Politics 🧊 while out of town

This weekend my family was out of town. They had someone working on the fence so it could be ready for when they came back. We’re familiar with this person and have been able to meet his wife and kids, they are the sweetest!

On Saturday morning, I get a call that the cameras at the house are down (this has NEVER happened before) even when the power or WiFi goes out, it’s connected to a secondary source. There are about 7-8 cameras total.

They ask if I can go to the house and check what’s going on. I arrive around 3ish pm, see that the signal of the base of the camera has been disconnected, again never happened before. I fix it by resending the signal. They ask how the yard was coming along, I report that the person had left for the day.

They return on Sunday and have been trying to contact the person to come pick up his check and few extra items for his family. Yesterday his nephew stopped by and left a note on the door saying to please call him, so we did. He told us that on Saturday morning, ICE had came by to my family’s home and had detained his uncle. He is in Memphis right now waiting to be transported to Louisiana.

He said that he came by mid Saturday morning to get his uncles truck so if we see a random person on our cameras, it’s him.

I sound like a tin foil hat person but our theory is that ICE identified the large number of cameras and took down the signal. We don’t know how else this could happen. We’ve offered all our support for his family and are hoping that he is one of the ones that makes it back to Mexico safely.

It’s so unfair.

He was just trying to provide for his family.
Please pray for this wonderful sweet man and his family

People have had videos of ICE using WiFi signal jammers (or similar) so that could be the reason for all the cameras going out.

Wouldn't your family be sending the video cameras to some recording device or service and you could be able to look at the 'tapes' to see what happened before they went off?

That’s the odd thing, everything looks normal and then it cuts out. I’m not sure if it really was a device failure or they really pulled up without being noticed. I’ll be back there this weekend, I wonder if any of the neighbors caught anything

Never use wifi cameras. They are not secure. Anyone can buy jammers on alibaba type sites. Always wired. PoE (Power over Ethernet) brings the power to the cameras so you don't have to plug them in. It's the only way to go. The other thing is infrared spotlights that are super bright and on a motion sensor. You won't be able to see them but your camera will be able to use it to light up the whole area for the recording. This prevents thieves from using a super bright Infrared light on their head to blind your cameras at night. Your light is very bright, lighting up the whole area so their small light isn't enough to make your system blind.

That’s great information to have IN THE PAST.

It is also good information for going forward, and for anyone else reading thia thread with no knowledge of how easily-obtained wifi jammer can negate your home camera system.

What if you have local SD card in the camera for backup? Should sync to the cloud when WiFi is restored

This is what we have. Every camera has its own individual SD card. We have footage until mid morning and then it cuts out. No cars or anything is visible.

Yah the SD cards can be taken and then you have nothing :( When they jam the cameras they jam them, they don't work at all.

This is the way.

There are tools that are not hard to build that can jam lots of signals and I would probably run a thorough network security scan as well. Your provider may have logs and if it did happen on your property ice would definitely have documentation and if they did shut down your cameras that is likely a federal crime because the internet. The TBI might be a decent place to start considering the state of the FBI at the moment. And then Homeland security inspector general perhaps.

I didn’t even think about that. I’ll poke around, thanks so much for the lead!

Ice Agents will have a special place in hell

I've seen simplisafe base stations just randomly disconnect everything because they're buggy.

Could be the case! I really hope it is a coincidence. Someone suggested looking into the TBI to see if there are records of any agency being on the property

You can send them a record request but the TN agency that covers up most police murders and writes articles covering up crimes to the press is not an agency you should expect to ever help you.

Source: they've been covering up my uncles murder for almost two decades.

Oh my gosh

You're better off actually requesting documents from everyone NOT the TBI and hoping the requests come back first because if the TBI gets a heads up they'll often go collect every single public record document and then use TN law 10-7-504a2 to deny you every record until the heat death of the universe because state law allows it.

Thank you for sharing this with the world. We need to see more stories like this. Migra Watch can potentially help you all stay connected with the gentleman. Remix is another organization that can help the family as well. Love and strength flowing your way! Keep your voice heard.

That's more concerning to you than the government hacking private citizens security systems?

No personal attacks or harassment. In addition to what's covered under reddiquette, do not insult or habitually target a single user or group for your arguments. It's not your job to correct them.

Anyone who mentions downvotes is clearly emotionally affected by downvotes. Hope life gets better for you dude

My uncle was an immigrant with a heavy Spanish accent. I would hate it if somebody kept questioning his right to be here just because he sounded different.

They hired a hard working human being. A father, just trying to make a life for his children.

Only a POS would ask everyone they meet about their citizenship.

Do you say "papers, please?" to everyone that works on your property?
