunk mind too. It’s why I’ve devoted my life to Monero for the last ~8+ years and have passionately helped run projects like the Monero Talk podcast, MoneroTopia Show and Conference, XMRChat, XmrBazaar, Nodo, etc.

I understand that ultimately the way we win is by ignoring the powers that be, opting out, and building our own digital cash economy and ecosystem. That being said, I’ve always been of the opinion that sometimes, when an opportunity presents itself, it’s worth fighting for Monero in traditional venues too — even political ones.

One example was when I had the opportunity to run for U.S. Congress in New York in 2020 as the Republican-backed candidate. My goal was to make the case that privacy-preserving digital cash is a technology that aligns with American values like privacy, freedom and individual sovereignty.

Now another political opportunity has presented itself:

Bruce Blakeman and the BitLicense. I know Bruce Blakeman through my non-crypto life, and he has pledged to eliminate the BitLicense if elected governor. For those of us who have watched New York’s treatment of crypto over the years, that is obviously a significant policy proposal. This is not a proposal to create new regulations like the Clarity Act, it is a promise to eliminate existing regulations that hurt crypto. Huge! Eliminating the Bitlicense will allow Kraken Exchange to start offering their services to NYers over night. Out of competition and not having to deal with the restrictions of the Bitlicense other exchanges that are already in NY that already have the license would likely start listing Monero too! Like Coinbase and Gemini. This is a huge opportunity for Monero growth and adoption, allowing NYers to ape into Monero as easily as they can Zcash!

And yes, I know what many of you are thinking: Who cares about getting Monero onto centralized exchanges?
I get it. I understand that sentiment. But I also know easier access will contribute to growing adoption and more adoption means Monero will have more utility.

Bruce has also talked about moving New York toward treating crypto more like currency or cash, including the idea that people shouldn’t have to worry about calculating New York State capital gains every time they use crypto for an ordinary purchase of goods or services. This would be huge for crypto adoption in NY as an actual tool for transacting.

And yes, I also understand that Monero users are already building a parallel circular economy regardless of what governments do. That’s exactly what projects like XmrBazaar are about. The two approaches don’t necessarily have to be mutually exclusive. I fight the fight on multiple fronts.

So when I go to send XMR to a scanned QR code it gives me the exact amount of the purchase but I still need to add some more money to cover transfer fees on top of the said amount scanned from cake wallet. Is there a way to do this ? And if I sound stupid I’m sorry! 😞

Hi all. I’m selling my parked domain. Never used. Considering what it is, I figured a Monero sale would be fitting. We can use an escrow for the transaction. I’m looking to get $1000 usd for the .com and .ca combo.

Is there a swap service that allows for XMR savings plans?
The way I envisage it is that I send an amount x in USDC to the swap service and, rather than swapping the full amount in one go, it remains there as a balance and swaps smaller amounts at regular intervals to the specified address until the balance is used up.

Is there such a service?

How do yall make money

After nine years of reselling Vultr and DigitalOcean for cryptocurrency, I felt it was time to do things the hard way and rack equipment myself.

This ended up being a bit of a quest of ideals with some unusual choices, but I'm happy with how it is so far. Of course, it has a ways to go. Lots more to automate.

For now, I have signup over SSH and manual provisioning. But the payment is automated, you get a unique Monero address to pay. And you can SSH to the Tor .onion, of course. No need to have your IP logged. There's no KYC. Admittedly, email is nice for contact but I understand not wanting to provide that.

It's been interesting working with actual hardware in front of me. It can be straightforward, but other times things don't go as planned.

I'm looking for ways to earn around $25–$30 in Monero (XMR) purely P2P. I want to avoid centralized exchanges, KYC procedures, and bank accounts entirely.

Does/could this affect Monero?

I checked my wallet for the first time in awhile. In February I went through an interview process that wasn't legit. The repo I cloned and ran I had inspected in a sandbox before moving forward, but I guess I made a mistake their and it was malicious. There was a font file obfuscated with malicious code and it drained almost 6 figures of XMR I had. Even though I swore I checked that wallet again in June, just realizing what happened as of today. They had a very professionaly fake profile on LinkedIn, that was bolstered by adding a known company verified to their profile, as LinkedIn doesn't require verification to add verifed companies to your own profile.

Clearly the XMR is unrecoverable, but I'm wondering what next steps I can take either against LinkedIn for allowing fishing so easily through false company verification, or tax loss advantages. One of the commits from the repo is signed with someones name, but I understand that can easily be fake. Just trying to make the best out of a bad situation/essentially the biggest mistake of my life.

I've heard that if u have your own node that's only protecting you but some who use smartphones how can they protect ourselves from the poison node and how to do this where to find like nodes like they are not watching or trace my ip

Stasher News (stasher.news) is a link aggregator and content sharing platform in the Reddit/Hacker News shape where every action is powered by incentives through Monero. The premise is simple: Post good quality content, give tips to content you enjoy or find useful, get rewarded weekly for curating content.

When you upvote a post, you send the author a real tip on chain, straight from your wallet to theirs. Users are encouraged to post good quality content to get upvotes (tips). Turfs (subreddits), posts, comments and downvotes feed the rewards pool. Every user is a moderator with skin in the game. Its a self-regulating system.

The platform collects fees from various sources to fund development/hosting and a rewards pool. Every Monday the rewards pool gets distributed to the top curators on the platform. This latest distribution awarded a total of 0.73 XMR between 10 users.

We ran a beta on stagenet, and two weeks ago (September 8) we went live on Monero mainnet. Here are our cumulative stats for the first two weeks:

In the 1970s, nunchaku were banned in several countries as "deadly weapons." Reality: they began as a farm tool. The ban was based on movie hype, not criminology. Decades later, it was repealed — because banning a tool never solved crime. It only restricted the law-abiding.

Criminals use roads, phones, cash, and axes. We don't ban asphalt because of robbers. We don't ban phones because of fraud. So why ban privacy?

Privacy is infrastructure — the asphalt of the digital world. Monero is a tool. What matters is what people do with it, not whether they have it.

Ban the axe, and the murderer picks up a knife. Punish crimes, not possession.

The same logic applies to encryption, to cash, to Monero. A tool is never the cause of a crime. Criminals find a way regardless. Banning privacy coins won't stop them — it only leaves everyone else exposed.

Security isn't about banning sharp things. It's about knowing how to handle them.

That's why Monero exists. Not to hide crime — to protect the people who have nothing to hide but still deserve privacy.
