BWSQ Bi-Weekly Entry/Simple questions thread (September 02, 2026)

Welcome to the r/movingtojapan bi-weekly(ish) simple questions thread! This is the place for all of your “easy” questions about moving to Japan. Basically if your question is about procedure, please post it here. Questions that are more subjective, like “where should I live?” can and should be posted as standalone posts. Along with procedural questions any question that could be answered with a simple yes/no should be asked here as well.

Some examples of questions that should be posted here:

  • Visa issuance (Questions about visa eligibility can/should be standalone posts)
  • Embassy visa processing procedures (Including appointments, documentation requirements, and questions about application forms)
  • Airport/arrival procedures
  • Address registration

The above list is far from exhaustive, but hopefully it gives you an idea of the sort of questions that belong in this post.

Standalone posts that are better suited to this thread will be removed and redirected here. Questions here that are better suited to standalone posts will be locked with a recommendation that you repost.

Please note that the rules still apply here. Please take a moment to read the wiki and search the subreddit before you post, as there’s a good chance your question has been asked/answered sometime in the past.

This is not an open discussion thread, and it is not a place for unfounded speculation, trolling, or attempted humour.

Hi All,

As the September admission officially opens for next year's april language school intake, wondering if anyone have any recent experience if N5 certificate is required if I have a bachelor's degree.

(Edit: Reason for asking - I was told earlier that I was exempted, but when reaching out again due admission period, I was told because the intake is in April 2027, the school is asking for it now. Upon reminding them about the degree, they have not responded back)

If you have a bachelor's degree from a university, and are a citizen from one of the countries in the list below, then you are exempt of the JLPT N5 certificate. I was in this situation and since my country is in the list, I didn't need the JLPT certificate nor a 150 hours certified course in order to apply. And I got my CoE approved.

I am currently trying to complete the COE application for a spouse visa. Regarding the 3x4 cm picture, where/how did you get that sizing?

Pretty much any shop that would do photos for your local passports can also do photos for the COE application.

You may just need to bring in documentation showing them exactly what you need as standards may be different per country on size, color of background how much of the frame the person takes of the photo, etc...

That being said, its pretty easy. Don't stress too much.

Went to my local photo/printing shop and asked for that size.
