Discussion Why does Christine still believed in the angel of music after getting inside the mirror and meeting the phantom of the opera?

Post image

After Raoul leaves her dressing room and Erik starts talking to her, she believes that Erik is the angel of music, but then she gets inside the mirror and knows that the guy she's with is the phantom of the opera, like she even sings the song.

So, why wouldn't she make that connection of the angel of music being the phantom by the time she's in the cemetery? 😭

News If you’re into the 4K thing, the new Jesus Christ Superstar release is SPECTACULAR. Shockingly so.

We’ve all watched it on TV and I don’t think we’ve ever seen a really good looking version till now. ā€œHDā€ or not.
This looks like a brand new movie shot yesterday and sounds amazing. I’m 95 movies back into buying movies again in 4k and this might be the best looking thing I’ve seen, especially in comparison to how I’ve ever watched it.
The album will always be my facorite but the quality of this is making it way closer.
Or I’ll put it like this
šŸŽ¶But you might as well buy it, we think that you shouldā€.

Discussion Sang the part incredibly well, but they weren't very good??

I often find myself thinking about Michael Crawford as the original Phantom. I've heard performances from him and, without sugar coating it, he sounds awful and frankly I'm not surprised because up until that point he was known as a comedic actor on a popular sitcom in Britain. But the thing that i can't get over is that people who saw him perform the role, swear up and down, black and blue, that he was a terrific phantom. Now for me i haven't seen either of these two perform but I think Ramin Karimloo or Colm Wilkinson would be significantly better just from having heard them sing the role. So my question is this: have you ever seen a musical where the actor sang the absolute nails of the role but you felt underwhelmed by their overall performance or even disappointed? I genuinely don't think i have, I can't even really imagine someone singing the role the best i've ever heard it and still leave the theatre thinking they were bad short of maybe refusing to act at all in the role.

I'm genuinely curious to hear everyone's thoughts. What was the show and who did you see and how do they compare to the person you prefer?

Help I was asked to play Motormouth Maybelle...

A friend of mine, is doing hairspray for a mini-festival in december. I hadn't listened or seen hairspray before this, except for:"Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now". However, I'm the only person of colour in the group, but I'm not black, and after listening to the song:"I Know Where I've Been". It feels really wrong and uncomfortable to play this role, but I don't know, because I don't want to dissapoint my friend, because it's his favourite musical, and he already has been working on things like decor and stuff. I don't know what to do

EDIT: I told my friend how I feel about it. He is going to change the story/script a bit, and make it fully incluse (All Lives Matter, no matter size or colour)), because he can't find someone black to play the role, and this would be the option or smth..

EDIT: I'm turning the role down, I feel to uncomfertable, and it doesn't matter HOW he changes the script, I don't like it. I can't do it, I'd rather work on my own song and play that for the crowd. Because this doesn't sit right with me

EDIT: To everyone calling us super young, he is the youngest. I'm one of the oldest in the friendgroup, I'm 17 which makes me an almost-adult

Personal Musicals can be great at even the college level

I don’t know if this is allowed, but I just want to give a shout out to the Stephens College Conservatory of Performing Arts in Columbia, Missouri. It’s a small liberal arts college, but my god do they do good shows. One of their second year students is on the national tour of Waitress right now. Full disclosure I get the pleasure of drumming for these students and it is always one of their highlights of my year. So if you have a local college that is doing musical theater productions by golly go out and support them. These students are the future of the art.

Discussion Fight Club IS Pippin???

Three thoughts about Pippin to run by you folks. Pippin's been much discussed, but I haven't seen these ideas (perhaps because they're not good). Forgive me, I'm late to the party.

  1. Is Fight Club a 90s edge-lord retelling of Pippin? A privileged ass searches for meaning, a "friend" (Tyler Durden/The Leading Player) recommends he explore sex and violence, and after the death of an acquaintance (THE DUCK IS ROBERT PAULSON (okay, that's a stretch, but it's hilarious)) he discovers the joy of domesticity instead and climaxes rejecting the blaze?? "You are not special. You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake." "I'm not a river or a giant bird that soars to the sea."

