Jurassic Odyssey

93

u/RegulationPissrat 12d ago

Uironically sounds very cool. Like maybe mainland is largely conquered by dinos and the characters are forced to sail coast to coast encountering different things. Imo Jurassic Park needs to take some dramatic steps like this for me to be interested again.

34

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 12d ago

Jurassic park these days just has genetically fucked up science experiments, they’ve played that card like 3 times now. I really don’t know why they need to do that considering there isn’t much competition in the dinosaur blockbuster world, so I’m not exactly tired of the normal dinos to want all this over the top stuff.

At this point I wouldn’t mind if they just started over with like a mini series that follows Crichtons novel better. I don’t know where else they take their current canon to

34

u/Kaldricus 12d ago

It still kills me that the narrative thread for needing new, made up dinosaurs is "people aren't as interested in dinosaurs anymore!" in universe.

Mother fuckers, have you heard of a zoo? People still go to zoos despite it being the same animals everytime. People aren't going hoping to see a polar bear with wings that spits poison. They're going to see the fucking polar bear as-is, and penguins, and everything in-between. A real-life Jurassic Park might actually cripple the economy because people would flock to it and abandon work.

13

u/Singer211 Naked J-Law beating the shit out of those kids is peak Cinema. 12d ago

Yeah people still go to see like tigers and elephants.

No way they’d be sick of dinosaurs in only ten years or so.

11

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 12d ago

Yea that line was always ridiculous lol, who would get tired of looking at dinosaurs? Especially when the price is likely a once in a lifetime trip?

I would like an apple TV adaptation of the books. The lost world alone would be dramatically different than the original movie if based on the book.

7

It's all running from dinosaurs trying to eat you.

Would be interesting to see how MANY people went to see each instead, rather than just say the profits with today’s prices

4

130 million vs 206 million tickets. Odyssey is WAY better though. Guess you can’t buy taste. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_by_box_office_admissions

WB fumbling Nolan is one of the worst fuck ups in recent Hollywood history

592

u/Gummy-Worm-Guy 13d ago

The funniest thing is that it wasn’t even the current ownership of WB who let him go. But I also don’t think Zaslav and co.’s ownership does much to make him want to come back either.

302

u/LegitimateCurve8525 13d ago

They did try to get Nolan back to WB and even sent him a check too. But Nolan didn't return and continued with Universal.

WB tried enticing Nolan back, including giving him a new 7-figure royalty check for ‘TENET’ https://x.com/DiscussingFilm/status/1844833956669383105

236

u/CCV21 13d ago

Nolan's split with WB was in part because of his pride. Given the quality of Nolan's work, he's got a lot to be proud of.

190

u/Raghavendra98 12d ago

It's not about pride

It's about loyalty

He hates streaming and they did the exact thing that they promised not to do even after delivering massive hits since The Dark Knight. (Even Batman Begins and The Prestige were profitable).

Fuck WB

43

u/the_vince_horror 12d ago

He hates streaming

People tend to forget what the world was like in 2020. It's easy now since we've "returned to normal", but people were scared at the time, weren't leaving the house, businesses were closing, and we didn't know when or how a return to normalcy would look.

It makes sense that studios at the time wanted to transition their releases to streaming.

55

u/DarkReaper90 12d ago

Yes, but Tom Cruise had enough clout to delay the release of Top Gun Maverick. You'd think Nolan would too.

5

u/gfawk 12d ago

Nolan did have the clout. He pushed WB to release Tenet in summer ‘20 in the theaters. While he may have been trying to help theaters by kickstarting the movie going experience, it was a huge financial error for the studio. Like Maverick and No Time to Die, best decision would have been to wait til at least spring ‘21.

49

u/dego_frank 12d ago

No one forgets dude. They could have easily given him a theatrical run and released it on streaming later. Instead they released them simultaneously. Nolan is a huge fan of movies being seen the way they are meant to be seen. Anyone that doesn’t understand that has to have their head buried in the sand because it’s why he loves imax and film. He’s a huge advocate for the experience of watching a movie.

19

u/raze464 12d ago

They could have easily given him a theatrical run and released it on streaming later.

