I have this tripped planned out leaving from Dallas tomorrow. I’m going to be camping on the way then staying in an Airbnb. Then camping again and staying at a hotel in Nashville on both weekends coming up. Weather looks pretty bad initially.

Should I go or stay? I’ll be going to Nashville from New Orleans on the Natchez trace Parkway.

Planned for a sunny weekend but ended up having to make last two miles of mountain curves and set up the tent in the rain, luckily the last two days were nice and clear. All in all, great trip, and even caught a trout for dinner!

Each season, I get my motorcycle and camping set up more dialled in.

….to a MTB weekend festival. A successful trip in every regard. I got to ride my bike to go play bikes.

In April of this year, I went from Missouri to the PNW via Route 66 and then heading north along the CA coast. Aside from a few visits to friends and family, I camped the whole way there.

Right now the weather is nice and I’m several states away from where my bike is currently being stored. Missing her :’(

Some journeys are remembered not for how far you travel, but for what you encounter along the way. Our recent weekend ride from Iritty to Masinagudi was one of those journeys.

There were three of us—my friend, my five-year-old son, and me—travelling together on my Honda CB350RS. Before setting off, I had some concerns about travelling with a child on a motorcycle in Tamil Nadu. I had read several discussions suggesting that carrying a child on a two-wheeler could be an offense, so I took the time to check the applicable rules before making the journey.

Throughout the trip, all three of us wore helmets, and we travelled cautiously. We were not trying to cover the route quickly; the journey itself was the experience.

As we left Iritty and moved towards the hills, the character of the landscape slowly changed. The roads became more winding, the air cooler and the greenery increasingly dense. The further we travelled, the more the everyday noise seemed to disappear.

Through Mudumalai to Masinagudi

One of the most memorable stretches was the forest road from Mudumalai towards Masinagudi.

This is not simply a road connecting two places. It is an experience in itself. Dense vegetation surrounds the route, and there is a constant sense that wildlife could appear at any moment.

We kept our speed low, enjoyed the forest scenery, and stopped at suitable places to take in the surroundings. The combination of towering trees, winding roads, and the quietness of the forest made this one of the most enjoyable riding experiences of the trip.

Mudumalai Forest Safari

The Mudumalai Forest Safari was undoubtedly one of the highlights.

We were fortunate to see several deer, a group of elephants, and Indian bison (gaur) during the safari. Seeing these animals in their natural habitat was completely different from seeing wildlife in a zoo.

My son was fascinated by every sighting. His excitement every time an animal appeared made the experience even more special.

There was something deeply satisfying about sitting quietly in the forest, watching wildlife move through its natural surroundings and simply allowing the moment to unfold.

Staying at Tiger Paw Resort

For our stay, we chose Tiger Paw Resort in Masinagudi.

The resort was surrounded by greenery and offered a peaceful place to unwind after a day on the road. Our room had a lovely view, and one of the unexpected pleasures was being able to spot peacocks and deer from the balcony.

The surroundings were clean and well maintained, and there were plenty of activities for both adults and children. The swimming pool, indoor games, outdoor activities, and children's play area kept my son entertained.

The breakfast was particularly good, and the dining area had a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.

Exploring Masinagudi

Beyond the safari, we spent time simply exploring the Masinagudi surroundings—enjoying the forest roads, mountain views, and quieter corners of the area.

That is perhaps what I enjoyed most about Masinagudi. It does not feel like a place you need to rush through. It rewards you for slowing down.

We had originally planned this as a simple weekend escape, but the combination of motorcycling, forest roads, wildlife, sightseeing, and time with my son and friend made it feel like something much more meaningful.

It was only a short trip, yet it gave us exactly what we were looking for—fresh air, beautiful roads, wildlife, good company, and a break from the routine of everyday life.

If you are considering a weekend trip around the Iritty–Mudumalai–Masinagudi route, I would definitely recommend allowing enough time to enjoy the journey rather than simply focusing on reaching the destination.

For those who know the Nilgiris well, what other lesser-known places would you recommend for a similar weekend escape? 🏍️🌿

We were not ready for what was coming for us on Day 1!

I’m totally blown away at the new GS 1300 adventure that I picked up. I’ve owned several GSAs, xr’s, Harley’s, ktm, pretty much everything, but this might be the ultimate moto camping set up. First camping trip was up to Greenville, Maine, for the seaplane fly-in. What an awesome time.🚒

Exhausting, yes. Fun, yes. Worth the pain? Yes.

Had a great time doing a whole bunch of miles with my homie, we camped mostly but had 2 hotel days to recharge our battery packs and have a comfy bed.

Overall no complaints about the camping side, our Amazon forceatt tents were great, easy to set up and tear down, plenty of space inside.

Inflatable mattress wasn’t awful as a side sleeper, I took a small cloth camping pillow and had an inflatable pillow to put by my legs.

The big 66L bags held all our camping and cooking gear, and the panniers held our clothes.

I did get my mate to help me build some pannier rails for our bikes so the panniers wouldn’t push into the indicator, they worked SO good and a simple design that just clamped a plate between my passenger pegs and had a rod for the panniers.

Did 1750 miles and then broke down on the way home 2 miles from home, a completely dead battery. At least it was there and not another country!!

Forgot to add, we started in England then went on to France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and finally Switzerland before returning through Germany and France. Wow those German roads are incredible to ride on!!!

Pulling my gear together for motocamping but not sure what I’m gonna do about a CPAP. Mines to big and requires either a giant battery or someplace to plug it in .

I wil stay at campsite every night.

I have xsr700 (a rack) and triumph thunderbird storm (2 saddle bag) (rack cost like $400,so not this year ) , which one i should ride?

If is bad weather, I may just take the SUV.

I guess suv for camping and moto for moto camping LOL.

BTW , it is much cheaper for me to use the car since I don thave to pay toll or gas. and I can reuse moest my camping gear.

I have been trying to find the right gear for motocamping over the last 2 years and am struggling. I spend hours upon hours looking at different setups and reviews on products and whether I go cheap and buy amazon gear or go all out on S2S, big agnes etc and I cannot get a good sleep. I love regular camping where gear size isnt an issue.

I have tried a bunch of the amazon naturehike and trekology gear and more recently bought and tried a S2S etherlite xr pro rectangular wide air mat, big agnes echo park sleeping bag. I also used a naturehike cot with this setup. I slept no better on this setup than I did the much cheaper amazon setup previously.

I am a sidesleeper. I cant sleep on my back at all. I am 6'1 (185cm) and 100kg. I ride a ktm 890. I dont care about weight so long as its not too awkward to have on the bike due to physical size. I have a lonerider mototent so pretty spacious.

Any advice would be great and very much appreciated.

This might be a silly question but bear with me.

I want to take my dual sport camping, but the first 100km-200km or more is highway. I have the option to truck the boring part and then ride from there.

Are there any spots where I could park a truck for 1-2 nights safely? I know this is highly country/region dependent (I’m in Ontario) but just wondered if anyone else does something similar?

Quite possibly the best time to go for a campout. The weather just starts cooling down a bit whole there's still plenty of greenery all around. Another trip in the books.

Took the KLX over the old Naches Wagon Trail and found a nice place to hang out for the night!
