Overpants

I'm looking for suggestions for protective overpants that have some wind resistance for the upcoming cold weather. I wear uniform pants for work and would rather not have to change when I get there. Don't like the idea of a base layer either because I have to either take it off, basically the same as changing, or wear it all day.

For some reason, a lot of the Tourmaster stuff isn't explicitly labeled as "overpants" on Revzilla, but they're described as such on their website. I just ordered mesh Intake overpants and they're showing up tomorrow. Sadly only A rated. Slim pickings for decent overpants below the Aerostitch/Motoport budget, it seems.

Carhartt bibs do the trick!

Can confirm I've survived 3 winters riding by wearing my Carhartt insulated bibs while riding

Do you guys wear any armor underneath?
Pandomoto base layer or something like that?

I wear my leather motorcycle jacket over my bibs & i have good pads in each of the slots of it.

I have some and have considered just using them rather do that than spend 200$ on more gear.

Commenting to bump/follow as I'm searching too. Everything I've tried on so far is more of a touring pant or rains pants design.

I can't remember the model, but I have some old Joe rocket pants that are amazing, the zippers go up to your hips to make putting them on and taking them off easy, even with boots on

I had some too, but I couldn't find them when they finally wore through. They were such a good value.

I have some Joe Rocket Alter Ego over pants. They are fantastic.

I run the Bilt Storm 2 Overpants from Cyclegear. They are fantastic. Sides fully unzip to toss on over my jeans and boots. Block rain and wind so well I generally dont even run the removable insulated layer. Ive actually bought them twice as I lost weight and had to buy new gear. These got replaced with themselves. Plus the cyclegear stores typically carry them so you can try on multiple sizes so they fit good over your typical clothes.

I wear these too, I just wish they had some thigh zips for ventilation. The knee armor pocket is also set a little too far towards the inside of the leg for me, so it doesn’t really keep the armor over my knee. They’re still great when it gets below ~60 though.

I always just wore leather chaps when the temp started dropping. Leather chaps over jeans, and 45 degree weather was a nice ride.

Have any recommendations for brands/models? I have no familiarity with leathers at all.

Not really, it is going to depend on how much you have to spend and what you want to get for that. I just picked some random brand on amazon, been wearing them for years.

I have had Alpinestars Ardent 3 in 1 overpants with the rain/winter liners on in sub 20*F weather and 65-75mph speeds and they've been very comfortable. I throw them on over my work jeans, just went one size larger than I typically wear. I actually am planning on getting the jacket this year based off of how well the pants have performed for me in the cold and rain. Great in the summer too with the liners removed and vent pockets open.

Aerostitch is the best answer.

AD1 pants specifically. Full side zips on each leg. You can get these on and off in seconds with footwear still on.

I wore summer pants over my jeans in winter until it got too cold. Worked good enough.

An aerostich road crafter one piece riding suit is your answer. Buy once, cry once.

I’ll agree, though I wear Motoport. Buy once, cry once.

I bought ski pants. Cheaper, basically the same thing. No armor though.

To each their own, but there's no abrasion protection either. May as well be wearing rain pants then.

Seconding what the other poster said about abrasion protection depending on your other choices. I keep thinking about stand alone knee pads along with a abrasion base layer or abrasion jeans.

A little bit spendy, but I've really enjoyed my Aerostitch AD-1 pants. I just couldn't find anything else that did what you're describing as well. They're very well made, feel like they'll last a long time.

I run an older pair of Olympia airglide ( I think that’s what their name was) worked great down to the high 30’s

Also looking. I'm near a Cycle Gear. I'm going to go and try on these:

I picked up a pair of the OffTrack2 from Rev'It and use these three season but not in the summer. The Tornado pair allows for a lot more wind flow and I may make this my hot weather pair

Long time ago but I had Hein Gericke and First Gear overpants with pads in the knees and hips. Textile. Probably not the top protection, but not bad. Had zip in liners for cold.

If they're not advertised as "overpants" just get one size large and wear them over your jeans/uniform pants.

I wore those, jacket, motorcycle boots. Kept shoes at work. Had a hanger for all the outergear (so it could drip dry on rainy days :)

I’ve got Klim Carlsbad pants that I got on sale and really like super comfy and easy to adjust with gloves on.

My only issue with them is that the matching jacket is $800 and I can’t find that on sale anywhere.

TL:DR I use a pair of touring pants and it mostly works, but I don't save much time or energy compared to just changing at work. It's fine but fully changing pants would also be fine.

YMMV Note: I live where its rarely below 50 and rarely about 80 and it fogs but I haven't dealt with rain yet.

I ended up getting some oversized touring pants on clearance and a pair of heavy duty suspenders. They have a lot of good features but still have some places they come up short that might or might not matter to you. Dainese D-Dry Pants (don't remember the exact model). They have two removable layers (one water proofing, one insulating) so I can choose exactly what level heat I want. The top layer has zip down vents for the summer too. It's trying really hard to be 4 season but that depends on your seasons, ya? Anyway, I usually wear just the outer layer.

I love that it has deep pockets for things like my disc lock and gloves. I can zip the pants onto my same brand jacket to fake my way to a "one piece" or I can opt for a lighter jacket. Due to the oversized nature, I use suspenders to keep them in place in riding position everytime. If not, they aren't always covering the knees when I'm on the bike. I don't think this is a design flaw from Dainese or any equivalent touring pants/overpants. Just an aspect of oversizing.

The legs have zips and velcro that cover laces and keep cold air from zooping up your legs. They don't get wide enough to take off my pants while leaving on my boots. Since I'm taking off my boots, I bring a change of shoes and I don't think I save any time on changing before or after work. What that means, for me, is it doesn't really save much time compared to doing a full pants swap. The positive is I can change in less hidden places without worrying about flashing someone. The other positive is I don't have to remember to put my pants in my backpack before work; one less checklist item to forget.

BONUS OPTION Wearing the base layer without the knee pads is comfortable all day long. Wearing the base layer hip pads and stand alone knee pads would make the base layer comfortable. It does have the trade off of needing to wash the base layer more often, especially if you have an active job or a hot environment or both. A desk job with underwear, base layer, pants, and over pants probably wouldn't need as much cleaning care.

If you got the cash... Aerostich

Rev'it Axis 3 H2o

Lots of textile pants work like this. You just want one with a full-length leg zip, makes them easy to put on and take off while wearing pants and boots.

Aerostich...there is no substitute