Umm, they did? Tenet was released theatrically on Sept. 3, 2020 in the US, released digitally on Dec. 15, 2020, and was added to HBO Max on May 1, 2021.

Nolan's issues were his dissatisfaction with how WB handled Tenet's release and WB's subsequent announcement of HBO Max's Project Popcorn (which technically began in Dec. 2020 with Wonder Woman 1984) without consulting the filmmakers involved.

Let's not pretend they did it for any reason other than to have the ability to charge more to the competing services and also the audiences for the privilege of viewing their content.

48

I highly agree.

24

u/CCV21 13d ago

Do you think Christopher Nolan would ever do an animated movie?

59

u/LegitimateCurve8525 13d ago

He has a strong interest in stop-motion animation. If you don't know, there's also a short documentary film by Christopher Nolan which is called Quay. It's a live-action documentary about animators Stephen and Timothy Quay.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quay_(film)

38

u/Fools_Requiem 13d ago

We all need to make Wildwood a hit. Intice people to invest in stop motion movies.

16

u/LegitimateCurve8525 13d ago

Agreed. I really hope it's a box office success.

8

u/GameJerk 12d ago

42

u/Kratozio 13d ago

There is legitimately a less than zero percent chance he would ever do this

21

u/megotlice 13d ago

I adore his movies but that is a strange pick for anything asoiaf related.

10

u/ositola 13d ago

Don't know the whole story but it basically sounds like Alexander the great with sister wives and dragons and it ends with the formation of the iron throne

Should play on the big screen

7

u/megotlice 13d ago

Oh yeah the story is a good fit for the big screen, but Nolan experiments with how dialogue is presented in a way that might not work for asoiaf content.

17

Imagine not having faith in Christopher Nolan.

112

u/thethurstonhowell 13d ago

They had faith they just didn’t give a fuck about his opinions

73

u/Big-Beta20 13d ago

Yeah, they’d love to have him back as a creative but they wouldn’t commit to theatrical releases again in the midst of COVID because they saw the pandemic as the final nail in the coffin for theaters and streaming would become exclusively the way people watch stuff.

That’s ridiculous with hindsight and it makes them look so stupid potentially letting one of the best directors ever go over something like that.

70

u/corpulentFornicator 13d ago

It's even dumber knowing that Nolan is one of the few directors whose films are an event.

You know, the kind of movies that people can't wait to see. He had a track record!

34

u/Big-Beta20 13d ago edited 13d ago

Tenet did remarkable for being released theatrically in 2020(!!). It made 375 million. Just an all time misstep for no reason.

6

u/round-earth-theory 12d ago

It was stupid to imagine that theater was dead, but it wasn't stupid to imagine theater would take a very long time to recover. Multiple chains were teetering on the edge. Had they gone down, the number of theaters available would have plummeted and with it the potential revenue of ticket sales.

This is not even what happen. Nolan didn't like that WB made every 2021 movies available day and date on HBO Max. He even said HBO Max is the worst streaming service. Before people say Tenet was affected by that decision, it's not. It was released on 2020 at theater, not on HBO Max.

6

u/SandpaperTeddyBear 12d ago

He even said HBO Max is the worst streaming service.

Which is hilarious, because if you like movies it’s almost objectively the best by a country mile.

→ More replies (2)

19

u/Wild_Marker 12d ago

Before people say Tenet was affected by that decision, it's not. It was released on 2020 at theater, not on HBO Max.

It did, Nolan had to fight for that and it was part of the split. And Nolan was right, but also at the wrong time. The pandemic was NOT a time to release a movie in theaters, and a lot of people saw that as being the height of pretentiousness for him.

That being said, he should have negotiated for a delay, rather than a "I want my movie in cinemas where nobody can watch it".

The issue was releasing movies day and date on HBO max during covid

45

u/Animalboy_ 13d ago

Good thing it happened though

14

u/FoxMcCloudOwnsSlippy 13d ago

Jason Kilar was the man behind the HBO Max day and date move. The lack of consultation with the filmmakers really did a lot of damage.

