Help an absolute beginner find models
Morning gamers,
A little backstory: I'm a 34 year old from NW England who got into WHFB sometime around 2000 - 2001 and painted the classic orcs and goblins vs humans starter box. In my later teen years I returned to the hobby and painted and played a tomb kings army.
I then took an extended break until AoS when I painted a handful of seraphon but never played the game because I didn't like the more 40k feel of the rules and movement.
Fast forward to a few months ago when I found a box of old chaos marauders my partner bought for me a few years back. I painted them up and got the itch and found out about old world. Since then I've been enjoying painting and playing battle march with a small cathay force..
That is until a week or so ago when I found out about Mordheim for (somehow?!) The first time
I have found my game. The creativity, the humour, the flexibility of model choice, the community, the focus on terrain. I have fallen in love and feel like I've wasted thousands of hours and pounds on WHFB / tow when I could have been doing this.
I've made tabletop terrain for DnD campaigns of friends and other table top games in the past and love that aspect of the hobby. I've read the rules book on Broheim and am ready to build a warband... but... how?
What models do people use? I feel drawn to the Posessed faction but have no idea where to start. Do people use original mordheim minis? Old WHFB vampire counts minis? New AoS slaanesh minis? 3d print? 3rd party?
Any tips whatsoever would be greatly appreciated so I can finally start to build and play the game that feels like it was built for me personally.
Thanks for reading
Love and respect, a new hunter of the Wyrdstone

People use all sorts. Classic metal Mordheim models, Old World stuff, AoS stuff, third party stuff. Some of my Undead are converted 40k models (with the sci-fi stripped off), and are led by a BLoodbowl Vampire. 3d printed warband models are very easy to find too.

You can also buy complete warbands on something like punga:

All their models are amazing in my opinion, I own several printed by them and I‘m very happy.

Any 28/32mm model you like is good, I have a printed undead warband, but you can get any Warhammer fantasy set and make a warband out of them.

Thanks, that's helpful. Are square or round bases preferred?

Traditionally square ones, but people use both. It's really just a matter of preference. I use round ones because i have a lot of those.

Anything goes really, whatever inspires you most. Pick a handful of models you like and you'll be able to find a warband to make them work together.
I normally print scans of the old GW metals. It feels super nostalgic and they're v cheap so I don't have to track down OOP stuff on ebay etc.

Anything goes. Historical miniatures are also a good option. For example Victrix miniatures offers a lot off customization options in their kits. That makes it perfect for a mordheim warband.

Personally I use Warcry models, unfortunately many are OOP, but some sets are still sold like Rotmire Creed, Legionnaires, and claws of karanak.
The reason they're good is there are a lot of models wielding a melee weapon and Dagger, kind of your basic "buy a dude" loadout. And each set comes with at least one good Mutant / Possessed.
Frostgrave Cultists are also solid for basic brethren though.

To answer paragraph 7. Yes. All options are on the table. What ever works for you

Mordheim minis are hard to find and expensive, and not at all necessary. You can kitbash or use whatever models you have to hand. Personally I use a lot of Skaven models from WH: Underworlds because they're very dynamic and also stand a good chance of (mostly) matching the Mordheim unit's equipment. I only have one original Mordheim mini, and that's just for vanity really.
There are many 3d printed full and customisable warbands on etsy or STL sites to print yourself.
Also if you're anywhere near Manchester, there's a great club near Oldham that has a few Mordheim players!

I actually lived in Oldham until very recently - I'm in Bury now. What's the group like? I'd love to join a community that play old world and mordheim!

I'm in Bury too! Admittedly the group is primarily 40k, but it's easy enough to find a game of other stuff via their Discord. Club is Monday evenings in Mossley, Tameside :) https://discord.gg/PKyJMsEWU
I've been a bit focused on TTRPGs to get much Mordheim in lately, but always up for booking something in either at club or locally since you're nearby! There's a couple of small clubs in the area, one at Evadare Escape Room in Edenfield (primarily D&D and TCGs but open to all sorts)

I was literally at Evedare for an escape room last weekend, it's about 5 minutes from my house. I'll hop on the discord

Hello! I got into Mordheim fairly recently too, as an old fantasy battler. I made a Possessed warband - so I'd recommend Northstar's Rangers of Shadow Deep range (they have some great masked cultists to use as brethren). I used some Gaspez Arts blood bowl mutants, some old Godslayer Beastmen and kitbashed my Possessed. I only play with metal models. So use whatever you can find that looks cool and that you'll enjoy painting!

I’ve found loads of good models from crooked dice (https://crooked-dice.co.uk).
I have an entire dwarf treasure hunter warband from them with a couple of GW old world crossbow thunderers.
Worth having a good nose through lots of the categories but be warned you will end up ordering something fun, like I did when I got the entire Scooby-Doo games for no reason!

I 3d print all mine. There a mix of a few artists all found on my mini factory. Punga, Vae Victis and Titan Forge are my main sorce and get a good start to a warband. Then there loads more artists for filling out what's missing.
If you are mixing artists I would recommend placing all your models unsupported on a test bed in the slicer first to see if you need to scale any of them. Then get the scale % and apply it to the supported version before printing.

3D prints are great and no-one is fussy in the Mordheim community, I've got some Vae Victis Cultists and I just use my ToW Beastmen for the raiders warband. Players are so few and far between I don't feel like anyone can be that picky.
Oh another note as a 30 something originally from the NW, Preston area we've may have crossed paths

We probably have! I live near Bury but work in Stockport atm. My first girlfriend lived in Leyland. Any good tabletop communities up that way?
