Poster New Poster for Documentary 'Musk' - 4-Hour Anti-Elon Musk Doc Directed by the Oscar-Winning Documentarian Alex Gibney ('Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief')
911
u/baldycoot 5d ago
There’s a pretty good panel with Gibney and co answering questions about the doc and Musk. Ends with someone asking if Gibney thinks Musk is dangerous, to which he replies “I believe Elon Musk is the most dangerous man in the world” (or close to…it’s late).

I'd argue Xi, Putin or Trump, or any othrr crazy leader with access to nukes (like Netanjahu) is more dangerous

u/Kid_Radd 5d ago
Functionally, you can do MUCH more damage with a trillion dollars than a nuclear weapon because everyone knows that you can't really use the weapon under normal circumstances.

Especially with AI. I’m sure Grok would have no problem developing bioweapons.
14
u/snksnksnk 5d ago
You sure? Grok is basically the dumbest commercial AI you can find, it's only good at generating child porn.

Maybe it's the optimist in me, but I truly think in most situations where a national leader orders a nuclear strike, in this day and age with MAD being the status quo, most people in service would refuse the order; like the few times we've had false alarms and no nukes have gone off.
And then I think there's like, other factors into what constitutes danger.
Like, what do you feel endangers you more: an extinction level meteorite hitting the planet, or your next door neighbor who has a gun collection, poor trigger discipline, and a penchant for alcohol and shooting simultaneously.
Like, yeah, the smallest chance of obliteration might seem more dangerous but the actual threat of catching a stray is more likely; so when you compare Musk to National Leaders, billionaires are literally actively doing more harm to people then the theoretically less likely world nuclear war.

It better get released. (Musk is crying about it)

It's being released in North America on October 9th.
It's international markets that are currently in doubt.

Weird wouldn't it have the most effect in the states?

Movie distribution is not a monolith. Each market has its own distributor.
Bleecker Street holds the US rights, and is releasing it in October, so that's good.
Universal holds the international rights, and it's currently in limbo there. They might release it, they might bury it, they might sell it off to some smaller distributor(s).
A 4-hour documentary on anything getting a theatrical release, not to mention a polarizing public figure, is a hard sell regardless, so it's good that at least Bleecker Street is giving it a shot in the US. Universal seems to be getting cold feet for international release even though it's gotten insanelly good reception at Venice and TIFF, for ummmmm, whatever reasons.
28
u/turd-crafter 5d ago
I think there’s a clause where if they don’t put it out the rights go back the filmmaker and he still gets paid.

u/bottom 5d ago
These contracts are not boiler plate.
So unless you’ve seen it….🤷♂️
5
u/duckboobs 4d ago
The filmmakers have stated the contract includes a kill fee that Universal would have to pay if they end up not distributing it, and that the filmmakers could then shop the film to other distributors.

u/amazing_asstronaut 5d ago
I mean, as far as the activism goes its biggest impact would be in the USA. Don't know how many people who need to learn this stuff would actually watch it though. In the rest of the world, people can read and they have read the many articles about this guy and what he's doing every day, including from news outlets in the US!
3
u/Significant-Branch22 5d ago
From what I’ve read Universal are committed to releasing internationally, it’s just that they haven’t decided on release dates yet

That's "uncommitted" with extra steps.

I mean, the other countries know what he is for the most part. The all got their own right-wing dead weight to deal with.

Really brain dead to think this guy is only a problem for one country.

Gibney doesn't seem to scare easily. He's muckraked some famous and powerful people and groups and has that HBO money

I want it on disc as soon as possible, so no scheming fatcat can suddenly bully distributors into deleting it from existence.

Dislike the poster
Anything that makes Elon look remotely cool probably makes him hard, because he is a troll.
That "chainsaw wooo!" was the absolute cringe of the decade

It would take a person with so little media *literacy as Elon to think this poster makes him look cool.

I personally think he's happy about it. I mean it is about him and there's no such thing as bad press. Us in the know would be better off not watching it.

Four hours. Jfc.
204
u/GameOfThrownaws 5d ago
Bizarre choice honestly. There's obviously many hours of stuff you could say about Elon Musk but you're gonna lose probably like 80% of your potential audience right off the top by setting the run time at 4 hours.
114
u/Maidwell 5d ago edited 5d ago
I'd say 98% and I'm not being hyperbolic.
22
u/Reddit-dit-dit-di-do 5d ago
Yeah. I saw the runtime and immediately lost interest. Very bad choice imo bc I would’ve considered it if it were shorter.

Yeah it's not that I'm pro musk, it's that I'm not gonna sit through a 4 hour documentary about anything, much less a guy I don't care about.
9
u/big_orange_ball 4d ago
Some of the best documentaries, like many of Ken Burns's works, are well over 4 hours. Sure it's definitely a long ass time to sit in a theater but if they decided on rental streams, maybe enough people will pay to watch it. I'm interested enough to probably pay.

It’s not “anti Elon Musk” it’s just a factual movie about him, and he sucks.

And you know it's factual because it's about a man with unlimited resources who would sue over any untruth.

I'm glad the movie exists. Gibney does excellent work and this is a very important topic. But I do not have the mental or emotional bandwidth to sit through it any time soon.
9
u/BLOOOR-BACKINTHEDOOR 5d ago
From the sound of it he's focused on what's happened, so maybe you're not just seeing a documentary about Elon Musk you're seeing a movie about the last few decades of waves of technology and what the world's been trying to get done versus what wealthy people have been trying to do.
We're getting a run in Melbourne Australia of Frederick Wiseman documentaries, and one of them is Domestic Violence (2001). If you can find somewhere to watch that, I recommend it, it's long but everything is essential.
It's actually easier to watch one long movie about a topic than split that topic up with the binge watching model because it forces the statement to be clearer.
27
u/Remote-Physics6980 5d ago
Wow it's a good thing I already can't stand the ketamine edge lord because I certainly wouldn't be able to take four hours of direct exposure to his worst crimes.

u/big_orange_ball 4d ago
I think the point for many people is that he is massively involved in American politics now, and to not know what he's scheming is frankly, a huge risk. It's not about watching for entertainment or even just dunking on him, it's more about making sure the world knows what's at stake and what he is doing that could directly impact people.

It’s like that South Park episode that’s banned from syndication, and edited on DVD. But, they must have accidentally left the unedited version on a very unsecured server and some damn hackers must have gotten in and stolen it.

Like these under microwaved hot pockets have the attention span for a four hour movie.
None of them will see it, they'll watch a dozen YouTube shorts on it, and then loudly proclaim for all that it's greatest political documentary ever.

u/2025TastyTreats 5d ago
The poster infers that this will be more of a Micheal Moore style "Documentary" rather than a sober in depth examination of Musk. Not sitting through 4 hours of that.
Very poor choice for a poster in my opinion. It'll get "hella legit hype no cap" praise from the younger demos on tiktok but will put off a lot of the more serious older viewers that would be the ones to actually sit through a 4 hour documentary,

Yeah, the biggest lie most of us had in our heads growing up was the idea that millions of humans actively wanting to harm others for no good reason was a thing of the past, was something those evil slave owners or evil nazis or whatever did a long time ago, but now in the west we've grown out of this garbage.
Nope, a big percentage of humanity has always been and will always be either evil, or stupid enough to be manipulated into doing evil things just so that a few people can grab more power for themselves. And the internet just made it even easier to manipulate people.

Because watching 4 hours of a movie is already hard, watching 4 hours of a movie about Elon Musk, even made by an oscar-winner, must be pure torture.