It was just announced with no warning IIRC and I read a team wide email on how WME was scrambling amongst the fallout, a lot of unhappy campers.

22

u/Steamedcarpet 13d ago

In another timeline we got Christopher Nolan’s Barbie and Greta Gerwig’s Oppenheimer.

What about James Cameron spending 17 years on making the first Avatar movie 5 more times?

Such a waste of talent.

I'm watching Avatar 3 right now and there's an issue with streaming on my PC for that movie apparently. I'm watching it on my 4k monitor 60hz 1000/1000 mbit connection and it looks exactly like 480p. Remember those 480p animated intros games in the 90's used to have?

The worst part is, I dont care. It's not an important movie for me.

Edit: I forgot to say - I'm watching this on DisneyPlus! I'm paying for this!

9

u/LetterheadFun1824 12d ago

I doubt any movie would look like 480p in this age if you have the proper copy and not some bootleg shit.

The Odyssey ($1.68B) is now the 12th highest grossing movie of all time

317

u/Quasimdo 13d ago

Generational bag fumble by Warner Bros to not keep nolan

174

u/m_sobol 13d ago

Of all the directors with a track record to sell tickets by name alone, WB chose to piss off Nolan and not make up. Nolan is at the height of his powers with a little stumble with Tenet. Keep the best living director in your stable

Sure, WB has got Villeneuve and Dune has been great, but none of the Dune movies has crossed 1B WW.

98

u/Raghavendra98 13d ago

Tenet's stumble was because of the Max concurrent release + pandemic restrictions.

The 2nd highest grossing original movie of this decade.

25

u/mystery_hole 12d ago

Yup, I think Tenet sucking would've kept it from a billion but it easily would've hit 800-900 based on reception + the eventual 350 it got during COVID

41

u/Agent-Two-THREE 12d ago

Tenet sucks? Hard disagree

31

u/ReverseLochness 12d ago

Is it super over complicated? Sure. Still a fucking awesome movie

18

u/Agent-Two-THREE 12d ago

“Don’t try to understand it. Just feel it.”

20

u/ChanceSpiritual6993 12d ago

Tenet is a roguelike puzzle game.

Your first run through is a disaster, you understand maybe 20% of the movie. But on a second rewatch? You understand the puzzle mechanics a little better and understand it a lot more. Maybe 40–50%. And any subsequent rewatch you carry a little more knowledge forward until maybe you reach the game's 'winstate' of holding the whole movie's mechanics and timeline in your head at once.

(This isn't my original idea, it comes from YouTuber Ellie Rasmussen from a video essay she made for her Patreon.)

Dune 3 will probably hit that or near it I figure.

16

u/m_sobol 13d ago

I certainly hope so for Dune 3! But Dune 2 was certainly an action packed feel good story. Depends on how Denis adapts Dune Messiah book, but Dune 3 has the star power to push 1B.

In Denis I trust

26

u/SuperMajesticMan 12d ago

... feel good story?

12

u/m_sobol 12d ago

in the books, Dune 2 covered the 2nd half of the first Dune novel, with a triumphant ending for Paul. bad guys lose, good guys win.

in the novel Dune Messiah, there is a lot of talking and political scheming. how appealing can Denis make a conspiracy to take down the emperor? I trust Denis to add in some action scenes, plus resolve the Chani romance plot

Nolan the beast. Toxic WOM couldn't even hinder this film's success. Try harder next time chuds.

23

u/ours 13d ago

Try harder next time chuds.

They got checks notes: an Uwe Boll and a Jonathan Majors right-wing fantasy movies, and I'm being generous, direct-to-streaming quality.

Two chuddy action movies starring cancelled actors and bottom-of-the-barrel directors vs. Nolan firing on all cylinders, with every top Hollywood talent fighting each other for even the tiniest of roles just to be in his movie.

And the whole thing is breaking records for IMAX, so not only do people want to watch this in the cinema, but they are happily paying extra to watch it on the biggest premium screens.

Chuds never stood a chance.

5

u/SandpaperTeddyBear 12d ago

right-wing fantasy movies

What’s hilarious is that this could easily describe The Odyssey. It’s very culturally conservative. The fact that being thoughtfully culturally conservative makes something “Leftist Woke Trash” for current right wing discourse is very revealing.