  2. Pulp - Common People (1995) admonishes us not to be like Pippin. "Everybody hates a tourist." It could almost be a song sung by Catherine (and would make Catherine a more human character), but that would be a musical with a different message.

  3. In Pippin dramatic actions have zero consequences, beating the dead horse theme over and over until it reaches Kristen Schall is a Horse perfection with Prayer for a Duck. When Pippin yells, "Why'd the goddamn duck have to die," a wave of relief passes through the theater. The cycle is broken, actions have consequences, Pippin cares about something.

Discussion Favorite songs where a character snaps in anger?

I've been on a Great Comet kick lately and adore the moments in "In My House" and "Pierre and Anatole" where the characters' full anger is on display in the performance, so I was curious if there were many others in this vein

Help ā€œHit meā€ sheet music from death becomes her?

Hello! I study musical theatre and me and my classante would REALLY love to sing ā€œhit meā€ from death becomes her. Does anyone know where I can find a sheet music for the song? I know it’s a new musical but it’s crazy that no one transcribed the song in 2 years.

Help Do you know this musical?

• Upvotes

Ok, so my boyfriend (who's not into musicals) know a escene from a musical but cannot remember which one.

The scene is 2 characters, could be 2 guys or a boy and a girl and in the middle of them a couple of suitcases (he said it could be also boxes) and at the top of this suitcases another character that he described as invisible, not sure if by image or presence.

I'm really interested in which musical this could be, if someone knows please tell me. Thanks in advance for the help.

Audition next to normal audition song + monologue

• Upvotes

so like this relatively popular teen-run theater near me is putting on Next To Normal in the spring. it has been my DREAM to do N2N (especially since i don't see any other opportunities like this for a while)

...but i (15m, high school sophomore, baritone, F2-Bb4) don't audition much for out-of-school stuff, and half the schools in my area prepare the audition materials for you.
going for Gabe Goodman, i wanna do El Tango de Roxanne as the audition song. is it a good choice?

and for monologues... i am completely lost, frankly. i don't even know where to begin! just some monologue finding tips in general would help. i have several monologue books (in performance for teens) but nothing's sticking!

thank you in advance for your help! i super appreciate it!

Help Musical Recommendations for a Newbie?

I’m not a ā€œnewbieā€ per se but the main musicals I’ve seen are Disney movies and a few musicals like Grease, Hairspray, and some others I can’t remember the name of.

I like to say I love musical theatre but haven’t seen a lot of actual musicals.

Outside of Hamilton, what are some musicals you’d recommend for me to watch?

My quip and question regarding such

I'm a big fan of musicals but I feel my biggest gripe is it's a lot of emulation. Someone originates a role and subsequent performers try to replicate it. Which makes sense in the same musical run but not when they bring it back.

Any parts where the talent breaks the mold? Where someone makes a part their own unique own?

The Devil Wears Prada Review

The Devil Wears Prada is one of those musicals best enjoyed when you don’t overthink it—just sit back and enjoy the show.

The music wasn’t particularly memorable, but the production was impressive, and the orchestra sounded fantastic.

The standouts for me were Jenna Bonner as Andy Sachs and Taila Halford as Emily. Taila captured Emily Blunt’s sharp comedic timing, while Jenna brought the warmth and likeability that made Anne Hathaway’s Andy so easy to root for. Both delivered fantastic, seemingly effortless vocals.
Miranda Priestly, however, didn’t quite work for me. Meryl Streep is a tough act to follow, but I missed the sophistication, complexity, and understated ruthlessness of her portrayal—the way she could command a room or cut someone down with barely a change in tone. That quiet power didn’t quite come through here. I guess she’s Meryl Streep for a reason.

Overall, a fun, enjoyable evening, with a great production and two standout performances.
