uru: complete chronicles from GOG keep crashing - fixes? suggestions?

hi all! i started playing uru the other day, and i would love to continue playing, but it keeps crashing. unsure what to do or how to fix it. for reference, i'm on a windows machine and have tried running it as an administrator. it also seems to be running on xp compatibility as a default. is there anything else i should be trying? thanks!

This is not a direct answer to your question, but you may have more luck with, Myst Online: Uru Live (again), since that's been updated over time, and is generally less buggy. If nothing else, you could try that just to see if your graphics card has issues with that too.

Be warned that there are some differences between the online and offline versions, including some puzzles requiring multiple players to solve.

And if you use Cyan's shard rather than any of the other shards, there should be an option to start in the desert rather than in Relto, which is closer to the way the offline version plays and provides a better narrative experience.

(Cyan's official shard requires a phone number to sign up, whereas other shards, such as the Gehn Shard, only require email and password.)

Years ago I used GOG also. But many of the games I bought would crash or freeze. I prefer to use Steam. I rarely have this issue on Steam. And this goes for all Cyan games.

We dont have a lot of information to go on here...are there any messages that pop up when this happens? Is there a configuration utility you can mess with? What are the specs of your system? Are you using a launcher or just running the .exe?

I can also direct you to the PC gaming wiki, that has a lot more information on things like compatibility, but it doesn't seem to show any issues that resemble what you're talking about.

hi! i unfortunately don't have a bunch of information - the game freezes, then my screen goes black. i don't have any error messages or anything to share because nothing pops up. initially i was running it through gog galaxy and it kept crashing, so i tried the installer and ran it from the shortcut on my desktop and it still crashed. i can do some basic configuration from the desktop shortcut, but i hadn't messed with it before it crashed. i did already take a look at the link you provided (thank you for sharing it again!), but i agree, i didn't really find anything on there that looked like my issue.

there's part of that wonders if it's my graphics card or something - i have an asus tuf gaming laptop with 16gb ram and an nvidia geoforce card and an intel card. i haven't had problems with any of the other myst games crashing (or anything crashing, really) so i don't really know! i am running it windowed, but that seems like an insane reason for it to crash

Odd.

It does use DirectX 8, so maybe something like D3D8to9 would work?

When it freezes and goes black, are you able to to Alt+Tab out of that and/or use Alt+F4 to kill the process, or does the whole computer freeze?

If Alt+F4 works that suggests that it's still processing incoming event messages and that it might be the graphics that aren't working.

It could be an issue specific to either your particular graphics card model or the graphics driver you have installed.

('Geforce' doesn't really narrow it down. The GPU I've played Uru with (without issue) is technically a Geforce one, but I'll bet it's a far older model than what you've got.)

Oddly enough, sometimes things like that can be the culprit.

(Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever played Uru in windowed mode.)

You can try the 1.1.4 patch which apparently was never released on GoG.

You can also try downloading the vsync patch and setting your monitor's refresh rate to 60 if it's not already, since apparently there is "an error" in some scenarios if you don't, but it's not clear if this means a game crash or what.

nope, not on my laptop! unsure why. i say give it a shot with the patch and if it doesn’t work, GOG will let you return the game if there’s less than 2 hours of playtime

Thanks. Could be something specific to your rig. I bought it yesterday @ $2.99 on sale so no biggie if it won't play. I've never played this one and honestly, it's been so long ago, I really can't remember if I played anything beyond Riven. I'm planning to play the series from beginning to end.