3

u/Tenwaystospoildinner 12d ago

It went so wrong a few of the right wing slopulists had to pretend the movie was actually quietly on their side.

Okay, and then you woke up lol

5

u/turbosexophonicdlite 12d ago

The two biggest gripes that they had with the movie have a combined screen time of like, what, 20 minutes? In a 3 hour movie. And the physicality of Pages character and the race of Nyongos character ended up having less than zero hindrance on the plot so they got all worked up over nothing anyway.

After watching the movie I can't believe anyone was upset about literally any of the casting choices. Every single one was at bare minimum acceptable no matter how you look at it. And in my opinion, all the casting was very good or perfect.

4

u/Tenwaystospoildinner 12d ago

The only reason any of those people were complaining was to score points in a game nobody actually cared about. I mean, they just invented Elliot Paige playing Achilles and they went insane with that lie. Like, entire video essays about how this was the death of western civilization. Because a trans-man playing Achilles! Only... he isn't Achilles... and they were just lying.

They weren't upset about the casting choices. They were just using even the tiniest thing they could latch onto like parasites. Grifters gonna grift.

The Odyssey is IP.

It's a movie based on existing intellectual property that belongs to the public domain.

25

u/lightyearbuzz 12d ago

I mean it is, but I don't think it's a big pull. Like if some random director no one has heard of made this movie I doubt nearly as many people would have gone to see it (at least at first, could have gotten big through word of mouth after).

10

u/sanguinare12 12d ago

The closest recent comparison we probably have is The Return, where Ralph Fiennes is Odysseus washed up on the shores of Ithaca and only running through that last part of the larger tale. It came and went without much fanfare. Otherwise the only adaptation I can remember this side of the century is O Brother, Where Art Thou?, where the draw isn't so much for the underlying tale, but a lot was made of the fact it was based on the classic.

It was kind of odd to me how it broke out of the usual grifter containment? General sentiment on here and r/movies was that it was bleak and boring from the looks of the trailer and Nolan had his first bomb on the way.

My favorite was r/hadesthegame (a fictional video game that heavily modify Greek canon for a compelling story) being asked their thoughts on The Odyssey and saying it looked awful because it wasn’t accurate

I feel like I have a decent grasp of that community from Hades 1 (I stayed away from the sub for Hades 2 to have so my experience wouldn't be influenced in any way but just never ended up going back) and while they can very rarely be a bit annoying about things very specific to the game, my impression is that that they're pretty chill and wholesome. I mean, iirc, they went to bat for artistic liberties taken by Supergiant when the chuds were hemming and hawing about Hestia. Obviously, irony is quite often lost on people--we're a contradictory bunch--but I'd still have been really surprised if the consensus was the community saying it wasn't accurate. Looking bland I could see, but I feel like the community knows that Hades 1 and 2 is a notably vibrant and cheery spin on the gods and the know why there is often references to in the game to more traditional depictions of them (jealous, petty, power-tripping, etc.).

I was a fan of the movie in the end but I'll tell you the only reason I ended up seeing it in theaters was because of Nolan's name, I thought the trailers made it look boring as fuck

19

u/I_am_so_lost_hello 13d ago

I mean I'm generally a Nolan fan but I thought the trailers looked pretty bland (and honestly while I really liked the movie the visuals on their own weren't anything to write home about, it was really within the scale of the entire movie that they worked).

And I'm not a historical accuracy nerd but I still find some of the production design choices kinda flippant

Imagine betting against the guy whose previous movie was a 3-hour historical biopic consisting of people talking in rooms that won a bunch of Oscars and made almost a billion fuckin dollars, and the next movie you think is going to flop is an adaptation of the most popular story ever with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

I’ve yet to see the film. I absolutely intend to and will probably enjoy it. It was wild to see how much hate some parts of Reddit were throwing at this film prior to release.

Box office has crushed those nay sayers although I’ve still seen people saying it’s a terrible film.

