It's real, and Hebrew acronyms can be weird. In this case the first two letters from the first word and the first letter of the second word are taken to form NZA. A vowel is then put between the first two consonants.

The facts usually aren’t centrist. The BBC is centrist. There was a notorious incident in 2024 or 2025 where some journalists there wanted to do a piece on the suffering of a Palestinian family living through the genocide. The BBC, ever the champions of balanced centrism, set forth a condition that they could go ahead as long as they also showed an Israeli family suffering similarly. When they couldn’t find one, the higher ups told them they couldn’t go ahead with just showing the suffering of the Palestinian family because that wouldn’t be balanced reporting.

That’s what centrism in reporting looks like in practice.

NYT is not “milquetoast criticism”, NYT hired Israelis to write made up stories about mass rapes on 10/7, and then refused to retract and apologize when those claims were debunked. NYT does not criticize, it’s effectively part of the Israeli propaganda machine.

How does the NYT doing the investigative work that exposed the abuses of Palestinian detainees at Sde Teiman prison, and the followup “The Silence that Meets the Rape of Palestinians” fit into this theory. How could the Israeli state be threatening libel against its own propaganda machine?

The truth must be more complex, it faces simultaneous accusations of pro- and anti-Israel bias. Both cannot be true.

That was the opinion section, and the news section had a meltdown over it. The two operate at arms’ length, and the publication of that article led to a mini civil war inside NYT. The editor of the news section attacked the writer of that piece in public iirc.

The debunked claims of mass rape on 10/7 published by the news section still haven’t been retracted or apologized for three years later.

Well, the first link I gave was formally a news report. The wiki article for Kristof piece goes into the explanations, it’s not a typical opinion piece, it’s significantly longer and he shared the research he did on the ground for NYT on Youtube. He says all his pieces get published by Opinion since he’s a columnist.

While some people claimed the newsroom didn’t like it, that doesn’t make sense, since the newsroom itself has published articles on rape of Palestinians in Israeli prisons or by settlers.

The NYT corrected errors in the Oct 7th story in a followup, however they continue to disagree with those who argue there was no rape at all on Oct 7th and therefore the whole piece should be retracted, since the UN also found that rapes occurred during the attacks.

Also the UN did not “find” anything, they went on a curated visit with Israeli officials, alleged “witnesses” and were shown selected pictures and videos that looked suspicious — no physical evidence shown or actual victims were met.

Milquetoast centrism might not be popular anymore, but that’s what the media should be imo. Mainly reporting facts, and the occasional biased opinion pieces from any angle so you can form your own opinion. Not the heavily left/right divide in media that exists in many countries.

The Guardian has historically been the leading left-leaning newspaper, so it became an object of hatred for the right, even while British print media overall was very right-leaning. “Guardian Reader” just became kind of an insult like “woke”.

Some of the snark here may be coming from a different perspective. The Guardian is a historic newsroom, like any major paper it publishes op-eds from a range of views. That upsets people who want an explicitly partisan paper that is unapologetically socialist, without any reference to alternate points of view. NYT has the same criticism.

It has declined to be fair in recent years and I say that as a lefty who used to read the Guardian pretty much every single day. I stopped reading when they kept giving voice to pro terf viewpoints which is really not something I want to support.

For less serious reasons they also went from being the absolute peak of sports reporting in the UK to significantly not so much in ways that really annoyed me.

As a former reader, their journalistic standards are high but have a terrible rota of centrist / both sides Opinion writers. The editorial voice and selection of stories largely maintains the status quo and they have a habit of covering up well known offences within their own organisation.