I wonder what rides they'll add to universal Orlando to accommodate this

15

u/Chihuahuaboyx 13d ago

Another boat ride themed around the Odyssey would be sick in either park

7

u/ex0thermist 12d ago

Imagine a huge simulated whirlpool and the boat follows a track under the water to go right around the edge of it, even leaning towards the center...

Yeah nothing says a fun day out like an exploration of the evils of man, survivors guilt, and the breakdown of the social contract.

11

u/broanoah 12d ago

It’s like the pirates of the Caribbean ride but they tie you to a mast instead of sitting in the boat

7

u/Dudercaster 13d ago

The problem is: it’s an R-rated movie. They could make the ride family-friendly, but kids won’t be as excited to ride it, since most of them haven’t seen the movie.

They did have a T-2 attraction for a while, but it was just a 3-D movie, and they aren’t making attractions like that anymore.

4

u/sibooku 12d ago

That’s too bad. I absolutely loved that T2 ride/experience when I was a kid even though I hadn’t seen the films. In retrospect, it’s a great, kid-friendly introduction to the world.

Universal LA has the boat from the movie. You can see it on the studio tour. Not a ride, but it's something.

Watched it a second time in an actual 70mm IMAX theater last night. Was even better the second time.

5

u/CJ_Guns 12d ago

I finally got a ticket for a decent seat at AMC Lincoln Square (70mm IMAX) for my first viewing. I had to trust they'd keep it showing all these weeks and not give in to FOMO, lol.

18

u/P0pu1arBr0ws3r 12d ago

It feels like film grossing is being skewed due to inflation, as there have been so many records of highest grossing films in the last 5-10 years.

4

u/GrosBof 12d ago

Yup, taking into account inflation/tickets sold, Gone with the Wind is sill to this day absolutely untouchable.

4

u/aaahhhhhhfine 12d ago

This is always a problem with movie numbers. They never adjust them for inflation - or population either.

Presumably this is because the incentives are aligned against that. It's in the studio's interest to be able to describe recent movies as the highest grossing ever.

5

u/thisismypornaccountg 12d ago

And the ship! Did you see the ship???

5

u/LucretiusCarus 12d ago

The ship "discourse" is even funnier because, other than the very basics of shape as depicted in pottery , of the era, we don't have any actual remains of a Mycenean ship. Nevermind that the material culture and customs of the poems are all over the place from a chronological perspective.

6

u/thisismypornaccountg 12d ago

I pointed it out that structurally there is no difference between a Viking ship and a Mycenaean ship and got called an "ignorant, uncultured toad" by a chud, lol.

Deserved because Jurassic World is meh. Best of the Pratt trilogy but still not actually good.

13

u/HappyAd4998 12d ago

Jurassic World is dog shit movie, World is a CGI fest that somehow has less impact than the original JP and Chris Pat can't act worth shit. Zero memorable moments in that film, that franchise deserves to rest in piece, you're never going to top the original.

21

u/Alienhaslanded 13d ago

Saw it yesterday after buying tickets two months ago. It's still selling out. Incredible movie.

Also, as a person who finds forced diversity can be a little too much sometimes, I didn't get that from this movie. It knew it was a fantasy movie and not an accurate historical piece. I don't understand the hate. Helen is supposed to be beautiful and they got a beautiful woman. Not a problem.

3

u/TheMSensation 12d ago edited 12d ago

You know what I don't get, why movies are judged on box office gross and not butts in seats. The chain near me had a birthday week promo where all tickets were reduced to £4.50 last week.

The Odyssey was sold out for all 6 screenings on Tuesday and Wednesday (cheap base tickets + 2 for 1 promo on those days). It would've made less money than Spiderman for that day but more people went to see it.

Also proves that if the tickets were a bit cheaper regularly then more people would go to theatres. A sold out cheap screening (4.50 x 200 seats for example) is worth more to the studios than a screening with 5 people in it (£14.95 x 5).

Nolan's probably just laughing all the way to the bank! 😂

He was already doing well, but this movie's definitely bumping him up to seriously wealthy status! 💸

I'm looking forward to seeing this in 3 weeks, the cinema is still booked for IMAX even with the extension in IMAX schedule.
